  • Running presence at 4 o'clock and treble at 2 o'clock!! That's ridiculous, way too bright and harsh sounding!

  • mesa all the way

  • ENGL Thunder Vs Single Rectifier? 100W it's too much for me.

  • definition not as good on amp#2

  • Mesa is like the mexican model of ENGLE...........get it?

  • ENGLE owns mesa!

  • It's pretty obvious that you could make either amp sound like the other with a little tweaking of the knobs.

  • that mesa just spews gain

  • "amp 2" ,obviously the mesa, sounded way too undefined for me

  • Amp 1 was better. More vocal mid-range and more balls.

  • amp 1 is definitely an ENGL, and of course it's better. it cuts a lot better in a real mix, and the bottom isn't breaking apart. it remains a lot tighter in those palm mutes. it's a giveaway that the 2nd amp is the Mesa.

  • Wish more spokespersons were as direct and to the point as this smart cookie.

  • Both sound terrible, trebly and incredibly harsh.

  • What cabinet are you using? Both amps sound like garbage.

  • Throw some EL-34s in the Mesa and use the tube rectifier instead of the silicon diode, and then decide. I'm assuming this guy is using 6L6 tubes since he went with silicon diode. Anyway, both amps rule!

  • like the sound of the 1 but its little fizzy makes that annoying sound hshshssssshhss

  • mesa sounds better but in this clip it doesnt justice at all because it has way too much gain on the mesa wich isnt good with that head

  • I guessed correctly... The Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier always sounds a little bit mire fuzzy. If I had to choose between those two I would have to flip a quarter. They're both kick ass sounding amps

  • Amp 1 has a more practical sound. More clarity, and more importantly, more mids. Amp 2 just wouldn't sit well in a live mix, and it was muddy as hell.

  • i actually think amp 1 sounds better.

  • amp 2... i hope its t\he rect

  • in this vid the ENGL sounds better nuff said

  • the gain is WAY too much on the mesa

  • Green is much better

  • is amp1 the fireball?

  • i recognized amp 2 almost straight away.. that messy saturation is so mesa ^^

Well, i play on Engl, and the other guitarist in my band plays Recto, so it was easy to tell.

  • dude... a dual rectifier vs a fireball? you crazy??? fire it up against a powerball! than you compariss 2 GOOD amps! the fireball distortion is crap!

  • @METALMICHEW Fireball and Powerball sound pretty much the same distortion wise. I´ve been using them for years now. Difference is in amount of channels. And that the old Fireball didnt have noisegate and was 60W.. Which i prefer anyway, cos you get that beauty cranked up sound at lower volume. The Fireball distortion is not crap, its awesome, as well as Powerballs!

Btw in this shoot out ENGL sounds crunchier and with better clarity.

  • amp #2 had to much treble amp #1 had a clearer tone you could really hear each note from another were as #2 was a little muddy for my taste

  • how many freakin amps do you have in that room dude?!?!

  • Amp 1 beat the shit out of amp 2.

  • #1 was cleaner and sustained more than #2, but had a little less attack, but #2 lacked some depth. I'd go with #1, can always add a solo boost.

  • i like first, more tight ( i think mesa))))

  • I preferred the "balls" of amp 2

  • I don't know why people gust don't dial in the best tone they can get from each amp. Your ear is gonna look for a similar tone anyways. Everyone has a signature sound. Why make these amps sound like garbage. Do a comparison based on tones you like from these amps.

  • Amp 1 has a cleaner tone, more crushing.

  • he has the presence and bass dialed way too high on the recto. as an avid boogie fan ill admit that the rectifier sounds like crap in this vid, but it wouldve helped to have EQ'd it correctly. all the fizzy highs and farty lows would go away with the bass at ~9-10 oclock and presence at ~11-1 oclock.

  • amp 1, a bit cleaner a nice crispy thick tone, but can for sure dirty up

  • both these amps sound sick

  • Amp 1 hands down is the best, amp 2, while not horrible sounding, sounds dull and less defined.. I've had the pleasure of also playing both brands and I have to say Engl slays Mesa

  • i like amp 1 but probably only because it is sounds lower gain with the given settings. my opinion might change if they were dialed to obtain similar gain sounds.

  • oh come on..engl will always will!

  • i lyk amp 1 ...

  • wow not gonna lie engl sounds better than the mesa but you do need to tweak your boogie but for the preset distortion engl takes the cake. ive also heard that extended range guitars sound much better on engl i guess its just made to give a tighter low which is what i look for with my 7 and 8 maybe i can splurge and get one

  • way too much treble...

  • Liked no.1 better.. better clarity not as dull and dark and chords sound more alive.. lets see which one was no 1!

  • 2 mesa 1 engl?

  • @asashesrain you got it , I could tell a mile away when he played children of the grave in the chugging section because Tony Iommi uses one in his rig lately

  • imagine the tone king shopping for new tubes for all the amps... worth it ss amps are for line 6ers with a totally scooped sound and spidermoney in there wallet. just my opinion;)

  • I'm like 6 minutes into the video and I can honestly say that Amp 2 is superior imo. It's a fuller sound and sounds less "buzzy" and more wholesome. Idk I don't really like amp 1 all too much.

  • ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok xD

  • honestly the engl sounds better but i think if u adjusted them right mesa would sound a bit better but idk

  • great sounds! what cab are you using kind sir?

  • Mate, is your room in a closet? No offense, but the room seems rather small. Mabe just all the awesome gear.

  • 1- ENGL

    2- Mesa

    pretty sure of it

  • amp 2 is smoother.amp 1 is too trebly

  • Some of you guys in the comments need your ears checked. How can you not recognize the iconic sound of a Mesa Dual Rec in amp 2?

In my old band I had the Engl Fireball, and the other guitarist had the Mesa Dual Rec. The Engl was always tighter - they actually complimented each other well.

  • ENGL is better

  • what guitar, need now, must buy!

  • DONT READ THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE WATCHED THE VIDEO

    RED = ENGL

    GREEN = MESA

everyone like this so you can save the BS of going to the link. :/

  • you cant really compare these amps as they are in the difference money league the fireball is 1200 euros and mesa is 2200 so yeah...

  • @hurmos Depends where you live, in N-america the Engl is imported while the Mesa is local. Prices are much closer.

  • @iplayloud2

    In Europe:

    - ENGL Fireball: 1190

    - Dual Rectifier: 2200

  • Tone King, I enjoy all your videos, anyone who has negative comments, well they are just lame. I have a Mesa Dual Recti Roadster, and I love it, I cant get enough of it......in this video, with your choice of channel, mode and settings, I actually think the Engl sounds better, but I would have to compare them in person to come up with a final decision on which sounds better. Also I like your choice of guitar, I myself also have a DK2M

  • what is the dual rectifier?

  • HEY Tone King with his DEVIL Horns...thanks for the review. Whilst the Mesa is more versatile and with more voicing options, the trusty ENGL definitely holds its own and I would be more inclined to buy it...stay METAL with a tweed jacket...:-)

  • The Mesa's are fuckin' monsters esp. the 2 channel ones! just needs the 808 in front, then its a freakin' beast!

  • Amp 1 is he ENGL and Amp 2 is the Mesa

  • I like 2

  • I liked amp 1 the best, and i would guess that was the ENGL

  • i like the Mesa used by more famous bands aka metallica rammstein so much gain and has a really clear tight sound

  • green - amp 2, have less noise, sounds more clear

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • i like amp 1 a little bit beter because it has less of a scooped sound.

  • "...we have limited amount of time we can do this..." Then CUT THE CHATTER TO A MINIMUM.

  • Settings were not common or ideal for either amp.

  • trebe is too high, you should put a microphone in front of the cabinet's cone, not in front of your mouth

  • OK? )))

  • i have to say amp 1 sounded better but i guess it's inevitable for the price XD

  • Amp 1, less grainy fuzzy stuff. A clearer sound. But if it were me I'd turn the treble down on both of them!

  • I totally thought that the ENGL was the green but it wasn't.

    ENGL = Red

    Mesa = Green

  • Looked up the answer, looks like I'd rather have the Mesa. If only I had $2700 for the Road King xD

  • good stuff. get both of them

  • mesas are fucking overpriced

  • I think that this comparison would be much better if you turn down the presence.

  • amp 2 sounds better, more balls.

  • @westsd4lyphe if by more balls you mean more fuzz and hiss than yes

  • @westsd4lyphe For me:

    - Amp 1 has better distortion, Amp 2 distortion sounds like a broken speaker.

    - Amp 2 has more bass but Amp1 mids are better.

Amp 1 is the clear winner.

  • @Lgw1984 That's opinion, not fact

  • amp one sounded better to my ear's but it had a little noise coming through though but maybe a noise reducer might help with that and some tweaking!

  • amp one is brighter and has a tighter feel were as tamp 2 is darker and feels like it has a tad bit more grit i like them both but if i had to pick one i would pick amp 1 and i think its the mesa/boogie

  • engl is for mids dude, so crank em, treble is way too high

  • @hideki12345 dude.....if u look at the amp...he has the mid boost on......

  • @rawrawr6666

    so?

  • I'ts a matter of taste really.. If you want to sound like a chainsaw - go for the Engl, if you want feeling in your tone - go for the Mesa! Living proof :)

  • 2 was the dual recto

  • All i have to say is they both sound GREAT!! i did not check which was which but 1 seemed a bit tighter 2 had a more bottom beef and a little more headroom. I will stick with my KranK, and if i had the cash-CAMERON!!!! Best amp out there now! so hard to get though. Its a custom order ,unless i am blind, and that sucks--being that NO 2 amps sound the same-make,model,watts -etc.before buying i have spent 8 hrs in GC-SA-Robbies-Manny's tweaking and checkin 2 or 3 JCM 800's back in my Marshall days.

  • ENGL won.

  • Amp 2 sounds better, kinda' sure it's the Boogie :)

  • I think #2 is the mesa. I like it better SLIGHTLY. It has a little more bass. Now let me go on the site......

  • Amp 1 had much sweeter high end/treble. Amp 2 was cleaner and tighter sounding on the leads which makes me think thats the silicon diode in the Mesa. All in all I though amp 1 sounded more organic and natural. Regardless both amps were GOOD. Awesome video by the way, this really helped me decide which one to purchase.

  • AMP # 1, That ENGL is a BEAST!!!! \m/(~_~)\m/

  • i agree amp one is the shit!! but i think its the messa on one. but yeah i like both amps alot thay are both pritty bitchin! oh yeah amp 2 is better for chuggin imo.

  • i agree amp one is the shit!! but i think its the messa on one. but yeah i like both amps alot thay are both pritty bitchin!

  • Amp 1 = Fireball

    Amp 2 = Mesa

Honestly, I'd run both stereo from one 4x12 cab. The Fireball has an amazing mid tone for cutting through the mix and hearing each note clearer. The Mesa, on the other hand has that huge trademark sound that no other amp has been able to capture. I think they'd sound great complimenting each other.

  • Amp 1 is the Mesa, knew it from the first note stuck, and its just better than anything else, even the engl.

  • @Stevenwilliams11 i love how its the engl

  • @Stevenwilliams11 its actually the engl lol check the site

  • I'd have to give my vote to the mesa.

  • Amp1 is tighter sounding and amp2 sounds loosy - it has always been like that german voiced amps vs american voiced amps. Personally I think that mesa is more brutal but engl is good for some more technical stuff.

  • I would literally give my left testicle to have this job. ENGL and Mesa kick serious ass.

  • ENGL \°°/

  • amp 1 all the way !

  • amp 1!

  • my guess amp 2 is Mesa my pick cause has less background noise

  • I like amp 1 more too, great video btw :)

The Engl Fireball is my hot candidate atm anyway :D

  • this demo is invalid because of the mesa has active eq's, having the mesa's trebble ate 3 destroys the mid and bass leaving you with a thin sounding mess, the manual specifically says not to put the treble past 2:30

  • hows that jackson? dk2m right?

  • The Engl wins here, it seems that the Recto's mids are a little too scooped which could be fixed with its numerous tonal capabilities- But both are great amps.

  • Amp 2 was nice and thick. That's my pick!

  • TONY SOPRANO!? IS THAT YOU?

  • I, too, got this backwards! Amp 1 sounds clearer and tighter, where amp 2 sounds fatter with more gain. at least that's what i hear. I was in the market to buy a dual rectifier until i saw this.lol. i may have to go play on an Engle now.

  • Red win !

  • hm i gues the messa was the amp 1 which i liked the most

  • nice video dude, i take the engl, no doubs.

  • mesa raped the engl

  • the red is recto and the green is engl

  • first ine were much better

  • engl beats mesa

  • engl sounds Cristal clear

  • 1 is obviously the ENGL and 2 is the Mesa

1 sounds a lot better IMO

  • lets get started with one of these bad boys hahah great video man :P

  • Comment removed

  • They both kick ass equally IMO.

  • Imo the first one sounds better.

  • id have to say the 1st is the engl and the 2nd is the mesa but ill have to check. thanx the video was really helpful.

  • one of those beehhd boys over here

  • What model is that Mesa? I know the ENGL is a Fireball 100W but I'm not sure with the Mesas

  • @KissMeImPunk it says in the title, its the mighty dual rec 100w

  • does anybody know what mic and cab he is using? im guessing either the shure sm57 or the senhieser e-609 for the mic but anybody know what cab he is using i guess, and if you are positive on the mic, let me know also! thanks

  • Engl for Hard rock, Mesa for heavy metal!

  • @baune121 errrm, NO.

  • @asianaxeman My opinion, so YES

  • @baune121 your opinion is misguided child, go and feast on some danish bacon, worst bacon in the world!

  • @baune121 u r the dummes mother fucker

  • @baune121, your comment should be removed as it is so completely and utterly wrong. Engl has far more juice then mesa, its just a matter of preference how much juice you want. if you can't handle your juice though, you might sound like shit.

  • @hmcg020 Agreed!

  • This guy's cool, but I can just imagine him ordering a sandwich at the local deli...(with that voice and accent) Aye-yo! gimme da pustramee wit da rye, witta side uh ju-ju-b's...lol, juss kiddin..

  • 90's 2 channel Mesa Dual Rectumfryer's!

Cost less than a grand on ebay and craigslist.

Simplicity that will kick your ass to your shoulders!

  • Comment removed

  • Dial them both in, then do the review.

  • Number 1!!!!

  • Rectifier= Tight and high Gain

ENGL= No very tight and high gain

  • Wow. Like trying to choose between the hot blonde and the hot brunette. For just straight forward in-your-face brutallity, I think the Engle is a nasty as they come. From a tweakers point of view, the Mesa is no doubt the king. My best friend is in a band and he plays a DBZ Bird of Prey into a Mesa Dual Rec and it is killer. My vote goes for the Mesa! But it's 1a versus 1b. Very close. Just imagine a full stack of each on opposite sides of the stage. NOW your jamming!

  • @smacman68 i think they are preatty much equal on 6 string guitars but when it gets down to 7 and 8's the engl wins hands down, the messa just cant match the clarity of ANY engl head on low tunings!

  • You could be right. I don't know a whole lot about the 7 & 8 stringers. I will occasionally tune down 1 full step for a few songs, but not alot. Again, I really am not taking anything away from the Engl. I am one of those "anything but Marshall" guys. THEY are completly overrated. When compared to Mesa, Engl, Soldano, Randall, and Orange, Marshalls are outclassed in every category except history. They're not bad amps, just outdated.

  • @smacman68 agreed marshall are quite shocking, look up a band called periphery, they use 7's with engl's and orange cabs, amazing sound!

  • @smacman68 come on man! marshalls are legendary amps..remember that the most of the distortion pedals are going to imitate the sound of a jcm800, a plexi or jmp and so on..they are older than engl's,mesa's and randall and are very versatile! anyway I own an ENGL Fireball and I really love it! I am not taking anything away from engl too, they are just AWESOME! cheers

  • Like I said in my comment, Marshalls are not bad amps (I own two) and they are legendary. What I was getting at was if you had your choice of amps, would you choose a JCM800 over a, say, Mesa Dual Rectifier? Some may, and they would be getting a kick ass amp, but at least these days you have a choice. That's all I was trying to say. Does that make sense or does it sound retarted?

  • @smacman68 it makes sense and it's of course your personal opinion..I am just trying to say that they are not overrated..if I was playing some old hard rock like for ex. deep purple or led zeppelin and had the choice to choose an amp between a marshall and a mesa boogie I would choose the marshall of course..it has to do with the stuff you play..

  • Truer words have never been spoken. One of my dream rigs is the Randy Rhodes Marshall JCM800 with the white tolex cover. THAT is a killer rig. Also, I have been looking into the Orange Rockerverb 100. if I could just get past the bright orange color...

  • @smacman68 you mean the JMP? Yeah Orange amps are killers!!! I have tried a rockerverb and a thunderverb when I was looking for new amp but finaly I decided to buy my fireball!! It's my favorite amp! if there was only an OD/Crunch channel..I would be in heaven..

  • Yea, the JMP is what I meant. Also, I have been hearing alot about a new head out of Texas, I think, called Diamond Nitrox? DBZ Guitars (Dean Zelinski) has teamed up with them and it's supposed to be the Holy Grail of high gain US amps. I saw a clip from NAMM 2010 and he's making custom amp/guitar sets ($15k or so), Looking hard into that! Any word from your end?

  • @smacman68 I am trying to tell you that the only feature wich a fireball should offer is an Overdrive or a Crunch channel! btw I know from what you are talking about! really great stuff ;)

  • @smacman68 orange offers amps in white and black as well, check the website for that particular model. Orange kicks ass too :)

  • The ENGL might have sounded better in these settings, but the truth is that the Mesa is one of the most versatile amps out there, it can go crunchier, it can go bluesy, and it has one of the greatest clean channels ever. With 8 modes I cant see how Id ever choose the fireball.

  • amp 1 has more trebleness in it

  • WHERE DOES THIS MAN LIVE SO I CAN BREAK IN AND STEAL MY FAVORITE HEAD, HE DOESNT NEED THEM ALL! HIS WALLS ARE LITERALLY MADE OF AMPS!

jk, i wont break into your house. :D

  • ENGL. Always a good decision.

  • With those tone settings, surprisingly for me, I liked the Engl. But I do have to admit, I wouldn't consider that the definitive sound for the Mesa, back off on the gain and mids and it would be a lot less buzzy. That's tweaking though, and I u
