@mareckbamf first, i was not offering a dichotomy. i suggested that italians sound italian, and it is very difficult to sound italian when your original language is radically different. of course, there's some people that have facility for other languages. Jussi Bjorling was considered by many to be the best of XXth century tenors. who'd say that's a middleclass voice? but that voice was not italian. it was a swedish with a great management of italian. that sentiment was not italian.

@mareckbamf I personally dont like rap at all, but it is music. music is not just the pitagorical scale (java music), music is not even restricted to 'pitch observance': african tribes sing with little regard if any for pitch, for them what matters is rythm. rap is a sort of urban poetry with great sense for ryhthm. they dont sing, they speak, but with a sense of tone. it's a sort of narrative with instrumental background. most of it may seem crap for those with different aesthetics.

this tenor sounded better before pav messed with him. he was a student of Michael Trimble at the time and not ready for the professional career. he was an inaudible baritone before george london and dick marzollo at the met sent di paolo to Trimble to ask his opiinion. trimble said tenor and proved it by turning him into a wonderful tenor. trimble is too elite and works only with singers who are serious about career. di paolo shouldn't have left his studio soon after this. the next Pav?

When one in introduced to a different way of performing, in this case, "piu legato", the singer will naturally sound worse the first time, but only because they have not practiced the aria in this way. The student is really great. I love how he isn't able to hide his excitement for singing; you can see him trying not to smile during the aria! That's how I feel when I sing.

You will note he states: "Questo 'o Quella" Pavarotti implied these terms as for the singer to make a choice: to sing ON the beat (staccato) or to sing off the beat (legato), i.e., questo o quella; staccato o legato.

I disagree. Pavarotti was not ruining this mans voice. You only see this as the result of the first attempts by Paolo to sing according to Pavarotti's interpretation. Of course he will not be able to sing according to Pavarotti's instruction at first - this takes practice.
@bodiloto Pavarotti was only trying to get Paolo break out of his constant staccato style and try to blend it with a more legato style. This is difficult at any level. A great singer is capable of many different styles, not just their own voice.

Inoltre, i registri alti Pavarotti parla è a risuonare la voce, non aprendo la bocca troppo, altrimenti la risonanza non si verificherà.

Voglio dirti una cosa soltanto che quando un Maestro e davvero bravo dopo i suoi consigli il giovane cantante si sente forte,sente che la sua voce e la voce più bella del mondo,si sente capace di cantare tutto e arriva di cantare degli acuti come bombe! Ciao.

A master class is really about interpretation, musical nuance, language, diction, phrasing, & characterisation. By the time a singer arrives at the stage where a master class might help him, all vocal technique should have been completely mastered & assimilated up to the very highest notes in his voice. If a tenor is still struggling to sing mere Bb's, then he is still a novice student, & is not even close to being ready for the stage.
He is sorely missed at The Met, believe me. I'd take him as a baritone if he were alive. He really understood the backbone of a score, and was the most musical tenor of his generation. This is a lovely gift to us. Thank you.
Pavs here insist on concentration and I realise how difficult it must be to concentrate AND play a part on stage! Those opera singers have a so difficult job to do!
I didnt hear Pavarotti saying he was bad. Thats how singing lessons are and thats how good singing teachers are, meticulous and always seeking perfection. If you ever take lessons with a good teacher you'll see what he means. Cheers
God . . . I've sung in choirs since of was 11 but I had never been serious about singing until I got to college . . . therefore I've known Pavoratti the great Tenor but never really sat down with his music and really been a part of the experience and it's fun to see him hear as a teacher, I have never loved Pavoratti more than I do right now, seeing him in the same light I see my own teachers, a role model and so forth.
I never realized that Pavarotti was so absoultely meticulous and thorough, I thought he just sang, but he was a master at what he did, Scrutanizing EVERYTHING.

@sirdelrio I used Bjorling as an example, because his native tongue is not related to Verdi's. Of the "three tenors", 2 were not Italian. Both Placido and Jose seem to have a grasp of how to sing Verdi. I am no expert, but I am guessing by all the sold out shows, they "sing it right".

@mareckbamf I personally dont like rap at all, but it is music. music is not just the pitagorical scale (java music), music is not even restricted to 'pitch observance': african tribes sing with little regard if any for pitch, for them what matters is rythm. rap is a sort of urban poetry with great sense for ryhthm. they dont sing, they speak, but with a sense of tone. it's a sort of narrative with instrumental background. most of it may seem crap for those with different aesthetics.

Purtroppo un grande cantante non sempre si rivela un buon insegnante : qui, in effetti, PAVAROTTI dà al fanciullo consigli tecnico-vocali un tantinello generici o comunque poco utili ; in ogni caso, meglio i suoi master che quelli di PAMINGO, Carreras, Pippo de' Pippis ( = G. this tenor sounded better before pav messed with him. he was a student of Michael Trimble at the time and not ready for the professional career. he was an inaudible baritone before george london and dick marzollo at the met sent di paolo to Trimble to ask his opiinion. trimble said tenor and proved it by turning him into a wonderful tenor. trimble is too elite and works only with singers who are serious about career. di paolo shouldn't have left his studio soon after this. the next Pav?

When one in introduced to a different way of performing, in this case, "piu legato", the singer will naturally sound worse the first time, but only because they have not practiced the aria in this way. Compare the legato version that Mr. Pavarotti was attempting to explain:

La voce e bellissima ma non sa cantare.

@bodiloto We're NOT talking about whether Pavarotti is going to give his secrets or not. This is irrelevant! The only thing Pavarotti was doing was to give his interpretation of the aria and the resulting manner in which to sing it. You will note he states: "Questo 'o Quella" Pavarotti implied these terms as for the singer to make a choice: to sing ON the beat (staccato) or to sing off the beat (legato), i.e., questo o quella; staccato o legato.

I disagree. Pavarotti was not ruining this mans voice. You only see this as the result of the first attempts by Paolo to sing according to Pavarotti's interpretation. Of course he will not be able to sing according to Pavarotti's instruction at first - this takes practice.

@bodiloto Pavarotti was only trying to get Paolo break out of his constant staccato style and try to blend it with a more legato style. This is difficult at any level. A great singer is capable of many different styles, not just their own voice.

L´apprendimento é essenziale per essere dei grandi nel canto. Se non si ha l´umiltá appropriata ad essere disposti ad accettare critiche da uno che consigli li sá dare, che fará quando uno ,del pubblico, lo manda a stendere per una steccata? Sai che fanno i cantanti di opera quando succede, non discutono ma bensí escono in scena dinuovo e rifanno l´atto. Dopodiché tutti contenti si riparte con l´opera.
Umiltá e sapere acettare i consigli fanno la gente grande, é cosi´ che si inizia.

Lei può sentire che la prima volta quando canta questo ragazzo era quasi 'perfetto'...dopo i 'consigli' di Pavarotti lo stesso tenore ha incominciato di avere problemi negli acuti,e sopratutto non é più così sicuro in se come era prima!

Dove Pavarotti parla del appoggio? Perchè il tenore appoggia sulla gola andando nel registro acuto e Pavarotti non dice nulla? 'la posizione' di quale parla a 6:21Pavarotti non esiste senza l'appoggio giusto e il passaggio!
Questa non e una lezione seria,io ho la sensazione che sono presente a uno spettacolo di Circo di Medrano...

@bodiloto Imbecille! Quando Pavarotti parla della posizione del dopo, alle 6:21, egli intende per ritardare l'attacco delle parole rispetto al orchestra, questo è proprio lo stile di canto legato. Inoltre, i registri alti Pavarotti parla è a risuonare la voce, non aprendo la bocca troppo, altrimenti la risonanza non si verificherà.
Il pubblico ride perché sono ignoranti come te!

@zambrocca amico,io vado a teatro dagli anni 50.In due anni ho visto più di 300 recite con la speranza di sentire di nuovo la voce di Corelli,Aragall,Nicolov,Giacomini e ancora più di 40 tenori che avevo sentito dal vivo nella mia vita...
Voglio dirti una cosa soltanto che quando un Maestro e davvero bravo dopo i suoi consigli il giovane cantante si sente forte,sente che la sua voce e la voce più bella del mondo,si sente capace di cantare tutto e arriva di cantare degli acuti come bombe! Ciao.

It's true though. The singers sometimes glean over the words to try and place the note. The intonation and note has to be conjoined.

A master class is really about interpretation, musical nuance, language, diction, phrasing, & characterisation. By the time a singer arrives at the stage where a master class might help him, all vocal technique should have been completely mastered & assimilated up to the very highest notes in his voice. If a tenor is still struggling to sing mere Bb's, then he is still a novice student, & is not even close to being ready for the stage.

He is sorely missed at The Met, believe me. I'd take him as a baritone if he were alive. He really understood the backbone of a score, and was the most musical tenor of his generation. This is a lovely gift to us. Thank you.

I didnt hear Pavarotti saying he was bad. Thats how singing lessons are and thats how good singing teachers are, meticulous and always seeking perfection. If you ever take lessons with a good teacher you'll see what he means. Cheers

God . . . I've sung in choirs since of was 11 but I had never been serious about singing until I got to college . . . therefore I've known Pavoratti the great Tenor but never really sat down with his music and really been a part of the experience and it's fun to see him hear as a teacher, I have never loved Pavoratti more than I do right now, seeing him in the same light I see my own teachers, a role model and so forth.
