Excellent! Now no one can say you can't play the arcade version at home :-D. This is still a impressive game for its time. Lucky it's now available on Xbox360 arcade and PSN network.
What does your video connector look like on the filter board? I can't seem to get anything on my screen and have no idea how to hook it all up. What needs to be connected to see something?
Whats the starting music? not the Day-to-naaaaa! music but the one thats playing when hes putting together the wires at the beginnging? Is it exclusive to the arcade version?
This 1993 version only had a deluxe version, right? Plus, it's a single -player only game, which means back then there was a long lineup before anyone could ever play this.
In some ways yes the Model 2 arcade version looks better than the Dreamcast version.
In MANY ways the Dreamcast version looks better than the Model 2 arcade version.
Technically, the Dreamcast version blows the arcade away (in most ways).
artistically, the arcade version SEEMS better because it looks more realistic. The Dreamcast's graphics are SO enhanced & shiney it almost looks cartoony.
In contrast to your comment, I disagree. In every way, the 1993/1994 arcade version blows the Dreamcast (Daytona USA 2001) version away, especially when it comes to soundtracks.
Areas were arcade looks better: *sharp angular corners *colors (fewer but better choices) *Sonic carving in the mountain *some of the textures on road and grass *monitor walls in Seaside Street Galaxy Areas were Dreamcast looks better: *resolution *number of polygons *lighting (its amazing volumetric per-pixel!) *draw-distance (no popup) *most of the texture-mapping

am2's still around...someone just needs to tell them to SAVE SEGA! I still love Sega, but their glory days are what made me love them. We need to see something like that again..
Ahhh the MODEL 2 board, made possible by the engineering work of Martin Marietta adding to what General Electric Aerospace had already done with the MODEL 1 board.
Martin Marietta then merged with Lockheed to form Lockheed Martin. LM then created a graphics company, well really a division within LM, called Real3D, and they designed the MODEL 3 board.
It's ashame LM and SEGA couldn't work out a deal for a home console (i.e. Saturn 2) using Real3D's outstanding graphics tech.
Hey, Quick question... I remember the daytona machines in my arcade playing the music you have while you're soldering and not the one later in the video. Do you know if maybe there was a different version of the machine or something?
the music that is playing while he's soldiering is the Selector music. it's used once one person starts a game, selects their track and car, and then has to wait 10 seconds incase someone else wants to join in the race in one of the other seats/linked cabinets.
I like it BUT the demo video is diffrent that any other daytona i have seen, do you know why. can this game link and if so what would the demo video be then?
Still a great game. Overall, I think Daytona, despite being the first of the Model 2 games, also remained the most graphically impressive overall. Though Virtual On would be at least a close second.
Luckily there are several arrange versions for everyone to enjoy. And the music in later versions and domestic conversions sounds much better (at least "technically"). :)
Hey masterofoutrun, consider your own point of view and DON'T WORRY about anyone else if you think it's bad. I actually agree with the others on this one. It is good music. It was just bad quality because he didn't use DVD recording. Oh and it was great music for it's time. Many remixes...Yes, people all want a new Daytona USA game; presumably a home port of Daytona USA 2: Power Edition.
o wat i wouldn't give to have the actual boards hanging on my wall and playing this demo all the time in my house through a nice sound system. oh well, i'll settle for the Saturn and it's nice CD sound for now.
Top stuff! I wonder if HDTVs are therefore capable of doing this... been interested in getting Time Crisis running on my projector though the arcade screens were rear projected I'm not sure if the gun would work or not.
That's what was freaking me out watching your video - I used to work as a service engineer back in the 90s and was never able to get Model2 hardware working on a regular CRT, it's great that your TV supports the resolution. I remember I had to try and get a Sonic the Fighters working on a Sega Swing cabinet, gave up in the end and booted a Fighting Vipers out of a Megalo to make way.
Good work man - one other thing; what are you doing about power? Are you using the same transformer and power supply unit which was used in the cabinet?
No, just a power supply I bought. You don't need the transformer unless you want to power the force feedback motors :) You just need +5v AC to power up all the boards.
Yes it's funny how Sega tried to convince people that they would make an arcade-perfect version for Saturn, when Saturn was nowhere near remotely close to the power of Model 2.
Yep, if only the Saturn had been based off the Model 2... They had the choice of using an Intel i960 or IBM PowerPC 603 CPU with Martin Marietta/Real3D graphics but they opted for Hitachi and tried their luck with an in-house VDP. Then, a year later they realized they made a huge mistake and crawled back to Real3D to remake the Saturn or some add-on but it was all too late...
Well you know Real3D was working on an affordable graphics processor for the Saturn that was on par with Model 2 (I have articles to prove it). And I'm pretty sure the 25 MHz Intel i960 didn't cost more than 2 SH-2's @ 28.6 MHz at the time. I really think they could have made it affordable by fall of '95.
however you turn it, it turns out that the satrun was overpriced (at launch) and hard to program for. furthermore it lacked some of the features ps1 had.
I also don't understand why they didn't use the tech from their arcade machines, just at an afforable price (a low-cost real 3d chip with a good enough single cpu would do the trick).
@airraid7777 Actually its really IDENTICAL to the Model 2 version i used a steering wheel and the controls are Identically the same but if you use a CONTROLLER the game registers it as if you are using a steering wheel turning HARD Right or left.
In the aracdes it was common to link many daytona usa machines up together on a LAN, for multiplayer support, using 10Mbit BNC cable if i remember correctly
(l looked behind one of the units in a local arcade once and saw them linked up that way)
Twin Daytonas are connected with standard digital, optical cables. You can get these cables anywhere now, and most people use them to get digital sound output from dvd players or current generation games consoles :]
This is the 1993 edition. It's not fake otherwise all the colours would be incorrect as they are in Nebula. Can't you see the huge PCB cage with the Model 2 board in it?
yes I saw that cage. You may right in the case of the 1993 version. You cam make Nebula show the right colours by customizing the config (emulator.ini). Best results on ATI Radeon 7500. Did you thought about running uClinux on the Daytona PCB (i80960-KB) by hanging on to special points on the ROM bank? Is that PCB a pre-version of these ones sold in 1994 - or are only the ROMs different?
It's impossible to make the colours perfect in Nebula due to incorrect emulation at present. You can only change the lighting in the ini file, not the colour pallette itself. I have tried with both nVidia and ATi cards. The new version (0.6) will have even more accurate emulation though.
The 1993 version is only in Deluxe, standalone cabinets. It does not have linkup capabilities and had different rolling demos. I do not know how to dump the rom, but I may send it away to be done by Guru.
So let me get this straight, you bought a Daytona board and wired it up with a RGB->YUV board and put it on your TV just to see it run in your house without having usable controls?
how in the world did you get a non-interlaced hi-res game to run on a normal TV? or does the JAMMA converter take care of that? u'r probably using component video input too for the 480p right?
It's the original 1993 version. The biggest difference between this one and the more common 1994 revision is that the CPU cars on this one are more aggressive.

shadows don't flicker.
