  • Excellent! Now no one can say you can't play the arcade version at home :-D. This is still a impressive game for its time. Lucky it's now available on Xbox360 arcade and PSN network.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • What month in 93 was this game released in japan. Was it before Octobers Ridge Racer?

  • What does your video connector look like on the filter board? I can't seem to get anything on my screen and have no idea how to hook it all up. What needs to be connected to see something?

  • model2 had the most powerful hardware in that era.

it was developed in cooperation with Martin Marietta and it's cpu was Intel i960 @ 25 MHz. maybe it's more powerful than ps2

  • @korlds -. ps2 was capable of better texture effects, faster cpu, more geometry. but this arcade machine was amazing for the time.

  • Funny... a game from 1993 as powerful as a ps2 if not better.

  • Lol AM2 make all the good games! What screen are you useing?

  • Unbelieveable smooth grafix!!

  • wow... with your TV its looks soo smooth... even smoother from SEGA RACING CLASSIC lol...

    nice work mate!!

  • The game runs a smooth 60 frames per second and even today that is still impressive it even outclassesmost of todays racing games :)

  • its so smooth compared to the saturn version. sega fucked up bad with the saturn and its expensive and poor 3d hardware.

  • but nice work man but you can't play it

  • how you insert coin in tv of this game?

  • wich is the name of that song?

  • Cool video.

  • Can you do it on an HDTV?

  • sleek.

  • I love this intro version better!

  • the most advanced pc game at the time was doom.

    compared to this... meh...

  • This is so my new themesong

  • the game of best graphics on model 2!

  • @retrup Also the first Model 2 game.

  • Awesome, can you post a link about real3d article?

  • Please! Insert coin!!!!

  • Whats the starting music? not the Day-to-naaaaa! music but the one thats playing when hes putting together the wires at the beginnging? Is it exclusive to the arcade version?

  • Do you have a steering wheel that you wired for this game?

  • This 1993 version only had a deluxe version, right? Plus, it's a single -player only game, which means back then there was a long lineup before anyone could ever play this.

  • Day-to-NAAAAA!!!!!!!

    he Memories Remains

  • It's amazing that the Dreamcast version of Daytona is 7-8 years older, yet the 1993 arcade version still looks better. Not by much, but it does.

  • In some ways yes the Model 2 arcade version looks better than the Dreamcast version.

In MANY ways the Dreamcast version looks better than the Model 2 arcade version.

Technically, the Dreamcast version blows the arcade away (in most ways).

artistically, the arcade version SEEMS better because it looks more realistic. The Dreamcast's graphics are SO enhanced & shiney it almost looks cartoony.

  • In contrast to your comment, I disagree. In every way, the 1993/1994 arcade version blows the Dreamcast (Daytona USA 2001) version away, especially when it comes to soundtracks.

  • Plus, I wasn't expecting the 'strange' pitstop for Rule Of The 9th, as said by a Dreamcast review by TeamXR.

  • Areas were arcade looks better: *sharp angular corners *colors (fewer but better choices) *Sonic carving in the mountain *some of the textures on road and grass *monitor walls in Seaside Street Galaxy Areas were Dreamcast looks better: *resolution *number of polygons *lighting (its amazing volumetric per-pixel!) *draw-distance (no popup) *most of the texture-mapping
  • There has never been even a reasonable conversion of this game IMO .when are we going to get the orginal version of the best sellling arcade game if all time on xbla, ffs sega such a missed opertunity

  • How did you connect up the video? Does medium res work on modern tv's or did you use a scan converter (if so which one?)

  • This game still somehow has awesome graphics

  • The music instantly makes its graphics amazing.

  • What?

  • It's a joke...

  • My friend said he found an aracde near where I live with Daytona USA, Daytona USA 2, AND Ridge Racer. He better not be lying or... *I imitate throat slitting action*

  • Daytona USA 1's better than DUSA 2.

  • jajaj que bueno que esta! :D

  • So much love on this page.

    :)

  • 2:32 makes me feel like I'm in a dream.

  • WTB AM2 BACK PLEASE :( sega sux now

  • am2's still around...someone just needs to tell them to SAVE SEGA! I still love Sega, but their glory days are what made me love them. We need to see something like that again..

  • lol, why didnt u insert coin?\

  • how much was that model 2 board?

  • Ahhh the MODEL 2 board, made possible by the engineering work of Martin Marietta adding to what General Electric Aerospace had already done with the MODEL 1 board.

Martin Marietta then merged with Lockheed to form Lockheed Martin. LM then created a graphics company, well really a division within LM, called Real3D, and they designed the MODEL 3 board.

It's ashame LM and SEGA couldn't work out a deal for a home console (i.e. Saturn 2) using Real3D's outstanding graphics tech.

  • The Dreamcast was more powerful than the Model 3.

  • In some ways yes, in other ways no.

  • Model 3 was more powerful than Dreamcast in many ways. Model 3 had a higher pixel fillrate than Dreamcast, and more texture ROM space.

  • GREAT!!!!

  • アナタ ワ デイトナ オタキング!!!

  • absolutely awesome. i wonder if you needed to use a LM1881?

  • where can i get this rom

  • how do u get that attract demo?

  • u can't play it =p

  • At that point, no :(

But have a look at my other video where I managed to get controls working.

  • Hey, Quick question... I remember the daytona machines in my arcade playing the music you have while you're soldering and not the one later in the video. Do you know if maybe there was a different version of the machine or something?

  • It only plays that music if the cabinet is set to linkup mode.

  • the music that is playing while he's soldiering is the Selector music. it's used once one person starts a game, selects their track and car, and then has to wait 10 seconds incase someone else wants to join in the race in one of the other seats/linked cabinets.

  • I'm so jealous and I'm too retarded to ever to do it myself.

this is awesome man nice job

  • I like it BUT the demo video is diffrent that any other daytona i have seen, do you know why. can this game link and if so what would the demo video be then?

  • Still a great game. Overall, I think Daytona, despite being the first of the Model 2 games, also remained the most graphically impressive overall. Though Virtual On would be at least a close second.

  • Wow...but the sad thing is... when your SON see all that fantastic video and say: This sucks!

  • Graphically, but this was back when games were about substance, not style.

  • I disagree, style was an important part of games even back then.

Do you think they put the best graphics technology into their machines back then just for the lulz? no.

Unfortunatly, Daytona could use some serious work in the sound department.

I don't care what fanboys think, from a musicians point of view, that music is god awful.

  • Luckily there are several arrange versions for everyone to enjoy. And the music in later versions and domestic conversions sounds much better (at least "technically"). :)

  • Are you, by any chance, in a subtle fashion, calling Daytona USA's music bad?

  • Those daytona musics are classic! They don't sound awful at all to me.

  • Hey masterofoutrun, consider your own point of view and DON'T WORRY about anyone else if you think it's bad. I actually agree with the others on this one. It is good music. It was just bad quality because he didn't use DVD recording. Oh and it was great music for it's time. Many remixes...Yes, people all want a new Daytona USA game; presumably a home port of Daytona USA 2: Power Edition.

  • loved the music in this game where is the soundtrack so I can listen to it while I drive in the car lol

  • could you work daytona usa on windowsd vista

  • n00b

  • Troll.

  • Sure, with the M2 emulator.

  • that's awesome! and i also happen to like this version of the "Lets Go Away" Song Better than the other ones!

  • Your the man, keep up the cool work

  • o wat i wouldn't give to have the actual boards hanging on my wall and playing this demo all the time in my house through a nice sound system. oh well, i'll settle for the Saturn and it's nice CD sound for now.

  • Awesome, 15 years old and not even a wrinkle in sight. ;)

  • Nice one, I thought most 3D games required a med res monitor, obviously not for model 2!

Funny how Sega tried convincing us the Saturn was a model 2 derivative. Derogative more like, that looks faaaar cleaner!

  • It does need a med-res monitor, but my TV is capable of outputting that resolution apparently!

  • Top stuff! I wonder if HDTVs are therefore capable of doing this... been interested in getting Time Crisis running on my projector though the arcade screens were rear projected I'm not sure if the gun would work or not.

  • It worked on a 42" standard-def panasonic PWD6 plasma and a pioneer 50" 1080p LX508D plasma

  • That's what was freaking me out watching your video - I used to work as a service engineer back in the 90s and was never able to get Model2 hardware working on a regular CRT, it's great that your TV supports the resolution. I remember I had to try and get a Sonic the Fighters working on a Sega Swing cabinet, gave up in the end and booted a Fighting Vipers out of a Megalo to make way.

  • Yeah, you could never get it to run on a regular CRT. You need a screen which supports medium res (496x384). Luckily most modern plasmas do :)

  • Good work man - one other thing; what are you doing about power? Are you using the same transformer and power supply unit which was used in the cabinet?

  • No, just a power supply I bought. You don't need the transformer unless you want to power the force feedback motors :) You just need +5v AC to power up all the boards.

  • Yes it's funny how Sega tried to convince people that they would make an arcade-perfect version for Saturn, when Saturn was nowhere near remotely close to the power of Model 2.

  • it was more powerful than a model 2

  • Yep, if only the Saturn had been based off the Model 2... They had the choice of using an Intel i960 or IBM PowerPC 603 CPU with Martin Marietta/Real3D graphics but they opted for Hitachi and tried their luck with an in-house VDP. Then, a year later they realized they made a huge mistake and crawled back to Real3D to remake the Saturn or some add-on but it was all too late...

  • Because if Sega would of had a model 2 console it would of cost at least $2000.00.

The Saturn it self cost $400 when it came out. Do the math.

  • Well you know Real3D was working on an affordable graphics processor for the Saturn that was on par with Model 2 (I have articles to prove it). And I'm pretty sure the 25 MHz Intel i960 didn't cost more than 2 SH-2's @ 28.6 MHz at the time. I really think they could have made it affordable by fall of '95.

  • however you turn it, it turns out that the satrun was overpriced (at launch) and hard to program for. furthermore it lacked some of the features ps1 had.

I also don't understand why they didn't use the tech from their arcade machines, just at an afforable price (a low-cost real 3d chip with a good enough single cpu would do the trick).

  • nintendo already had the near-model 2 quality hardware in 1994 for their 'ultra 64' (later known as nintendo 64).

  • @airraid7777 Actually its really IDENTICAL to the Model 2 version i used a steering wheel and the controls are Identically the same but if you use a CONTROLLER the game registers it as if you are using a steering wheel turning HARD Right or left.

  • wow 1993, i thought that this game was released first in 1994. and what's the difference between both games?

  • The '94 version is basically a revision to the hardware. A number of the more "violent" opponents had their A.I. toned down.

  • you make the wiring seem easy

  • OH YEAAAAHHH!!! BABY!!!!! This is also emulated very well on the model 2 emulator so I've seen. THESE GRAPHICS WERE MIND BLOWING BACK IN THE DAY :)

  • just a thing, how do u control the cars? u should find a way to connect a joypad to the board =P

  • it said network boards mising what dose that mean

  • In the aracdes it was common to link many daytona usa machines up together on a LAN, for multiplayer support, using 10Mbit BNC cable if i remember correctly

(l looked behind one of the units in a local arcade once and saw them linked up that way)

  • Twin Daytonas are connected with standard digital, optical cables. You can get these cables anywhere now, and most people use them to get digital sound output from dvd players or current generation games consoles :]

  • ah cool thanks for the info. btw awesome project

  • cool thanks for the info. btw awesome project

  • AWESOME

  • Whoa Shit 5 fucking stars!

  • hi, could you please tell me where did you get the "select circuit/car/tranny" music? I can't find it on emule :(

  • try on galbidia hotel they have all games ost! ;)

  • Geeze, this and Virtua Racer used to eat all my tokens.

  • I was curious, have you been able to actually connect some sort of control system and play the game?

Even if you haven't, this is still pretty cool to see, nice work.

  • I think that the Video on the CRT is a fake,

because the shadows under the cars are

flickering, which is a evidience that Daytona

is ran on an Sega Model 2 Emulator (surely

Nebula). I'm right? In my favourite game hall

on the real Daytona USA gaming machine the

    shadows don't flicker.

  • This is the 1993 edition. It's not fake otherwise all the colours would be incorrect as they are in Nebula. Can't you see the huge PCB cage with the Model 2 board in it?

  • yes I saw that cage. You may right in the case of the 1993 version. You cam make Nebula show the right colours by customizing the config (emulator.ini). Best results on ATI Radeon 7500. Did you thought about running uClinux on the Daytona PCB (i80960-KB) by hanging on to special points on the ROM bank? Is that PCB a pre-version of these ones sold in 1994 - or are only the ROMs different?

  • It's impossible to make the colours perfect in Nebula due to incorrect emulation at present. You can only change the lighting in the ini file, not the colour pallette itself. I have tried with both nVidia and ATi cards. The new version (0.6) will have even more accurate emulation though.

The 1993 version is only in Deluxe, standalone cabinets. It does not have linkup capabilities and had different rolling demos. I do not know how to dump the rom, but I may send it away to be done by Guru.

  • i played a 1994 arcade twincab daytona recently and the shadows did flicker also, one of the screens showed the washed out look of the emulator.

  • a new version? when is it relesed?

  • You should probably read the description on the left.

  • what i there to see? i have read the descripti

    on

  • Then why did you ask when it's released? It's a set of 1993 PCBs, it's not emulated.

  • no i meant the emulator you said that a new version of the emulator(0.6) was going to be relesed.

  • It's already out.

  • wtf happens in the last 4 sec. ?

  • do the controls work?

  • So let me get this straight, you bought a Daytona board and wired it up with a RGB->YUV board and put it on your TV just to see it run in your house without having usable controls?

(Because if so, that's AWESOME. I want one too)

  • nice intro vid. :)

    i like it

  • how in the world did you get a non-interlaced hi-res game to run on a normal TV? or does the JAMMA converter take care of that? u'r probably using component video input too for the 480p right?

  • The first time I saw this game my jaw dropped. I think it was 1995 and the best racing game I knew was Virtua Racing for Genesis.

  • is that the japanese version (seeing that it doesn't have the "recycle it, don't trash it" ad that the US version has)?

  • Most probably. I think the 1993 version was only japanese, google it.

  • i am going green with envy :Q____

  • I love this song, i always remember it blaring in the arcades.

  • you daft prick! lol, good job, i like it.

  • Has been great watching this one, good luck with the controls. Dedication to excess.

  • AndyGeezer FTW!! That guy is a legend..

  • thats view in rolling demo is totaly different

  • It's the original 1993 version. The biggest difference between this one and the more common 1994 revision is that the CPU cars on this one are more aggressive.

  • wat u mean by aggressive?

  • They bite your car if you come too close. >_>

  • oh by the way it's alot difference from the emulator in speed
