  • One of my favorite all time country songs! What happened to music like this?

  • Good stuff

  • Great classic country. I love this song. A great song with a great story, what more can you ask for? Was tjhis his only hit? If not I bet this was his biggest...

  • THIS IS BULLSHIT. CAL SMITH SHOULD BE SUCKIN ON MY TWAT

  • @hahafakeandgay go to hell

  • I am surprised that someone actually posted this great old video. I saw Cal do a show at a biker bar in Northern Michigan in the fall of 1977. He was 45 and at the top of his game. If you like this ,you will certainly like hearing him do "The Heart of the Matter" and "She Talked a Lot About Texas". I hope he is doing well and knows that he still has a lot of fans. My wife was unable to go so I gave her ticket to a guy that was pure rock n roll. He became a country fan !

  • @zoodwear I agree this is a great song, i've loved it since the first time i heard it on the radio back in 1974 and i was 8 years old. LOL!!

  • i love this song go cal

  • I wrote a song no one in Nashville wants to record it. " Honey Why Don't You Cut Your Toenails You're Tearin Up All The Sheets " I guess Nashville really is too uptight these days.

  • this is how country music is suppost to sound like, this has always been one of my favorite songs

  • One of the best songs that was ever written and sung by the perfect singer. What a classic!!

  • Genuine Country Music!

  • this is real country music!!!

  • Country music like this is gone now it stupied shit with no class

  • This song reminds me of me.

  • I love Cal Smith what a good voice

  • This is a geat song This is REAL music

  • This is what country music should be, not that MTV-like slop served on country radio these days.

  • There wasn't a lot of country songs I liked. This one for some reason really touched me and every so often I listen to it again. I think it is the story the song tells and how life can be gone in a blink of an eye. I first head it on WJJD 1160 AM in Chicago in 1974 when I was 15 and it seems like only yesterday. Beautiful song.

  • so cool and classic fffffnnnnaaaa

  • yep, TOTAL classic. Brings a tear to my eye still after all these years.

  • great song love it. classic

  • What a great story about love, life and endings....beautiful...classic country at its' best. Thanks.

  • makes me want to cry everytime I listen to it!

  • so beautiful!!

  • me and my cousins made a new version called " Country Blumpkin"

  • Apart from Cal's gritty voice (in S. Carolina a girl called it a cement mixer voice) isn't the backing superb?

  • @Wordsmith37

    Was she married ter Bill?!!

  • Why don't you block the foul language viewers? Why need that gutter language.

  • great song..

  • always sounds great even after my 50s lol

  • One of my favourite country and Western songs ,in fact has been in my favourites for years, and have on all forms of recording systems from cassette tapes to now iTunes..

Served 23 years in the military, part of which was SASR,but this song can still bring a tear to my eye.

  • NOW THATS FUCKING GOD DAMN COUNTRY FUCKING MUSIC HOOAH

  • @100reescout I Fought For you to have free speech and you do,You have no right to disrespect children ladies, you abuse your right of free speech with your foul mouth. You do not respect yourself. You may need to do some I'm sorry There are a whole lot of us vets who I bet could teach you

  • @dwayne22891 hey for one thing what kind of vet were if you never cussed , what were you in the girl scouts for one thing you havent fought for me my grandfathers to my uncles from my father who served 10 years in the marine corp as a infantrymen like me and my brother and whole lot of my relatives who fought from WW1,WW2, korea, to vietnam so as far as my freedom of speech well its already been payed for but not by YOU so get off your high horse and act like you've you done me a favor ok hero!

  • @100reescout -dear children-freedom of speech is "The Right to Critisize the Government" not using obscene language in public- that's childish- just looking for attention since baby days- grow up- a grey eagle a govt. of one.

  • @dwayne22891 hey maybe we got of on the wrong foot ,at the time i wrote that i was a little drunk and enjoy that sort of music because it reminds me of my mother and uncle who have passed on, didnt mean no disrespect to you or your service and i apologize and if i offended anyone else my uncle was a korean war vet who showed me alot about breaken horses , that song just brings back alot of memories for me thats all so again i apologize for my conduct.

  • It had to be a difficult song to sing.

It has a lot of words and syllables right on top of each other and Cal had to hit all of them while keeping a sincere, conversational tone.

  • This is a great video by one of the best, Cal Smith. That used to be my nickname when playing country music. Oh well, I love the country.

  • My mom's all time favorite song...

  • There will never be another Country Bumpkin or Don Wayne!

  • i really love this song, always have its really awesome.the words are so touching.cal smith rocks!!! penny

  • i love this song this is the kind of music we need today

  • todays so called country stars suck

  • @lawgirl2014 you got it

  • My grandpa who was a truck driver all his life's CB handle was country bumpkin. I love and miss him so much. I dedicate this song to him.

  • I love this song, grew up listening to country bumpkins

  • True country, we need more like it today.

  • who on this earth could sang this song?

  • This was the first song I heard from Cal & I've been a fan to this day.

  • If i can find a composer I will be able to make music like this story songs

  • god bless old country music .... I hope it never goes away........

  • @thp501 retard, it's already gone, that's why it's old you fucking dumbfuck

  • @thp501 Amen !

  • Only great, this is real country music and man do I miss it. I wish the new singers would sit down and listen to real country and get back to it.

  • RIP Don Wayne. One of the BEST country songs ever.

  • @keepontrukin1 aka Don Chaote. My dad and him served together in the military and they played music together. Pretty cool to be able to tell someone that. =)

  • @captnemo1965 Thats awesome!

  • The songwriter Don Wayne passed away yesterday. He had an interesting story about how a producer told him to stop writing songs that were too hillbilly (a chronic problem in Nashville, as companies always are pushing the pop sound), that "no one wanted to hear about that frost on the pumpkin". Wayne took the naysaying and turned it into a number one hit, proving that country fans don't want to hear pop. Country fans want to hear country. Imagine that logic, Music Row?

  • @uofmrebel Preach it brother !!!!!

  • @uofmrebel - I don't like the modern country but I love this stuff from the grand ole opry. My parents had a stack of records of different songs and groups from 50's and 60's do wap, to my dad's polkas, (he is full blooded polish), to big band, and yes, this awesome country sound

  • @uofmrebel country music is the work of satan. i can't believe you are such a stupid motherfucker, who has no life and only cares about yourself. Seriously, grow up. you're such a motherfucking moron, no one likes you and i anally penetrated your dad right in the bumpkin. ocelot shit cunt wizard! take me down, you salty crapshooter! fuck you and your father too!!

  • @hahafakeandgay you are an absolute idiot whoever you are. I'll pray that your bitterness and anger subsides, however, it is doubtful as i've never seen anyone with such a foul, disgusting, redneck mouth.

  • Comment removed

  • @hahafakeandgay You need not to take the lords name in vain he is real and i will pray for you hopefully one day you will stand in front of him and he will cast you into hell and oh yea country music is a way of life for me.

  • @Halofann YOU'RE A GAY BITCH! SUCKLE MY DICKTWICK

  • @winwarfarm70 oh yeah, and you're the redneck, you bitch. If you like country music, then you are automatically a redneck.

  • Comment removed

  • @winwarfarm70

I agree. I'll be praying too for whoever it is. Perhaps God can help. Perhaps. He has worked other miracles before....And calling whoever that is a redneck is disgracing other rednecks.

  • They played this song at my cousins funeral a couple weeks ago. I miss him so much. R.I.P. Stephen Glenn.

  • @SandstarSilverstar NoNe who keeps it country!!

  • @SandstarSilverstar An intelligent individual could dislike this, you fucking swine.

  • @hahafakeandgay

And that individual can't be you, because your dumber than Galbatorix. If you don't know what I'm talking about, your even stupider. I have one more think to say to you. Eulaliaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @DStegner71 He looks scared because he is singing IN FRONT OF (without being blinded by the lights) to everybody who cared to go and listen to him, stage fright, maybe??? Thats how it wasin our day.

  • Cal Smith

  • Thanks for sharing this; it brings back not only the days when it was a hit. My wife, Marcie and I loved this song. Now it brings back special memories of her, the Country Bumpkin I lost to cancer 8 years ago. See you later, CB, see you later. Love ya!

Sidenote: We saw him sing this song and many of his others when he was just an accompanying singer whom I am trying to recall, possibly Conway Twitty. Thanks again.

  • todays country music is not crap, its pure s...

  • Just a few of the country singers today can do this kind caliber of country music.Strait,Jackson,Paisley

  • @MySeds Paisley,Pfft....please stop, that mass produced shit.Jennings Jones Nelson Yokam Cash Haggard Williams Jr.Thats country...

  • wish the country singers today could sing like this dont get me wrong they are good but there will never be country music like this again

  • I have always loved this song. Never thought it'd end up part of my life lol, but we found a cat that we looked at and just kinda went "Bumpkin!" I couldn't help but smile, had to listen to this song again...even though it has a sad ending, but life always has a sad end

  • this hits my heart new country never does

  • This was when Country Music singers could sing!!. No need for computers to make them sound better!...Bring back real country music!!!

  • Real! Genuine! All we have today is fake and people trying to destroy America and what it means to be American. God bless America!

  • This came out when my oldest son was a baby, and I loved it. It's nice to hear it again; I love the old ballads that actually tell stories, and Cal, along with Tom T. Hall, had that technique mastered!

  • Tear time here, this song always gets me, country at it's best! :)

  • i do stuff like this on my site or i try lol

  • People who hate it are part of what is wrong with country music all of the failed pop and rock stars who lost fame go to country and still sing like they did all of the greats up in heaven looking down in shame we more of the older guys still in country to slap some sense in Nashville and bring country back

  • @adogman12345 sorry but all of the greats are sadly gone. that time in music will never been seen again. and i will miss it.

  • i know a guy who went to nashville and when he sings it sounds just like carl and they didnt even look at him they said his style has "faded out", more like weeded out,

  • Cal Smith was an underrated singer. Just listen to the second verse of this song, which is almost all tongue-twisters but he makes it not only sound great but believable. Go to the Roadhouse on satellite radio for this kind of stuff, but Nashville lost the recipe.

  • This song was released at a time in my life (teenager) when most every emotion is amplified. I recall my girlfiend and her mother loving this song and well, that is when I became a country music fan too. Thank you Mrs Belle and FA.

  • My son likes stuff that sends me to the bath room to recover. Music like this he thinks is boring. We just don't have music with a melody and understandable lyrics any more. You're right, the country classics of the 30's and 40's and 50's was a (maybe "the") classic period in American music. Cal Smith (Shofner) is just a whole lot of all right.

  • everytime i hear this song i can't help but think of how i met my husband... he will forever be my country bumpkin. I love you baby

  • A great song

  • 7 losers

  • great!!!

  • Before fancy recording studios singers had to use their own voices. Cal Smith,

Marty Robbins, Connie Smith, Patsy Cline and hundreds of others became stars using their own talent.

  • I really like this song.... Cal Smith does a wonderful job on it. Anyone know who wrote the song?

  • This song reminds me a lot of a song by the Browns (Jim Ed Brown and his two sisters) did in 1959 called The Three Bells. The title character of that song was "Little Jimmy Brown"

  • ONE OF THE SADEST SONGS EVER

  • The first time I saw Cal Smith, was at Ernest Tubbs Record Shop. He was playing in Tubbs band and I loved his voice and still do. I also met Jack Greene and Mr. tubbs. Brit1234ish

  • sure is great to hear this song again after 30 yrs wow were time go

  • I Have a friend that gos by that name on the CB in NC.

  • Love this song, heard it on the radio. You never hear music about this sort of stuff in modern music.

  • Whatever happened to "country" music?

  • Too hillbilly ! ugh !

  • still my favorite song ever! Thank you for posting it here.

  • I've Played Professionally Most of My Life, All My Life, & I Do Not Believe I've Ever Heard Anyone with a VOICE Like Cal Smith's, With ALL That FINE, FINE RESONANCE. Not to Mention Cal's Voice Control & Unique Phrasing Abilities & SKILLED STORYTELLING GIFTS, That He GIVES to Each & Every One of US!

Cal Smith Sings 'More In-Tune' Than Most Voices in the Business Even Today, Captivating Our DEEPEST Feelings of LOVE & EMOTION! Thanks Cal!
