You can bet your bottom dollar Tal, after a year on the road as Beck's bassist, would make an even more mindblowing jam partner for Marcus now. She was barely 19 - 20 years old here!!
i cant spend verry much money on things like that because im not that rich so i play on a ibanez EDB 405, it may not be the most expensive bass but i love it !
I love how Miller's playing isn't just a bunch of rudiments (*cough* Victor Wooten) but a big outburst of GROOVE. Tal Wilkenfeld was a pleasant surprise to see in this video.
So, the next time your at your local music stor and some little fat girl plugs in next, to you give her a smile and encouragement, before she tears you up.
I'm surprised Tal didn't rip it up on a Fender. I think it would sound better than what ever bass she's playing right now in the video. Not saying anything bad about the brand and bass she's playing. I just love Fender and I think it's better than any other brand in my opinion I even own a 2005 MIM Jazz Bass.
She uses a Sadowsky Jazz, you twirp. About 5 times the price of your MIM Jazz, which is still a very decent bass, but you realize she is PAID to play these basses?
Yeah, riiiiiiight... Endorsing artists don't get paid. Smaller names get free gear, bigger names get cold hard cash and free gear. I live in AZ, I got to meet a few big names, like for instance a famous heavy metal bassist, let's call him David, and when I asked him how much Peavey was paying him, he did not say "Are you kidding? I pay Peavey to play their gear!". His answer was a polite "Sorry, can't tell." (as expected).
Correct, Sadowsky doesn't do endorsing, even jason newsted who got about 15 of them paid full price for all of them. He got the 10th one for free. but that's it.
Personally, you guys might disagree with me, but alot of other brands beat "the original," I just feel right now that Lakland, Sadowsky, Modulus, etc.. are making better jazz basses then Fender...I play fenders too and they're really nice and i love them but there is a world outside of Fender.
not to mention paying more than a fender. it make sense eh. fender started all of it.. and people think that its the original.. the real thing. i still feel that it is the real thing, so when i think of classic jazzbass sound, i think of fender.
i doubt there's any other brand that makes decent jazz bass just as cheap as fender.
Well the J bass was literally invented by Fender so of course you would bring that to mind. But American Fenders can get expensive, while the cheap MIM Fenders I feel are out done by Warmoth or SX. Fenders just have a classic appeal that will never die out
You shut the fuck up you stupid prick I bet there are plenty of others on here you could say that about. You just chose me because I insulted your stupid brand of basses which actually does endorse its players now they have the Will Lee Model now so all of you elitists out there who say Sadowsky doesn't endorse their players well you can all shut up now
It has quality products on every level from Squier to MIM to MIJ to MIA and everywhere in between plus their basses and guitars have a much smoother playability they also can be super modded with different necks, pickups, paintjobs, and other features. Plus you also have a star studded players list on both guitars and basses anyone from the artists in Hellogoodbye to Eric Clapton to Victor Bailey to Steve Bailey to Tony Franklin to Robin Trower to George Fullerton and the late Jaco Pastorius.
That was pretty fuckin' cool! To see two great talents trying not to step on eachother's toes...each of them is equally as good supporting as well as soloing.
You know what would be a cool guitar bass duet Flea and Steve Lukather since they both have that heavy sound to their playing and they both like to play fast too.
pure class for marcus to let an up and comer showcase he talents. mean while he is trying to lay back....like marcus could never rise to the forefront.
LOTS of other manufacturers also make "Jazz" basses. A "Jazz" bass typically has that body style and the two single coil pickups. Fender created it back in the '60s (I believe), but they no longer are the only producer of a Jazz bass.
Tal is playing a Sadowsky Jazz Bass, not a Fender Jazz bass.
The name "Jazz Bass" is owned by Fender, and therefore any other Basses that may even be almost exactly the same aren't actually "Jazz Basses", they are "Jazz style Basses". I may sound like I am being a bit of a jerk, but the person who I was replying to seems to be arguing against blatant fact. I just wanted to let him know that "Jazz Bass" is a brand and not a type. Even if most people would call a two single coil pickup bass a "Jazz", the manufacturers are not allowed to use that name.
Agreed. And a lot of the manufacturers write "Jazz-Style Bass", so it's pretty easy that the "Style" is lost. The Jazz Bass IS Fender and no-one else.
While in high school - I was an aspiring musician. I saw Marcus play and I immediately retired. At 14 he was the man!!!! I knew after hearing and seeing him play I would never in my wildest dreams be this good. I was surrounded by greatness Marcus Miller, Steve Jordan, Kurtis Blow, Ray Chew and I know I've left a couple of people out - but we were all at M&A the same time! Now my son is as focused as saw Marcus was at an early age! Thanks! I played ball better than all of them! LMAO!
Are you fucking crazy giving up because someone has practiced more than you. Do you really think the world could continually progress if all people thought like you. WTF
I made the right choice because I did not have the same passion for music that I had for numbers or basketball. Numbers were always my first love. I just happened to play french horn and there weren't too many french horn players around.
Not at all - I kick ass with numbers like he does on the bass. I make big money decisions every day. Why be one of - when you can be the best at what you love?

Why do people always think of music as a competition?? It is not... Of course Marcus has the bigger name, but both are incredibly talented and skilled. I love Tal, she's gonna be one of the top fusion bassplayers of her generation.
To all of you that have dissed on Tal Wilkenfield:
NOW for the way *I* see it. All of you that think you could hang with this girl for 2 seconds, stand up. Yeah that's what I thought...NONE OF YA! So go grab a beer, smoke some herb, kick back, and fantasize about being *anywhere near* the talent level she has achieved, because that's as close as you're ever going to get. You wanna be haters? That's all fine and good. Just be prepared to get hated on! Think twice about it next time!
And who has never experienced the difficulty to play on a booth at NAMM, plus jammin' with a reknown artist on the very same instrument, should better keep his mouth shut.
Marcus is good-he was plaing w/ Davis...and SO WHAT???- next jam she will be better..don´t try to compare musicians -it is just a wasting of your time :)
i wont deny shes a good player but shes not the next great bass player of our time. i know plenty of people as good or better that wont get any fame at all. plus is it just me or does she seem a bit unoriginal? now marcus miller thats a different story... hes a BEAST
Its amazing how people love to trash on talent.Tal is amazing, and I feel bad for people that can't be happy for her success. You don't have to like her music to see how incredibly talented she is. And while everything is open to opinion, I think I will take the opinion of Jeff Beck and Marcus Miller who clearly seem to enjoy jamming with her,so to all her supporters,I join you in saying TAL IS AMAZING! And to all you haters, continue wasting time online bashing people, see where that gets you
she plays every time same solo same tricks. down to up and slide. ok she has a tecnique and timing. yeh ok football players has a tecnique and timing but this is music don't forget
Don't be jealous. She should inspire you to become a better player. She has great tone, technique, and can bass walk. Also she has backed many great musicians. And here she uses de same riff when not soloing, to back Marcus Miller. It can't get better than that.
For those trying to compare their talents - When Marcus was Tal's age he didn't have her present resume (Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, Allman Brothers, etc), nor I'm sure the chops she's already flaunting. When she's almost 50 (like Marcus), lets see how she compares to the way he sounds here. I'm of the opinion that she'll be wiping he floor with what he demonstrates here. She's only been playing bass for 5 years! He's old enough to be her grandfather (49 vs. 22)!
Like I said, she's only been playing bass for 5 years. Miller had already gone to both Music & Arts HS and Queens College (for music). She's basically self taught. Both of them were/are prodigies, and to compare them NOW is ridiculous. Lets see what she becomes at his present level of experience - THEN compare. All I know is that she's already better than most. Also, you have to give her more props for doing this TODAY, when 99.9% of her peers listen to junk. Its like Jaco had a Aussie daughter.
i agree she has a lot of time ahead of her and will get way better but, you can't really say she will wipe the floor with what marcus is doing. it's all about the feel and marcus's is probably almost as gd as feel gets
Well, at 22, she's only 10 years removed from 12 (and only half of those 10 years were devoted to learning to play the bass). Marcus is 27 years older than her (more than double her days on earth).
hes just showing her that shes got a long way to go..

I do not believe Sadowsky pays artists to play their basses. Every artist that I know that plays Sadowskys pay Roger Sadowsky for his basses.

2:16....I hate that closing announcement. It's always a sad time to leave the NAMM show :(
Marcus is legendary.
Tal is inspirational...girl power!
namara87 3 years ago
Why do people always think of music as a competition?? It is not... Of course Marcus has the bigger name, but both are incredibly talented and skilled. I love Tal, she's gonna be one of the top fusion bassplayers of her generation.

while were sitting her watching it..shes out there rocking out having a good time and doing it well..so guess who has the talent?

She's very talented.

Marcus is good-he was plaing w/ Davis...and SO WHAT???- next jam she will be better..don´t try to compare musicians -it is just a wasting of your time :)

And to all you haters, continue wasting time online bashing people, see where that gets you

she plays every time same solo same tricks. down to up and slide. ok she has a tecnique and timing. yeh ok football players has a tecnique and timing but this is music don't forget
jacoppo 3 years ago

Marcus Miller was playing with (and composing for) Miles Davis at Tal's age...
CamundongoLeo 3 years ago
Like I said, she's only been playing bass for 5 years. Miller had already gone to both Music & Arts HS and Queens College (for music). She's basically self taught. Both of them were/are prodigies, and to compare them NOW is ridiculous. Lets see what she becomes at his present level of experience - THEN compare. All I know is that she's already better than most. Also, you have to give her more props for doing this TODAY, when 99.9% of her peers listen to junk. Its like Jaco had a Aussie daughter.
purpledynasty 3 years ago 2
i agree she has a lot of time ahead of her and will get way better but, you can't really say she will wipe the floor with what marcus is doing. it's all about the feel and marcus's is probably almost as gd as feel gets
vewsong 3 years ago
she looks like a 12 year old...
scoutcheie16 3 years ago
Well, at 22, she's only 10 years removed from 12 (and only half of those 10 years were devoted to learning to play the bass). Marcus is 27 years older than her (more than double her days on earth).
