I have followed since in started about a year and a half ago. I could not agree more, I started with dreamweaver and I think that got me on the wrong start. I was able to do all of these things and did not know the "why" part of it and I took a lot of steps backwards in figuring out what everything means. Good on you good job!!!:)
thanx a lot fr this very helpful tips...i m a beginner and learning web design fr the past 2 to 3 months and I had this same feeling of getting lost initially...the only solution is to STRICTLY learn one at a time and ignore any other distraction...i m trying to learn css fr the time and I try my best to focus only on css...
Thanks Mike, that is exactly what i have done. Signed up to lynda.com and am overwhelmed by what is out there to learn. I agree with just leaning what you need for a project and move on one step at the time. Thanks, regards/
Hello Mike. I'm sure you've been asked this question a lot but, what's a good recommendation for an alternative for Adobe Dreamweaver for MAC users. I just really find DW to be so complex. Thanks in advance.
As a guy trying to learn web design, etc. it is terribly overwhelming thinking that you need to learn all the stuff at once. I agree with you in the fact that HTML, CSS and Photoshop are the keys. Someone could have a nice web design business just using these tools I think, however a bit of jQuery is awesome!
Thanks Mike. I always like your straight shooter style. Keep em coming!
Doesn't learning something new only when a client needs it place too much pressure on yourself . Especially to meet their requirements within a time period expected by them, which is usually very short?
nice, i think the 3 main things to learn first of all is just Html, css and photoshop. this will enable you to create many simple but professional sites
As a student hoping to study web design/development at university, I worry quite a lot about the future. I wonder how on earth I'll ever learn enough to be a successful developer, to keep ahead of the competition. I feel much better now. You've made some good points. "Baby steps", I like it! Thanks very much Mike!
@leemoody93 Yeah, lot of people have the same issue, not knowing what to learn...looking into the future. But if you put your head down and just learn like one thing at a time, you'll know so much in a year. Even if it took you 2 months to learn one tool. By the end of the year, you'll know 6 tools. Once you know a couple things, a lot of it is just repeating itself. Block everything out, just focus on one thing at a time (baby steps) ;)
Great advice, thanks :)
