Whoa, memories! Saw them at Hammersmith Odeon late 80's and they were brilliant. Only have this on vinyl now and had forgotten how great it is - this and Hurry on Sundown are my fave Hawkwind tracks.
The needlegun was used by Jerry Cornelius (one of the trippiest characters in print set in the 60's) was one of the eternal champions, so why have they chosen Elric to represent him?
well the video was taken during the live chronicles tour chronicle of the black sword being about elric another incarnation of the eternal champion close enough
Tackling fantasy fiction as part of a rock stage show will never be cool to most people. But when I was a kid reading the the Eternal Champion saga, Hawkwind music really brought out the cosmic side of those tales. When you're off on a head-trip the last thing you worry about is whether or not this is cool.
Pretentious? These blokes aren't pretending. Check their history. Mr. Rotten is a great admirer and the Pistols in recent times covered the Hawks, Silver Machine. U may remember that Rotten was quick to condemn pretension. He never felt that Hawkwind had tabs on themselves. Performance does not always equate to pretension.
Getting someone to dress up as Elric and wave a sword around is, in my opinion, more smacks of pretence. I'm not crticising their abilities as musicians or lyricists just their stage show. Mind you, the era was rather well supplied with overblown stage acts if I recall correctly . . .
They might have been "overblown stage acts" but dont forget that hawkwind have always been showmen, and as such they put on a show of audio and visual stimulation. And as Michael moorcock wrote many of the lyics for chonicles of the blacksword and was on the tour as narrator, It was a fantastic audio/visual experience to be there.
Dont mean to be rude or anything, but have you actually seen Hawkwind live?
Def my fav live song from the Live Chronicles record. Liking the Langdon songs for a change of vocals as well. Superb.

Drunken nerdiness, the needle gun was jerry cornelius, not elric, but what the heck its a big multiverse. Still reread Moorcock after all these years
