Because radio stations always received "advance copies" of any song that were supposed to be potential hits, 'visor'. Sometimes, the "promo" copy was different from the one issued to the general public {as in the seven missing piccolo notes in the "official" release}. At the time, virtually all D.J. copies were issued in MONO.
@visor109 Many stations NEEDED a mono source, so if you only put out a stereo LP, they HAD to have special promo 45s made in mono. Otherwise when they played songs with wide separation you'd only hear half the instruments!!!
Unless of course they were to pay around 79c at Radio Shack for a little stereo-to-mono converting cable. But that would mean they spent more for ONE little plug than the price of TWO 45s back then, so it would hardly be worth the expenditure, right? -- 1b2s
Thanx, jimbar, for postin' this version with David Mason's 7 piccolo trumpet notes at the end. That's really the only version that matters, right, gang? God bless!
A similar memory only from WLS-AM in Chicago. This central Illinois native listened to it on a hand sized transistor radio and taped the ending with Dex Card announcing back in `66. Ah, those were the days.............(3" reel to reel tape with a hand held microphone, very high tech!)
YES!!!! Blessed relief! Very few people believe me when I say that extra horn riff exists at the end. WABC-AM in NYC ONLY played this version during the song's entire reign, and to this day, I always hear it this way. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I could KISS YOU!
Is that the actual record playing? I know it's been 41 years but I always remember the promo version have the horn ending without the feedback. I may be wrong.

Why did they pull the horn riff at the end off? Kind of like putting a beard on the Mona Lisa.

WAYNE1980AA 3 years ago 3
It's in mono, as were all their singles prior to 1969.
Actually, "Penny Lane" wasn't released in stereo in the US until 1980, when it was included on the Rarities LP.
