The first time I heard "Tom´s Diner" was in 1985, when Suzanne Vega toured Germany to promote her first album. "Tom´s Diner" was not released yet - it was released in 1987 - and not known to the audience. She began the concert with this song - a capella. When people started clapping the rythm, (she did NOT encourage them to do so) the took a step back from the microphone to make them stop - without interrupting her singing of course.
