Its strange, I always had a strong connection with the Greek culture and In my Greek ny nationality or blood, then again if we came from the Roman Empire we all have Greek in us ;)
@illyrianLule haha - it was the albanians who sides with the nazis you idiot. google "SS Skanderbeg".....or like "Kosova" where all ethnic minorities have been kicked out. now you can kill each other.....which you are already doing.
@illyrianLule - racists and bigots dont open their country to you so that you can feed your starving family, nor do they help your homeland with foreign aid.
@Aegialeus - I troubled over that one too Aegialeus. With so much negativity for religion it is very easy to get clouded on this subject. But when I sat down and thought about the fundamental core of every living thing represented by the 12 Gods of the ancient Greeks i knew that for them the Gods were representative of the forces of nature. They were not omnipotent nor infallible. It is not only Greek wisdom we must return to but also Greek thought and Greed education. This is only a start
If I were to believe in theism...I would embrace the Olympian gods they are more holistic and colorful xexexe
But I'm more of the school of Atomism from Leukippos/Democritus and the Epicurean school of thought. Least we forget the other ancients contributors humanities progress.
@Aegialeus - a very interesting discussion my friend. I agree that atomism plays an integral role in our understanding of the universe but it does not explain why atoms oscillate about each other in a positive-negative vibratory movement. In death atoms remain but vibrations cease. The only true theism then can only be dontknowtheism :P
Carl Sagan said it best “Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep thoughts can be winnowed from deep nonsense.”
Regarding what makes atoms oscillate, we don't know for know...possibly!? As humans once was not sure about what was beyond the forest, grass lands, dessert. mountains, oceans. Also, for many who haven't even seen an atom, or understand what atoms are....appear "flat"!
Carl Sagan was an Atheist. Our immortality and after life is our atomic state that will continue and travel the expanse of the universe(s). I find refuge in this, and am content & not concerned about afterlife myths.
@Aegialeus - I could not put my trust in humanity because humanity can be easily manipulated. The laws of nature are a much safer bet to base my values on....
But that is all we have, is each other...and if that can be realized by all than a new enlightenment and revolution will come to fruition.
And yes i agree humanity is frail and can be mislead by the unscrupulous arrogant that disregard and not account for the other person, and the power hungry and greedy are a problem and a barrier to humanities progress....but can be overcome.
@rempetisa "laws of nature are a much safer bet to base my values on"
nature is incredibly cruel. so does that mean u dont value african babies? or people who live on the coast of japan? or the worth of human beings in general?
i think basing ur values on nature is sadistic.
i base my values on a person's ability to pursue happiness since that's the only thing that matters. and nature is one of my primary enemies.
@kajmobile - Happiness isn't a value it's an ideal. Nature both environmental and human exists regardless of how sadistic you may think it is. Basing a value system by philosophically reasoning the laws of nature both environmental and human suggest responsibility toward one's existence and seeks excellence in one's achievement.
Philosophical reasoning was “invented” by the great jabootenese philosopher Moogbdaby -
@rempetisa There is no one in this room but us accidents. :-)
There are no laws in nature except for the internal mechanisms of the cosmos (physics, etc). We obey those by default. Apart from them, we are on our own...
Well I believe this IS the best part of all! :) By trusting god you are bound to follow everything else. It is the essense of the trust that transforms you into a being full of love. It's not a matter of religion. It;s a matter of acceptance of vantiy of things and then loving god. And by loving god we'll meet him. It's not the other way around :) I wish you happiness.
Belief is very powerful and can drive people to great tasks and deplorable tasks.
If there is a god then he/she/it has to introduce him/her/it self to me, and then if he/she/it can prove it self to be a such an entity then I will think about if it is worthy of my love. Many believers say, that god is all knowing and all powerful, omnipotent that transcends time...if such nonsense is true my lifetime compared to gods supposed existence is so small it is infinitely unmeasurable.
Can god not spare a moment for me & everyone on the planet to set things right from all the suffering, plagues, sicknesses, greed, killing, destruction, cruelty that many humans do to each other, & to our symbiotic species, & the planet as a whole, etc.? There is no such god belief in my mind. I love, I love my family, my relatives, my friends, other species, the planet I live on, humanity in general, my existence, my life.
Wish you a long healthy life, full of happiness & love.
@Aegialeus Don't get the Hellenic concept of the Gods or God mixed up with the Abrahamic concept of God. The Hellenes were a polytheistic race that believed the Gods to be the same as the laws of nature. Their Gods taught them what they know, not through some book or scripture but through watching and experiencing the divinity of nature. Their rituals and religion was their way of showing respect and love for the Gods and nature :)
The Abrahamic god is an evolved notion from one eastern polytheistic god. We can certainly deduce that people regarded great leaders as gods, as we have proof from Egyptians, Persians, and Babylonians to support this. And later with Alexander playing with the notion but lucky for him his companions were always near to keep him human and grounded.
All Hellenes were not polytheistic, especially some of the great thinkers. An evolution of thinking did partake before the old gods were discarded for the new Olympian gods, and even during this Olympian pantheon another transition was taking form before, during, and after the golden age to make sense of the events that took place in their world. Knowledge through observation is what made them what they are, but they were stumped by monotheism and its version of a Gordian knot.
I am glad I watched this video, because sometimes I need to be reminded of these values that can make me a better and successful person.

For me it was an excellent video, except for the part @3:57 where it said "Trust in God" I would prefer "Trust in Humanity".
For me trusting in a concept that is non existent is troublesome.
To be Greek is to challenge everything, not being gullible and naive...leave no stone unturned.
