I have used a Honda Eu 2000 to run a small travel trailer with a small 3000 btu window air conditioner instead of the roof air. Burns about 3 gallons a day. Two parallel Eu2000 generators will run all appliances and the roof air using 5 gallons of gas a day in the hottest temperatures.
The smaller the gauge the bigger ( and better ) the extension cord. 8 gauge is what plugs into your dryer. It's thicker and will lose less amps over distance. 10 gauge is slightly smaller, 12 gauge smaller, 14 gauge etc etc. Most people have 16 gauge extension cords in their home. Plug that into your generator and you'll burn your house down.
Just keep everything 12 gauge off the gen and to appliances, and you'll be fine.
Go to lowes or 'wherever' and either buy or make your own. Depending on how far away you put your generator...if not using an extenda panel...at least two 10 gauge running into the house. From there, in the house, use no less than 12 gauge to appliances. And NEVER run less than 12 gauge to a window AC.
A good rule of thumb:
When running off of generators...NEVER LESS THAN 12 GAUGE extension cords.
I live in an aparmtnet and off the 1st floor so I do not have much room and a large over hang on the balcony. What can be suggested to use in that kind of situation? I am not sure on generator rules here, but I know you can not cook with a grill. Of course in a dire situation i doubt it much matters unless it is extremely dangerous to me or others. Any that does not give off such bad chemicals?
as someone mentioned earlier a 2 stroke aircooled generator would make so much noise in a survival situation that it would attract unwanted attention. I'd like to see a vid on some queiter alternatives ( solar) for shtf scenarios.
Great video!!! Thank God it's not another fanny pack review. I am so tired of the reviews on all the bags. Please do us all a favor and make no more bag reviews. Give us information we can use that is relevant for survival, emergency prep.
yes I agree with this comment in survival if you are a lone it isone thing but to be a family man you have to think of large generators and making improvments to the house to with stand a CAT-5 storm
Yeah but how much Gasoline are you going to store? I like a solar back up system better. Infact I already own a small 80 watt system and am powering my bedroom as we speak with it. Also the sound on a gas system will give you away and every one will know your ready and must have food and supplies . Id rather not attract attention in a SHTF
We are getting one ASAP it is the next thing on the list. Ive got the seeds and food supplies already, the gardens are doing well. After the Generator gets here were going to construct a fall back camp.
KEVIN Thankyou again for the info but foor me I still rent and the power at be wants everyone to leave OUR dense housing and per-fab ( trailer park) areas to go to empty farm land area west of our location and set up FEMA tents and then FEMA trailers MOST ARE RENTERS THE OWNERS WILL BE KEPT IN TOUCH FROM POLICE THE RENTERS May not be able to return for a long time
We just sold our home to get debt-free and are now renting (for less than half of what our mortgage was). Another reason we sold was to free up cash to buy such supplies, including an RV and a spot of land. The RV fridge, stove, furnace and A/C run off propane (large tank off-vehicle and small tank on-vehicle). A generator will have to be propane, since we can bury and otherwise protect propane tanks, but liquid fuel does not keep without management.
it is odd that the rent is cheaper then a mortgage payment in your area
in central florida the worst place to really have a disaster if you north most people willbe in trouble and going south Is totally Insane If you are not going to a large ship that you own most roads now get block with normal traffic in some Storms that we have had the last five yrs has prove that to being just out side of a Small town with five to ten acreas north of Orlando is the only way but away from i-75 and i-95
hwy 17 rocks for evacuation in that part of florida florida i've stayed and left for hurricanes if you leave just do it a few days early or at the last min hurricanes move like 5 miles per hour and their is no traffic at like 200 am if i have to leave again im waiting for the outer bands to hit the coast!!! just be sure and get gas anytime the weatherman mentions tropical anything !!!!
no from June 01 to Dec 01 you most keep your gas tanks at half or better my poor son always have no gas in the car he say it is too much weight but carry enough money ($50) For one tank full of gas in a water proof container in the truck plus a few other things
if you have going to interview someone, sit down first and go over the interview without filming this gets them comfortable and they know what is to be covered. then film. have the individual showing something or at least moving through his work place. standing in a corner like that, it's like you cornered him
The funny thing is as soon as I bought and hooked it up the power went out for 3 days after and I was sitting and home nice and warm because it was snowing outside.. everywere else had no lights..
I recently bought a large generator for my grand mother's life support system in case the power goes off. I am not sure of the brand....its Chinese but the door to door salesman said it works great.
This is emergenct equipment I would want to power frige freezer 110 ac for one room and 2 or 3 fans. If you needed any more personal cooling you could take blocks of ice out the freezer have the fan blow over it use some ice bags too these are not too expensive but you place that on your head you are cooled. Spray bottle with ice in it if you have fans you are well off. Why don't we all have solar water heaters? In the southe we might have freeze 2 times a year a simple sysem DIY would work.
Generac's are cool!!! In my area they hook them up to natural gas lines and they run seamless when the power goes out, no filling with fuel or checking for low oil. Cost is something like $10K and up. I just keep a little air cooled 6500KW handy for the fridge and some lights.

I learned a valuable lesson the first time I had to use my generator in an outage.
HAVING THE RIGHT CORDS AND CONNECTIONS !!
No less than 12 gauge will do and 10 gauge, even better, but never, EVER, less than 12 gauge.
Say it together: NO LESS THAN 12 GAUGE.
If you don't, you're extension cords will heat up AND, you lose power and won't be able to run what you want.
NO LESS THAN 12 GAUGE.
I suggest using what is called an extenda panel to run to the house.
