  • iv'e always wondered, can it play attach a 32X? =)

  • @Kennyrules101 I've never tried but seems like I read somewhere it won't work in this but I could be mistaken.

  • @Kennyrules101 its built into the system

  • @odeball22 really? that's awesome but wasn't it made before the 32x came out?

  • @Kennyrules101 yes it does, even though they say not to do it on the 32x manual, it works fine

  • You sound like a hillbilly.

  • I used to have one of those. It was my first ever CD player...throwing Sonic 3 in it and playing was just icing on the cake. Playing my favorite games with headphones on...that was the life...

  • FInally! I got it on ebay. Very compact.

  • Very compact size. I'm lovin it.

  • lol, you're awesome! and that looks exactly like my alarm clock.. :P

  • Thanks. Sounds like you have a cool alarm clock :D

  • @matt78tv How much could it sell for...?

  • this must be one of the most rare products, as i have never saw one in my country. i guess if someone wanted one, he/she had to import it. but if i'm not mistaken, this is a megadrive/megacd in one small package ? it looks cool, even now it's around 10 years old.

  • I had one of these ! In fact Mine had production number 0301 if I remember right. But for a good one that works you can get a lot of money. I wish I still had mine :(

  • i have a friend from ca sending me one right now for free i am so pumped. i have a sega as a kid but never the sega cd or cdx

  • So did you ever get it

  • yes i love the lil thing although it feels weird playing it since i am used to the big ol sega system, its on my desk right now. arrived fine the display is a lil broke like one or 2 letters don't show up. its a great lil system. i have sonic 2 3 knuckles, taz escape from mars, pitfall and then i have the nhl game that came with the system, all i need is sonic 1, zombies ate my neighbors, toe jam and earl, earth worm jim and mortal combat, i got the last 2 for snes thoe

  • Dam matt me and you were like 14 when this thing was made!!!Dam I feel old now :)

  • good review and.... lol u sound like Bush its not an insult but u kinda do!

  • one of the best-looking video game systems ever imho

  • @uberd0gAlpha : yeah, sometimes sega comes up with superb designs. the dreamcast is also one of my favorites, and not only by design :-D

i wish this got sold at the netherlands as well, but here it's not so common. only collectors might have one of these.

  • hehe remember me my old portable cd player :D

  • I had a chance to buy one new in 1995 at a place called Saturday Matinee, but back then they were like 300 bucks I believe and way out of my price range esspecially when the Playstation was just around the corner and making all the headlines.

  • I used to have one of those, but I sold it on ebay.. I wish I didn't, I miss it :(

  • The CDX failed horribly because when it released it cost more than the Genesis and the Sega CD combined. It was a awesome system just bad decisions killed it.

  • Yeah it was like $400! Ouch..

  • redneck lol XD

  • where'd you get the Super Mario Brothers Toy Box?

  • Ebay.

  • Those are soo awesome. I'm still amazed to this day they fit the Genesis and SegaCD into that thing!

  • tip, if you want to play annywhere? you could buy a porteble screen and connect your cdx to it for playing annywhere!!!!!!

  • what kind of screen would you need

  • There are only very few Sega CD and Genesis games that won't play on the CDX. And it seems none of those games are games most people want to play anyway.

  • any one who wants to buy my sega cdx system pls contact me

  • i do how much

  • I read about this unit in 2001, what an awesome unit. How long would the unit last on batteries? How many batteries does it take? I've never owned a MegaDrive, but I'd love to get a hold of one of these, that's if their is a PAL version of the unit, as I don't live in the US, I live in Australia.

  • The unit takes 2 AA cells, but that only powers the CD player for use as a portable CD player. It does not provide power to anything else.

I don't know about the battery life, but it's likely to be around 4-6 hours, give or take a couple.

  • i got one off ebay in great shape, works really well

  • How do you get it to play a Genesis game our a CD game if they're always hooked up?

Is there a menu where you can select to play a Genesis or CD game if there's one of each inserted.

  • If a Genesis cartridge is inserted, the machine will always default to playing that cartridge when you turn the machine on. If you turn the CD-X on without a Genesis cartridge inserted, the machine will boot up the Sega CD BIOS.

The only exception to this is when you use the Sega CD RAM expansion cartridge, but that's because this cart is not a game and was designed to provide more save game RAM for Sega CD games.

  • Thank you for responding that was a big help.

I don't know why I got a thumbs down for asking, oh well?

It turns out that I just got a Sega CD model 2 instead.

I tried it with my model 1 Genesis and it worked just perfectly.

  • That thing is awesome, to bad it cost to much, otherwise I would have one, I do however have a Sega Nomad that I got in 1998.

  • Man the 32x adapter works on this?

  • Yes.

In fact, Sega did plan a kit that would allow you to use the 32X with the CD-X, but it was scrapped when the FCC had problems with that.

The CD-X and 32X combo would have 2 Motorola 68000 CPUs, 2 Hitachi SH-2 CPUs, 1 Zilog Z80 CPU, one Yamaha YM-2612 for the FM sound synthesis, and many various custom Sega chipsets for sound and graphics. And, all of this in a very small space.

  • o'ride, thanx, thats cool

  • I remember seeing this advertised as a kid. I wanted one but naturally my parents would buy one for me "you already have one!" they would say but they meant the genesis itself.

It's all well and good, but does it work good?

  • Wow, I never realized how small that thing was, especially if you compare it to the genesis + the sega cd.

  • Very cool! I've never seen one of those. Good find Bro!

  • do you use the genesis controllers

  • Yeah

  • i LOVED this system. it is SO SMALL and you can play both genny games as well as arcade hits like final fight and snatcher on the CDX

  • If only Sega got the price right, this system would have sold by the truck load.

  • is it possible to hookup the 32x to it?

  • I'm sure it will because it should go in the genesis slot with no problems although I've never tried my 32x on it.

  • I heard you can hook a 32x up to it but the 32x can possibly damange the system.

  • yes

  • it says in wikipedia it does work, although the manual says not to because then you can't open the cd cover and might cause stress on the actual system and eventualy break it.

  • sweet

  • 8-9 years ago? that would be like 2000-1999 right?

  • Yeah, that was when I bought it. Used at the flea market. It was just sitting in a box on the ground and I paid like $6 for it with all the hookups and controller.

  • you have alot of neat things

  • Wow, for being 90s, that sure looks like it was expensive at the time

  • yeah it was... like $400 expensive, and that was QUITE expensive for 1994. I bought one new -_- but man did I love it :P

  • $500 in Chicago

  • I'll sell you my cdx for less.

  • how much less?

  • If you really want this cdx I could make a video of all the things I have for the system and you can tell me for how much you could buy it, if you want. what do you say?

firt of all where do you live? thanks

  • To anyone who wants a CD-X, this thing is really only valuable to collectors who may end up never using it.

These things are difficult to service if they break, and it's broken if the rechargeable battery for the game save RAM fails to hold a charge or if the CD drive ever stops reading discs (Sanyo part no. SF-92-5-16P is the traverse assembly, including the laser optical pickup, that is used for the CD-X CD drive).

And, the CD-X is not compatible with all Sega CD and Genesis games.

  • Hey there I have a question about the ram built in the cdx. I just got mine a week ago at a thriftstore for mad cheap hehe. Anyways, is there a way to erase the saved game files? Any way to manage them?

  • You'll need a Sega CD game. Access to the memory manager isn't possible without a game in the drive.

With the Sega CD on and a game disc in, press the A, B, or C button on the controller when the screen says "PRESS THE START BUTTON."

You'll be taken to the CD player menu. Move the cursor over the button labeled MEMORY, located above the playback controls.

I recommend formatting the RAM and leaving the CDX on for about 2-3 hours to recharge the internal save game RAM battery.

  • Waaa the internal battery needs to recharge? I don't understand....it's so hard to find info on the CDX man I tried google and not even youtube has many videos of it. Thank you for the help in advance.

  • All Sega CDs, including the CD-X, JVC X'Eye, and possibly even the Pioneer PAC-S10 Sega expansion module for the CLD-A100 LaserActive, use an internal rechargeable battery to sustain the backup RAM.

Periodic recharging by leaving the system on for a couple of hours is recommended if the system is not used often.

    You're welcome.

  • Oh man thanks a lot for the info. I checked the memory ram thing and there were some games recorded in it. I gotta go out in an hour so I won't be able to format and leave it on for the hours it needs but I'll try it out when I get back home. Anyways, I just uploaded a video of the cdx doing a test run of cliffhanger. You can check it out if you want.

  • If your interest is playing the games, get a 1st gen Genesis and front-load Sega CD unit instead.

They're cheaper, offer superior compatibility with all games, are relatively easier to fix, and the optical pickup is commonly available from JVC or Sony (KSS-213 series).

This advice is coming from a person who fixes and restores vintage game systems as a hobby.

I am also an owner of a CD-X as well as a front load Sega CD, two top loaders, and the X'eye.

  • Watcher3223, have you ever found replacement drives for the CDX. If so, could you tell me where I could get one?

  • No.

There are parts websites that might have replacements, though.

  • I need to revise a quote I made.

I had indicated that the first generation Sega CD with the Sony drive uses a KSS-213 optical pickup.

This is incorrect: first generation Sega CD units with the Sony drive uses the KSS-240A pickup.

  • And, unless the CD-X is brand new and still sealed in the box, it's not worth $500.

At most, a good-working and good-looking example that includes the A/V cables, original power supply, and a genuine Sega six button controller would be worth $200 or less.
