The movie messed up cause it tried to keep the same story as the show but completely changed the character of the phantom. Also Raul's role was reduced to basically a side character so yes, it makes no sense at all when she chooses him but that's the movie's fault.

@BooBop1987 Yes, it is in the book.  It happens after the events shown in the movie, after Christine announces her engagement to Raoul but before the wedding. The child she gives birth to is actually the Phantom's. I highly recommend reading the book.

I find it difficult to believe that Rossum's parents would have allowed her to film a sex scene as she was only 16 years old when the movie began filming. They might in the book and in other film adaptations, but I don't think it happened in this one.

Well, in the book, he's basically an animated corpse. With a torture room in his house. Who also kills multiple people, has a severe personality/mental problem, and is just dang crazy. Also, he's not ripped, and he smells like death.
