I can understand slavery, it isn't right, but I can understand it. What I can' understand is the brutality with witch they were treated. Locking people in a laying down position on a plank of wood, laying in their shit, piss and vomit and then throwing salt water on them to clean them? Did this really happen? I can't imagine how anyone can do this and remain sane. If I were a sailor (free man) on that boat, I would have lost my mind of been drunk the entire time.
@christo930 kind stranger they did a lot worse things than what happened on the ships. The thumb screw is an example. I've read how they shoved the branding irons up womens vaginas and men's anus. I'm a history major so I've looked at slavery in America as well as the Caribbean. Most slaves actually went to the Caribbean, and in comparison the Caribbean slaves had it FAR worse because their white masters were heavily outnumbered ad needed to instill fear in them
@TwiinStar1224 I am just glad I wasn't born into that world or that time period either as a slave, master or just a human marginally attached to either state of affairs (master or slave). The kind of effects that this brutal world must of had on people is unfathomable. What is going to happen when the fossil fuels run out? Fossil fuels are what ended slavery, it's going to come back when they run out if we haven't figured out a new source of energy by then.
I wonder what the first man in the world thought when someone said "Hey, you have to cut off your foreskin"? Personally, if I had had any choice in the matter, I would have kept mine.
@marlon5970 Haha actually this movie is pretty sad how people were treated this way (so it didnt give me a hard on bitch), it kind of reminds me of how u should be treated (like a piece of shit)! If u dont like this movie then why the fuck did you click on the vid dumbass
@Reboothis they speak english so we can understand. Imagine the difficulty of writing a script where they speak an authentic african language, having american actors learn it, only so that viewers would not understand it and need subtitles.
@marlon5970 surely if you had any understanding of this then you'd see its not saying what goes on in it is good, its saying its bad just by showing the reality, if you dont understand that then you wont understand many films
awesome movie ,showing how far African-Americans have come, but it bothers me when ppl get mad at ALL Caucasian ppl bc of historic movies like this.... It isn't all their fault this happened! I'm half African American and half Hispanic & my fiancé is Caucasian,he'd never seen this movie until yesterday & he loves it!! It's his new favorite! But I think we need to make sure everyone is informed of where our ancestors have been,to know where we are going!! God Bless!
People are all forgetting that this was not all about OJ SIMPSON running around .. this is about the story of one family's rise from slavery to freedom...who didnt remember the first time they saw kunte get captured or whipped into submission , or get his foot cut off . the ripping of his only child from him .broke my heart then and still tugs at it now...what a story, and now if they could see where we have finally come from slavery to seeing the first black president.
They mention a Stan Margulies as one of the producers in the opening credits. Is he related in any way to Julianna Margulies of "ER" and now "The Good Wife"?
Fonda: you saw my father...he is a great man.
Yay for OJ Simpson...man if oj was back then he would have taken out about 50 of those guys and ran into the woods.

They spoke English in Africa?

@Reboothis Only to their point of view. Latter on Kunta speaks his native tongue. But in their own perspective, the language is English
