I find it interesting that the second part of this quote is so often unmentioned. Perhaps it is because of how interventionist our country has become.
Fantastic speech love JFK .my is Kennedy so I called my son jack after him ,agreat president I wish we had him and Robert today the world would be a better place
Democrats - Where did ya'll go wrong? It's hard to believe that 50 years later we have a president who believes the complete opposite of what JFK did and calls himself a democrat. It seems Obama's message is more like "Ask not what you can do for your country, but what can your country do for you" - Lets get back on Track Ron Paul 2012!
Sir, He is not a homophobic. In fact, Ron Paul does not want the Government to be involved with any kind of marriage and to state if it is legal or illegal. He believes it is a religious ceremony and that Governments should give civil unions to whoever wants them. He is not a racist. Those remarks made in his newsletter were written by two losers and Ron Paul knew nothing of it. He believe abortion should be illegal because it is a living thing and that it deserves the same rights as an american
@ravensgangsta He allowed those newsletters to be published under his name, which either makes him racist, because he clearly endorsed the content, or an idiot for allowing his name to be attached to something he did not read. Or how about his comments regarding MLK, or his votes against MLK day. How about his crusade against the Civil Rights Act that protects minorities. The list goes on and on. This man is an absolute joke, and I cannot fathom why he has such a devoted following
Hm...what can I do for my country...Well, I think our politics as of recently aren't in good shape. In fact, I haven't heard anything good about anyone in politics in nearly my whole life! That's a real shame! I'm gonna run for president someday. Be the one good politician, the guy who sets this great nation straight. Hm...what should I do if I became president?
Any real good presidents will never make it,you have to be groomed or moulded in the shape of your masters to do precisely what they tell you to do and if you don't tow the line well.........JFK,it speaks for itself.
India has more Honor students then America has students... I can hire a PHD today for $500.00 a month, that is what you face. So spending $140,000 on a harvard education for a Phd is a bit silly don't you think? I start reaping that value today and I am not strapped with any student loans, not only that but the PHD individual is very appreciative to have a job. When America faces the fact that... we have created the most poisoness soil for the small businessman, mainly the IRS.
what do you call those types of sentences that kinda can be written the same forward and backward... like this is an example "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". NOT sentences like this with the EXACT letter for letter like "a nut for a jar of tuna"
I wish Democrats nowadays would think like this instead of handing out billions of dollars in food stamps and bailouts to people who for the most part are just to lazy to work or to not want to serve their country
If all Americans took these words to heart this country would be in way better shape then it is now..all everyone cares about is what they can get out of something and dnt realize we all need to give in order to receive. I believe only the military really understands this anymore which.( Im not a military fanatic either its just my point of view)
it's amazing how democrats have changed.. now it's like "i'll give this, this and this if you vote democrats" Democrats are more considered with giving people entitlements to get votes and power than they are the freedom of man.
The Presidential line in any speech. And this is a Republican talking about a Democrat. RIP President Kennedy, you are truly missed. And I wasn't even around when he was President.
Kennedy was close, but still wrong. He should have said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, and ask not what you can do for your country. We must ask instead, what CANNOT be done when you and your country work TOGETHER!" This is the hope of Party Recon. For more information, visit partyrecon . org
50 years ago a man stood up and was the leader of our country, the man that helped us. 50 years ago JFK gave this speech. I wish I was alive to witness this.
50 years ago he said that we should ask what we can do for our country.
We asked what we can do, and we did what we can. What did we get in return?
We simply got stripped of our rights. We lost our freedom. We didn't get shit.
America is a hollow country that isn't what they used to be. This country is America, by name only. We fought for freedom, we helped our country, we elect the polititians into office. And for what?
Because the government's a piece of shit. Trust me, that if all the people in the government had been or were men like JFK was, The USA would be a perfect country and place to live in.
What many people on welfare think" Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you. We need to go back to the old days, where people asked what they can do for their country.
It's a circle. What you do for your country, you get from your country aside from the fact that we're in a recession. So now what you do for your country is actually true but you aren't rewarded.
@thug2ryde you're the kind of punkass that makes this country worse. It's always about you. The government was created by the people, to protect ALL the people. Know why? Because SOME selfish people would rather watch other folks starve than lift a hand to help. So yeah, you have to pay taxes to help feed someone who lost their job. If more folks were naturally charitable, you wouldn't have to. If more folks were decent overall, we wouldn't need the government to help those in need.
60s were the golden period in the history. You can see Kennedy in US, Charles De Gaulle in France, Mao Tse Tung in China and Nehru in India. So many great leaders and now we can see only a miniature of what we had seen before.
If by "country" he means "people" then I applaud him. If by "country" he means "government" then damn him. The state doesn't do anything to better mankind. If his meaning for "country" is "the state" then he should be saying "ask not what I can do for my country, ask what my country has done to me."
People forget that the Democrats of the 60s were actually considered the more conservative party. They've reversed rolls since then. Though both parties work for the same people these days.
@TheNp42 He was a conservative, just ran as a Democrat do to Family History with the party. He actually wanted to get rid of the Federal Reserve and he lowered Taxes sadly he was murdered and then we had LBJ and Nixon
@TheNp42 Not true... most conservatives would be the first to exploit the laws of the country to make more money for themselves. More liberals are towards working for the betterment of the country as a whole.

@jfkpublicservant I guess I did not know the economy at that time. I was not around at that time or even thought of. I compare Kennedy to Obama. Thry are about the same. Kennedy had guts and Obama has guts. Two great Presidents.
There are a lot of unintelligent people with no integrity who post ridiculously benign comments on these video's of very important people. Mostly I would suspect jealous of their past success and being born without a brain. Do everyone a favour & go play in your own poo on the highway.
@vergalechera The idea was to get the American people into the mood of sacrifice.
And yes, people have always depended on their governments to magically solve their problems, when WE can do much more for each other than our government ever could.
The pathetic phrase "Ask Not" ment DON"T ASK. It hasn't done nothing for no one, and it will not do nothing at all, therefore those words never ment NOTHING and jfk though those words would take him to higher places.
Yeah it's called believing that Quality healthcare should be an inate right of all Americans.
Paying for it? We pay way too much now because the HMO cartel in this nation have fixed the prices and paid off representatives on the Right to block every piece of legislation so nothing can get done!
We had them scared shitless when we came close with the "Public Option". This would've forced them to be fair.
But they bought out 5 of the "Blue Dog" Democrats to preserve their monopoly!
even though i am hardcore right wing, I agree with this speech... I think about it every day, and people should REMEMBER it... and those who were not there, like me, LEARN IT..!
a tru inspiration, it is wonderful that despite a new generation and new ideas and new technology, people still remember him not just as "That guy who was a president" but as a leader and a friend.
From unscripted CIA documents, America under the Kennedy administration orchestrated a military coup to overthrow and murder President Diem of South Vietnam government, who strongly opposed U.S. troops' presence in Vietnam because it would be used as a propaganda by communists to lure more Vietnamese to fight against South Vietnam and America; Ho chi Minh, communist leader of North Vietnam, also celebrated this coup and said, "We will win this war; I cannot believe Americans are so stupid."
The days of asking what you can do for your country must come to a close as the country hasn't since reflected upon what it can do for you as a result.
The government is here for the people, the people aren't here for the government.
We pay taxes, so they raise them higher. They blindly toss the money at our problems, and they refuse to repeal or even loosen the laws that are so frequently broken. They abuse the troops that join them.
Its time for the government to work for its people again
It hasn't done nothing for you, and it wil not do nothing at all, ytherefore those words never ment NOTHING and jfk though those words would take him to higher places.
@thug2ryde thats an excellent speech and it should be heard through out the country you words are true and need to be heard. My friend you have my respects.
@155domo Actions and policies are more important than words from a speech. JFK has probably been one of the most overrated presidents in U.S. History. Why on Earth are we giving credit to a president who endorsed entitlement programs, regulation, foreign aid and had a naive approach of bringing peace to the world through invasions (Bay of Pigs) and continuing Eisenhower's interventionist policies in Vietnam of supporting a corrupt government. JFK=welfare + invasions= un-American.
@thug2ryde true but I don't think JFK meant "goverment" when he said "country." Rather what you can do for your fellow americans - and no I don't mean socialism
@thug2ryde Quit crying and give back to your country that provides for you. Have you given back by providing your time and service to your community, military service, or the youth? Or do you just take from this country and expect others to work for your freedom? With your name thug to ride it sounds as if you have a misperception of what one should be doing with his or her time. Go back to school and learn about what made this nation.
@Sellot91 The only role government should play in people's life is protecting the liberties which we stand for. The government is supposed to work for us.
Does it matter if JFK sounded Republican?!? No! He was a great president. Without him the Soviets would have beat us to the moon, actually we may not of seen anybody go to the moon if he wasn't president he wouldn't have saved ourlives from Nuclear War from the Cuban Missle Crisis. The point is that it doesn't matter if he was republican or democrat, the point is JFK was a great president. He also wouldn't have gotten America in the Vietnam War if he hadn't been assasanated.
No, JFK sounds nothing like the Republican Orthodoxy that tells the world to send their soldiers to killed or be killed in imperial wars.... Nor does Jack sound like the Perverse Republican Orthodoxy that pays the bills by borrowing from China, Russia and Saudi Arabia... Democrats may bloat the damn budget, but at least they pay for it!!!
If Republicans stand for freedom then we're not in a recession. You partisan fools believe your principles to be noble when they are in fact the tools of politicians to gain power. Your rulers manipulate public opinion to make their coercive nature seem NECESSARY. With an understanding of free markets one cannot endorse his slave plantation knowing that government coercion is evil in every case. As a free market anarchist I say down with the coercive monopoly that is my country.
Exactly! Liberal democrats now need to remember what their past heroes said! All this about what can Bush do for me, or what can Obama do for me.......nonsense in the eyes of JFK! Do something for your country!
@plajproductionz Blame it on the liberal democrats! Whatever happened to standing behind our President in this country. Whether you voted for him or not, be a proud American & try to make this country stronger! Give him a chance for heaven's sake! When you bash our own President what do you say to other countries? You are disrepectful & don't care who comes here to harm us! We must stand together & get through tough times!
You right it does sound Republican. Because Repulican principles are based on less government interference with the individual citizen. What Kennedy said was for the "country" to rely on the citizen and not the citizen rely on the country. This speech was from the 1960's when Politics were not as divisive as now, so diffirent politicians capaigned on diffirent platforms only withe distinct diffirences.
I find it interesting that the second part of this quote is so often unmentioned. Perhaps it is because of how interventionist our country has become.

Wish that Obama and the rest of the Tax and Spenders and supporters of ObamaCare would hear this.
Get off your ass and do something about it instead of saying, "We need healthcare."
We all need healthcare, the problem is that the House and Senate and Obamessiah think that we shouldn't earn it.
buckynance 2 years ago
a tru inspiration, it is wonderful that despite a new generation and new ideas and new technology, people still remember him not just as "That guy who was a president" but as a leader and a friend.

@thug2ryde thats an excellent speech and it should be heard through out the country you words are true and need to be heard. My friend you have my respects.
155domo 8 months ago
@155domo Actions and policies are more important than words from a speech. JFK has probably been one of the most overrated presidents in U.S. History. Why on Earth are we giving credit to a president who endorsed entitlement programs, regulation, foreign aid and had a naive approach of bringing peace to the world through invasions (Bay of Pigs) and continuing Eisenhower's interventionist policies in Vietnam of supporting a corrupt government. JFK=welfare + invasions= un-American.
jimmyt3411 8 months ago
@thug2ryde true but I don't think JFK meant "goverment" when he said "country." Rather what you can do for your fellow americans - and no I don't mean socialism
SlimKozi 8 months ago
@thug2ryde Quit crying and give back to your country that provides for you. Have you given back by providing your time and service to your community, military service, or the youth? Or do you just take from this country and expect others to work for your freedom? With your name thug to ride it sounds as if you have a misperception of what one should be doing with his or her time. Go back to school and learn about what made this nation.

@thug2ryde "It is the people's job to support the Government, not the Government's job to support the people."
Sellot91 6 months ago
@Sellot91 The only role government should play in people's life is protecting the liberties which we stand for. The government is supposed to work for us.

Does it matter if JFK sounded Republican?!? No! He was a great president. Without him the Soviets would have beat us to the moon, actually we may not of seen anybody go to the moon if he wasn't president he wouldn't have saved ourlives from Nuclear War from the Cuban Missle Crisis. The point is that it doesn't matter if he was republican or democrat, the point is JFK was a great president. He also wouldn't have gotten America in the Vietnam War if he hadn't been assasanated.
rgreenberg35 3 years ago
Or maybe just maybe. He was talking about the new space race and to get people invovled in it.

You tell em' Jack!!!

As a free market anarchist I say down with the coercive monopoly that is my country.
couchpotatoe387 3 years ago
Exactly! Liberal democrats now need to remember what their past heroes said! All this about what can Bush do for me, or what can Obama do for me.......nonsense in the eyes of JFK! Do something for your country!
plajproductionz 3 years ago 25
@plajproductionz Blame it on the liberal democrats! Whatever happened to standing behind our President in this country. Whether you voted for him or not, be a proud American & try to make this country stronger! Give him a chance for heaven's sake! When you bash our own President what do you say to other countries? You are disrepectful & don't care who comes here to harm us! We must stand together & get through tough times!

Sounds more like a Republican!
tombstone1111 3 years ago
You right it does sound Republican. Because Repulican principles are based on less government interference with the individual citizen. What Kennedy said was for the "country" to rely on the citizen and not the citizen rely on the country. This speech was from the 1960's when Politics were not as divisive as now, so diffirent politicians capaigned on diffirent platforms only withe distinct diffirences.
