if you can't go around the curves, then try the left-right method..

so the side with the long paper will be the base, and at first i think you go right, turn, left, turn....

I think you are thinking of paper cranes. :) I don't remember seeing anything about making 1000 paper stars to make it lucky....that was always 1000 paper cranes to make a wish. :)
