When Kate left the series slightly started to go downhill once Nick left, the series became shitty with the lead role changing every two series. Series should have been simply about the rowan's should have ended when Nick had left.

I grew up watching Heartbeat as a kid.. I Loved Nick and Kate they were my favorite characters... I've got the first and second series on dvd. i also love watching the re-runs on itv 3. Still cry all the time when i watch the episode Thief In The night where Kate dies. The First 5 series where the best.

Just watched the episode when Kate dies on channel 7two, best episodes ever when Nick and Kate were the focal characters. Can anyone offer any info as to why Kate was killed off? Series just seemed to fall apart after Kate died.

@aramat111 I think Niamh Cusack that played Kate wanted to leave and well the only way to break up a well loved couple like Nick and Kate is to kill one of them off.

The episode "bitter Harvest" possibly one of the very best ever, with the sadly missed James Hazeldine is a real heartbreaker !.

@askskog Bitter Harvest is a fantastic episode. I've not seen it in years but still remember when they set the fires and 'Night in White Satin' by the Moody Blues was playing.

my parents are off to Aidensfield (Gothland) this week! I like this program right up until Mike Bradley left. Steve Crane and his successors have never had the same impact as PC's Rowan and Bradley! Oscar was my favorite Sargent and Greengrass was the best rogue!
