It seems like human nature to feel they and their group deserve more and them and those people need to be taken out of the social equation. That is essentially Nazi or Republican in political nature. If basic social resources are not cultivated, the prisons are going to end up as the wasteland peopled with the neglected. Corporate prisons make profit from the incarceration of humans. Thus their corporate logic is that in order to make more profit they must incarcerate more people. The fact remains that the people in jail are often compelled to work for companies to pay for their incarceration while at the same the prison companies are still getting your tax dollars. Well I agree with you that many people who decry the imprisonment of drug offenders still maintain that it is some sort of social malady that needs to be confronted on a large scale with public funding. But I would suggest looking into the corporate prison trend and little more, you will find things that should shock the freedom loving person, given taht you can accept the majority of people are in the prison population because of the drug war and given that you agree they should not be there.

I think we're pretty much on the same page. I don't object to corporate prisons any more than the government ones. They both have strong motivations to expand but I don't see corporations the primary ones promoting the policies that got us here nor is it solely the neocons. the people claming to represent the inner city and black community have plaid a major role in promoting the war on drugs as a cure for social problems but there's plenty of blame to spread around

I'd say the real problem with the American criminal justice system is that is aimed towards punishment rather than rehabilitation. If we look at Norway, lowest murder rate in the world, you'd find out that prisons are not there to punish people but to teach them how to live in society. This generates more revenue than locking up people for 40 years

There needs to be a new approach to crime in the US if this is ever gonna change

Removing the third strike law would also be a good idea
