You have to understand that only about 0.5% of Coasties actually see this type of action. I spent a while in the USCG and didn't see any of it. Depends on what job you go into...

CG Members have the opportunity to compete for SEAL positions... also the CG has a patrol force in the Persian Gulf located in Bahrain. AST's (also known as rescue swimmers) do some pretty hairy stuff jumping out of helicopters. Many rescues are also conducted by our small boat station personnel and counter narcotic operations are conducted by tactical law enforcement team members stationed on CG vessels, USN vessels and vessels belonging to our allies.
