  • lol it looks like you're flying...awesome :D !

  • That's actually the spongebob dance at 00:40

  • @SuperOGMudbone If you watch the rest of the video when I get to that move I explain that this was originally a charleston move that people recently started doing again calling it the spongebob.

  • Really good job,the cam doesn´t mater. What´s the song please?

  • @1994colibri

Name of the song is "the charleston"

  • @coolcatsrus :thank you so much! :D

  • I love you.

  • I thought this was gonna be shuffling

  • That guy has no life

  • This reminds me of takeSomeCrime.

  • Old school steps! Thanks for this vid, I'm trying to animate a character doing the dance and this helps a lot. :)

  • Thanks for the video =D!

  • Such a great tutorial, thank you so much! Great great great! :D

    Love from Germany!

  • Good video ^_^ Was the only one I've found that was clear and concise enough for me to understand.

  • lol now mix this in with the spongebob and you got a LMFAO style dance party right there haha

  • Even though the audio is pretty hard to hear, this has been the most helpful tutorial I've found on the Charleston. ^^

  • @Rosiercentral here is one with better audio

  • @coolcatsrus Thank you! ^^

  • this video didnt teach me how to do the charleston it taught me that there are many nerds in the world that for some reason cant get a life i mean seriously....doing the charleston to some stupid piano song..... aye aye aye

  • @24cocoagirl Quite a charmer, there aren't ya?

  • Thanks boss. Quick learning, looked like I knew something with my friends's first lesson.

  • Lol I use the 20s One when i shuffle xD

  • This is funny. :D

  • can you plz plz make another video on the jazz 20s chareston. im havin a hard time following

  • @justduana

Same here LMFAO said sumin bout the charleston and I looked at this...... I kinda looks like what they were doing but idk

  • @werdle93 They imitate the beginning and then just throw in some other "old school" dances like the Running Man, its fun seeing where something starts and what it can be chopped and molded into. :-).

  • I find this quite odd that LMFAO led me here. Dance evolution ftw..?

  • @JustDuana

Video or link where they talk about it or do it?

  • @coolcatsrus Search for: Party Rock Anthem: Teach Me How To Shuffle he mentions the charleston there

  • @JustDuana lol same here :)

  • @JustDuana LMFAO just calls it shuffling, but they use electro shuffle (as opposed to oldschool Melbourne or hardstyle shuffle), which leans heavily on the old Charleston moves. The double-outward-heel moves and that move now called the "Spongebob" are borrowed. It makes sense; shuffle and Charleston are both leg-heavy styles with a lot of ankle rotations, kicks, and body flight. They merge well with each other.

  • @rnecas This guy knows his shuffling!

  • I love you and the spongebob.

  • Terrific, thanks so much for this!! You're really a swell dancer and teacher! :)

  • This is quite catchy. I like the music and the dance. Could you dance the charleston to "My Blue Heaven"? Thanks for this. I've been meaning to look up info on the charleston i'm older now and I used to make fun of this era. I've read the "Great Gatsbay" and I saw a bbc series called "Love on a Branch Line" Thanks again

  • Thanks alot, I have to go to a wedding and needed to know the charalston for a group dance. Thanks for uploading the basic steps

  • @BlueCrayon4687

I think so, at least the basic steps.

  • My good sir,

You should definitely go to a club and do this. If you find a girl interested in this, I think you've found wife material. And this is not sarcasm.

  • THIS IS SOO HARD D:

  • ok so beleive it or not i need this for my history project lol thanks

  • @missfresh120 LMFAO me 2 xD

  • CHARLESTON STAMPEDE

Here's a new Charleston dance on Youtube called the Charelston Stampede Danced to James P Johnson's "Charleston".

    Kind Regards

    Anthony & Stephanie

  • Wanting to learn this for extra credit in my U.S. history class. We're learning about the "Roarin' Twenties" , so our teacher was willing to give extra credit to anyone who could do it :)

  • Where'd you learn how to dance? It's lovely!

  • yo im sure a whole bunch of e-tards are trying to learn this... you should put more descriptive directions to it.

  • I started laughing so damn hard at 7:40....

I held it in subconsciously till that point... and now i'm crying... oh god.

Thanks for the video man. Appreciate it. You're awesome dude.

  • Wow. You're pretty much... everything I want to be. Except a guy. :D

  • @miisspelled Well thank you very much. I have no problem with the guy part though lol.

  • good teacher. alot of fun. so much in one video. thumbs up

  • Wow! What fun! I never knew the Charleston evolved so much over time. You make it look so easy.

  • Easy to follow..excellent Thanks

  • That was great! I knew just enough Charelston to be cast in "A River Runs Through It" years ago but needed more to choroegraph for my Zumba class. Thanks, you looked fantastic!

  • this was fun :)

  • This video is awesome! Thanks for posting it and sharing your expertise!

  • What is the song called that is playing at the end when he puts it all together?

  • Decided to learn this today. Lol, actually I had only known this dance from It's a Wonderful Life but had no idea it was a big thing, so imagine how pleased I was to find how to's out there. :-)

  • arghhh it's soooo hard!

  • I can't even get the beginning steps right even after pausing the video like 50 times! I wish i could play it in slow motion.

  • It looks like shuffling and starstyle got some moves from this :P

  • Great way to bring it all together at the end :) Shame the quality is not the best, but hey, whatever works!

  • no.

  • i loved it...very good

  • i lov this vid it helps me alot

  • cool

  • beautiful dance

  • perfect also for the song of bruce springsteen "pay me my money down" exactly the same speed ;-)

    try it for more fun.

  • The 20's charleston is known for the "sugar" move. You do a variation of the "sugar" move that I call "flapper sugar" or "sugar flapper", where you do crosses with the arms on every 2nd knee pop made to represent the lady's flapper movements. The leg movements in the "sugar" are a sort of "mashed potato" action but without foot movement. The very basic "sugar" can also be done without the hands touching the knees, which I call "the simple sugar". That's what I like about 20's charleston....

  • haha wow this looks like some of the street dances ppl do now. its crazy how i already know the basics to doing this and the advanced moves of the charleston are actually things ppl do now adays

  • now when i go to a dance, people talkin about they can do the jerk and they can 2 step, well i can charleston biznitches! xD great dance and good job on the tutorial

  • HAHA this dance is hard. lol i tried learning it. it was fun great job! whered u learn how to dance it?

  • @tispinaysmiles I learned by watching videos of other people doing it professionally. Time consuming, but it works.

  • lovely!

  • I'm quite good at in now. Even the twisting out both ankles thing. I have a gramophone so I'm looking for 78 RPM record of the charleston to do at parties.

  • you're amazing! I need to learn this for a play, and I think I've got quite a few of them down by now! Thanks so much!

  • Where are you located? We have a Charleston party every year and sure could use your help!

  • In Louisville Ky

  • saturday night, by myself, watching you do the charleston.

    best.life.ever!

    no, i mean the worst.

  • lol

  • lol. sounds like your problem buddy, not mine.

  • Dude u rock...

  • Well, i have the basic steps now. Practiced while waiting for a bus! Got some funny looks.

  • hehe done plenty of those myself

  • @Epc100 haha! i practiced in the train station, though it was midnight and hardly anyone was there - no looks. :(

  • @Epc100 i hope the bus stopped

  • Ive wanted to learn this for years! Thanks. Ill have a go.

  • This was pure comedy

  • Beautiful work. Thanks for breaking these down.

It seems you could handle yourself just as well in a bar fight as a ballroom with these moves. So many flailing arm and leg movements.

  • Nice work! It's surprising there isn't anyone else on the net that seems to know these variations. I do a good 20 versions of the Charleston myself, and I still need to learn 3-4 of your moves. Thanks!

  • Nice video, really explains a lot

  • go to so you think you can dance and do the charleston dance!!!

  • Hey you're very good actually, did you find a fine young lady to charleston with you?

    I would love to ;o)

the kick moves are hard, yeah, but if you listen to the music, just feel it and get the rhythm

then it' pretty easy and really exhausting

  • OG for sure

  • wow you're great dancer! I was training to learn the charleston dance, but it's very difficoult...but, although, very funny!

Congratulations!!!*____* Now I can do something about charlestonxD

  • How do you do the move from 2:07-2:41? I can't really get how you do it from your short explanation. I would really appreciate it if you said how to do it thoroughly :)

  • I second that, I can never get that part...

  • Exactly!! Gosh, I want to learn it so bad. I know I could do it if someone literally could show me in person. I think it's a matter of getting the rhythm.

  • Ah this was hard, but you did an excellent job. I totally know kinda the basics now! Thank you =)

  • dang, the switches are hard :-/ lol

  • lol the spongebob was thrown in there

  • That's when you the spongebob and is a water down dance from HIP HOP which was the Party Machine and the Party Machine is a water down dance from the Charleston.

  • ok this is an old video so you have probably already corrected this but loosen up on your around the world... loosen up the legs and open your hands.

  • @mcusac1 Just what I was going to say! Let loose! Be more wild in your movements.

  • Fantastic dance and technique. I sure did appreciate the explanation, but where did you learn this? I am agreement with the previous comments by alsouthstuff. Also, when will you learn the black bottom dance and varsity drag and show us them as well! Thanks for the video, but it would be helpful to see a clearer rendition of yourself on youtube!

  • MAN......... You are GREAT! Good to see younger people interested and preserving this old time dance style. You do an awesome job!! Please find the female so you can show us the Charleston "couple steps" PLEASE keep up the good work!!!

  • That is so CUTE!

  • i cannot for the life of me do the steps at 2:22

  • wow you're awesome...im going to a 1920's murder party next week and i wanted to impress the ladies with my wicked skills...too bad i have none. but this really helps. thanks!

  • You make that look so easy! How/why did you originally learn to do that? Lol

  • Watched videos on youtube of people doing the charleston like al and leon

  • Well the Charleston Dance is the foundation for the sponge bob dance. If you look at the original video from the 20's, you'll see that he's doing the sponge bob with extra moves in it. So basically, if this dance is "out there" I'd say the sponge bob is also pretty "out there" especially considering what cartoon character the sponge bob is named after...... *cough*cough*

  • Put a hip hop beat to it.

    "Ain't gonna hurt nobody" LOL

  • For a 20's dance, the Charleston seems pretty... out there. I want a time machine so fucking bad...

  • jveux bien epouser un gars qui danse comme ça!!!!! in english : I wish I married a man who is able to dance like that!!!!!!!! =)

  • wicked, cheers mate, its harder than it looks :)

  • Spongebob dance? What? Hahaha.

    Great video though.

  • nice....my brother's been trying to find a really good video on the Charleston...and soo far urs is the best.... awesome job!!!

  • I hate you !!! You make it look so easy !!!

I got intrigued by the Charleston dance by watching the "High Road to China" back in 1982 and have been trying to practice! You need to write a book :)

    You're GREAT at this!

  • one would think that it's easy by looking at the video. in truth, i tried some move and even the basic step i find quite uneasy. when i tried the charleston kick i almost fell on the floor, quite comical. i'll keep trying.

  • Wow, this is really cool

  • I actually had to learn this (from this video itself) in my social studies class for our 1920's unit XD

  • Thanx soooo much !!!
