I used to think this was an odd-looking car in its time. I think I preferred the Crown Vic's restyle. But they had to do something, since the previous car's basic shape dated to 1977 or '78 (whichever it was).
@MrDeanmartin123 Ehh, I can think of dozens, maybe HUNDREDS of cars built by GM alone that were worse than this, let alone all the other car makers. They couldn't build the 94-96 Impalas fast enough. I believe YOU are the "epic fail" for trying to look cool on YouTube by labeling something "epic fail".
@chfpontiac Look cool? Everybody who has ever driven a Caprice before relized it's garbage. The suspension sucks and the car handles like custard. America always assembled shitty cars. Why? Because they don't see any effort into making quality cars. The only thing that matters to an american is fake leather interior 20 cup holders and of course and automatic transmission. The only reason because they were sold so much is because they were cheap. Get a german car to see what I'm talking about.
@ArmsterCommentaries Friend, please re-read the original post and my reply. My gripe is with the broad brush people like to use when categorizing something and feeling the need to use YouTube to make a statement like "[Insert profound thought about something here]....EPIC FAIL." It's lame. The Caprice was NOT a fail. That would be like saying the 80's Chrysler K-Cars were an "epic fail" (wanna talk sucky cars??) because they weren't peformance vehicles. They were a home run. Period.
@ArmsterCommentaries For the record, I refuse to own a German car. Lease, MAYBE. Never own. German cars are hardly bomb-proof. Great driving as long as you have a warranty but hardly more reliable than any american branded car. Don't confuse driving dynamics with reliability & build quality, a mistake many people make when they see a 5-6yr old german car for short money. There's a reason it's short money & when the repair bills come in, a home equity loan or 2nd mortgage may be in your future
@andy26111 I always enjoyed driving my grandmothers 1984 Caprice Classic when it was brand new when I had the chance. I know that under the skin, they are the same vehicle- it is just that MY preferance was the boxy-looking chevy's from1978 thru i think 1990. If chevy has half of a brain, they would bring them back rear wheel drive, V-8 engine and see how the sales would grow!!
@mtfune i agree i liked that style more but this style was nice too.... i prefered it over the similar looking Crown Vics. of the same time. Chevy really screwed up by pulling the plug on this car and boy did they pay. I loved the 98 Crown Vics. and up but one thing i always thought was it reminded me of these Caprice but Updated by Ford. I wonder if chevy had not pulled the plug would the caprice look similar to the Crown Vic. Still?
@jakesaintsrow123 YEP!! IT was a DAWM good car!!!! When it got to be about 12 years old, she traded it in for a1996 Pontiac Grand Prix. She is 85 years old now and she can't drive any more, so we take turns helping her out. When she was in her prime, she had a lead foot and always drove the mid 1970's Impala, Caprice or 1977 Monte Carlo- which she traded for the 84 Caprice. They were ALL GREAT cars that were built well and hauled ass!!!
@jakesaintsrow123 Yep!! She and my grandfather liv in the middle of no where and she would let me drive it- I was about 14-15 years old and my grandfather taught me how to drive when I was 12- I remember driving that 84 Caprice after being used to the 77 Monte Carlo and the Caprice felt REALLY light- As you probably know, they downsized ALL of there cars in 1978. My grandparents had money and he was always trying to get her to get a Cadillac or a Mercedez- BUT she LOVED her Chevy's.
@jakesaintsrow123 I still have the sales brochure for the 1984 Caprice/Impala from when she picked it up from the dealer. I Collect sales brochures- I currently have close to 1,000 of them- I probably have a goldmine I am sitting on and don't even know it.
@Rtfune Cool hobby. I wish I had that kind of foresight years ago. Always been a car guy who randomly stops at dealers to look at new cars even when I'm not buying. That will be a good collection to hand down to family some day!
@chfpontiac YEP- ALL of my nephews are fighting over them - Naturally I keep them in my secret hiding space- They always ask me who will get them when I die and I told ALL of them at once if they ask me that again, I am putting ALL of them in the fireplace.- I have BMW- Mercedez- almost ALL of the products GM has made, lots of Ford products, I have The caprice/impala, monte carlo, etc-- and they will age like the finest wine and people actually will pay you for something you got for free.
@mtfune As it turns out, Chevy is indeed bringing out a Caprice that is rear-wheel drive (and maybe with a V-8...I don't remember). It's actually the car formerly known as the Pontiac G8 (apparently a great car from every review I've read).
UNFORTUNATELY, they are only going to be selling it to police forces. Meanwhile, they keep the seriously-dated FWD Impala in their lineup.......what the hell, Chevy?!
@MaestroTJS Yeah!! I agree!! THAT really sucks!! The Caprice is an AMERICAN Icon and now it will be used only as a workhorse- that REALLY sucks. I don't know what the folks at GM have been smoking, BUT they need to smoke the GOOD shit and get creative again.
