I was hit on my mountain bike broadside by a car that didn't see me. I went into the windshield which exploded, I caved in the roof and was thrown over the top of the car doing a flip to land on my back on the street. I had my leg broken in two places, all my ribs on one side and internal bleeding. The car was going about 30 miles an hour. I sustained probably the same injuries if not more on a quiet Saturday ride.

I watched a documentary on this attempt .. for whatever resin there where problems with his main bike and instead of waiting for it he used a stand in bike that was engineered / set-up for snow riding ! No wonder the frame snapped .. he was going down the side of an active volcano with a bike not made to do it. He should have played it safe but he wanted to prove something a paid a grate price.

I'm lucky to be alive or not knocked out today. I went to a friends house and went down an insane hill which led to a ramp. I speed up and then couldn't slow down, I went off the ramp the wrong direction and flew belly flop style off my bike on a 5 foot jump down into a bunch of rocks. How am I alive? The bike's a One Off handbuilt machine. The only thing failing was the strength of material at the head tube joint. If the joint had gusseting, (not sure it didn't) or stronger Gusset plates, or if not that, longer travel in the fork, he would probably negated the incredibly high sheer forces working on that joint at the transition. If you watch the video close;y, you'll see the bike was going through a radical angle transition, which is why so much force struck the joint at once.

Regarding his helmet coming off. Just as in speed skiing, the outer faired helmet is large but very thin and light and is designed to break away easily as otherwise it could exert too much leverage on your neck. It's usual to have a more robust inner helmet that it's attached to with weak plastic screws, though I can't see one in this case.
