  • I think the drummer is having a seizure!! but all kidding aside this is great

  • Waller - for me - was a principal reason I survived the 70's. His music, at its best, is simply sublime. It has a tendency to make me happier in almost all situations. This track - part of a "Soundie" - is not the best performance of "The Joint is Jumpin'" on record, but it is probably the most energetic one. The RCA studio (audio) record from 1937 is the monster hit. It's also on YouTube. The problem with Soundies is that the soundtrack is poorly adapted to the picture.

  • "The Joint Is Jumpin'" (minus the female vocal insertion) was a Fats Waller smash in November 1937 (Victor 25712). If you don't own a Fats Waller CD, go out and buy one! You''ll be so gald you did!

  • 0:35 is priceless

  • The man's facial expressions crack me up....I love the swing vibe this has

  • i have to do a tap dance to this nd its fast!!!!

  • 1:08 to 1:14 - one of the earliest electric guitar solos ever recorded??

  • what year was this song written?

  • comedy took away from his playing~He was actually a great strider!

  • Note all the elements of modern ganster rap present:

References to concealed carry weapons, alchohol, adversarial relationships with the police, prison, violence against women (in the original recording), and particular women dancing provacatively.

This is actually the first ganster rap video.

    Fats, the Original Notorious B.I.G.

  • @TaylorMonkeyAl

How about looking at it as a joyous expression of art and celebration of life in the face of and in spite of racism, economic injustice and all the rest that Black people had to contend with just 6-7 decades after the end of an era in which they had been bought and sold like livestock for centuries?

  • @TaylorMonkeyAl Nah, that was Bessie Smith.

  • I just bought a 10 cd boxset of Fats, and it's a treasure of great recordings. His interperations of songs can be so surprising at times. There's a recording of Ellington's Ring Dem Bells that is done in a sensitive almost classical style that is really special. Long live Fats!!

  • Hip Hop destroyed the true valuable culture of African Americans. All that stride, ragtime, blues, rock&roll,.... are ALL BLACK INVENTIONS.

  • yesssss he's so awesome!!

  • What a character!

  • My mom was a big band singer, so music from this era knocks me out. Nobody, I think, ever had a better time playing than Fats Waller. And the cat could wail. Big time chops.

  • Checking them for weapons? This looks like a modern party to me!

  • ya!

  • they had pimp my Edsel back then

  • damn is this like old MTV? lol

  • lol he looks so goofy but hes so awesome

  • This video gives me the impression that the 40's weren't all that different than now, usually you see videos from this time that are all slow and no one is happy, but this one is the complete opposite.

  • Thank`s for this one.

  • rap from the 40s

  • "don't ever give yr right name!" :D

lol no way this guy is so funny :D

  • this shit is dope

  • Not surprisingly, I was introduced to "Fats" Waller through a clip of him singing "Ain't Misbehavin'." He's been my favorite pianist, and one of my favorite jazz performers, since. Excellent. What entertainment!

  • Even in those days they had to search them for weapons.

  • Where did you get this? It's great. Fats Waller does the best version of "Lulu's Back In Town".

  • What's with his face. It's hilarious... I wish I could see him live D=

  • lol i know what yuo mean about the face...he's working that camera for sure! i don't get it, surely tv was still rare? this guy was already a pro!

i love fats, such a great vibe in his playing, and WHAT a player! :O

  • The roots of rhythm and blues... the first divergence of two branches from the trunk of swing... r'n'b was one branch, be-bop was the other... guess which one spawned rock'n'roll...

  • yeah i just learned about him in LA cuz we are writing papers about the Harlem Renaissance

I wish we could have like a culture boom today

  • its sad wat my generation missed out on. :`( this guy is a great player

  • Awesome!

  • The ultimate entertainer and an extraordinary musician! Great vid.

  • This video just makes me want to get up and dance forever! Prime entertainment. You can't help but bounce your head to this tune.

  • Fats Waller: Best entertainer ever! He, Gershwin, and Art Tatum: America's greatest.

  • Whoa, I bought one of Fats Wallers albums fourteen years ago and fell in love with his music, one of my favorite songs of his was 'I can't give you anything but love' and sung it with a woman. He was also a funny charming sort of guy. I'm completely amazed that there is a actual video for this song, must date back around the 1930s/1940s?

  • Early, early music video, dude. I realized it when it showed a "neighbor" as he was saying, "Neighbors are knockin'..."

    P.S. Fats is great.

  • amazing thanks for posting this

  • well this was from a different time-it was called "swing" or "Jump" music played by a small band usually piano trumpet clarinet/sax/bass/ drums-fats waller was one of the most famous his music "crossed over" i.e. got heard by more white people than some of the forgotten groups. this was like the "dirty" swing music, most mainstream people listened to the "big band" type swing music. another artist you can still find is louis jordan and the tympani 5 check them out too.

  • This joint is jumpin.

  • Jesus christ!!! is that off of a V-Disk?

  • what kind of music do you listen to?

  • Well, thia is early Jazz/swing.

Fats was an all time classic American songwriter, entertainer and virtuoso pianist.

A true artist. He wrote song like Ain't Misbehavin' and Honeysuckle Rose which are standards of the songbook.

He had fabulous technique and along with a few others created the piano style known as "Stride Piano" an original. if it's not your cup of tea, then that's fine, but try to appreciate the artistry if you can.

  • Oh, I'm not questioning that he was one of the most talented artists or that people like him. I'm not one of the immature 13 year olds going "ur music sux lol!!1" I'm just saying I don't understand the appeal of this type of music. I know taste is relative and everything, but I still find it hard to understand.

I didn't know about the stride piano thing though. Looked it up on wiki, it's interesting even though I don't like it.

  • Do tell, to quench my own personal curiosity, what do you find unappealing about it?

Not trying to invalidate your opinion, just curious.

  • I dunno. Like I said, taste is relative. I just don't like it. It bugs me for some reason.

  • the beggining sounds like tiger rag sort of

  • go fats!

  • godliness, best ever, dig it!

  • At about 2:20, Fats can be seen, but not heard, saying "It's so easy when you know how", a remark he made from time to time during piano solos such as this one. The Soundies were all dubbed, and someone as improvisational as Mr. Waller doubtless could not remember at the time of the filming, what he had said during the recording. You'll also notice that his hands and shoulders don't move to the pace of the rollicking piano solo.

  • Very interesting.

  • yes affirmative

  • FATS IS THE MAN!!!

  • cant beat old fats, eh?

  • is that Chick Webb on drums?

  • It's Wilmore "Slick" Jones. There is at least one film appearance of Chick Webb, but the drummer himself is now shown, perhaps because of his physical deformity.

  • Is that my &*%$ n ur %#@^

  • This is a 'soundie', an early music video. Waller was the greatest!

  • come si fa a tenere fermi i piedi quando suona Fats , nemmeno se me li inchiodo al pavimento

  • 1'58''-2'04'' is the best!

    :D
