@SierraLD you don't have to wear anything under shalwar kameez, it's actually very airy and comfortable and under abaya you can wear a short dress or shorts because you won't see it anyway if it's long enough. In case of scarf you can wear a lighter colored one and also they make very thin one and it actually protects your head from the sun. For sun and wind in desert, traditional Arab clothing is very practical as it sheilds you from the sun. It dates back to Pre-Islam.

There are many things in the world people find weird because it is something they are not used to nor something in which is probably the 'norm' for them.
