  • This is like my 3rd time watching this video... XD

  • it's probabaly too big because you chose A4 size instead of A5. Common mistake.

  • I wanted to like you but.......I think your head and book is FULL OF SHIT

  • Wait a second, YOU chose the size of the book, then you complained about the size?

    You made two classic mistakes...

    1. You told us nothing of what the book is about, so why would we buy it?

    2. You are not offering a paperback version.

90% of books sold are sold in paperback

And what makes you think your book is in Walmart?

  • @johnmonk66 Yeah, classic 1 was something I should've done, too late now (that and I wouldn't endorse it anymore, I think it sucks now) 2, next one I was planning on doing both, again I'm not worrying about my first one because I think it sucks now. And as for Walmart, at the time I published it (and the video) I read that lots of books and authors lose revenue because of books being sold there. And not writing out a script before-hand I must've thought I needed to add something else

  • One question

how much does it cost to make the book from lulu?

  • @AmuTheReal

To make a book - Free

To get a copy of the book - Depends on many factors, color or B&W (not sure if paper type is included), number of pages, Hard-cover or Soft-cover, etc.

Also there are extras that help the quality - hiring a painter and or Graphic Designer for your cover, hiring an editor, advertising etc... I was pure broke, so I made do with what I had.

  • so you have been published for a year now. Hows it going? Well I was jsut like you but I set up my book signings at libraries where they publisize your book free. Also, when you know when you are going to do the signings and where, talk to the media so that they can do a story about you. They like to do stories about local people. Also make a websit, facebook, twitter pages for our book. "Essential guide to getting your book published" is the book u need to read.

  • you are just toooooooooo cute. :3

so you dont get a free copy of youre own book?

can you choose the size of youre book?

i dont get why theres a feather for the cover. (i dont mean it in a bad way im just curious.

PLEASE ANSWER MY QUISTIONS. PRETTY PLEASE?

  • @FunnyLittleRedHead

-No, unfortunately after publishing, you do not get a free copy (would be nice to get one for preview purposes)

-Yes you can, and the size was fixed after the video was made

-The feather was added in so that the cover wasn't a bland leather texture. There would have been too much negative space had I left it as a plain leather texture on the entire cover.

  • you are the cutuest thing i have ever seen. so adorable.

  • i'm writing a positive comment for once. good job for your accomplishment :) i'm publishing a graphic novel on lulu ;)

  • It Looks Good Im Gonna Buy One! You Did A Very God Job!

  • I wanna watch the video, but i cant stop laughing at this dude. He talks like daffy duck man.

  • @im1asshole If you want to here a real duck, I'll do a Donald Duck impression for you XP

  • I read the preview and it does have a good plot to it. Could be re-worked a little but overall good material there. I've self-published on lulu.com as well. Two poetry books and one short novel; all in paperback. So far only sold one copy each. I'm still figuring out how to go about promoting my books. The only thing I can think of as of lately is to save up for one of lulu's promotional packages.

  • @DainerysDesigns Lesse, should NOT have taken years to write it, should have taken MORE time to proof-read, as well as spending the extra mula to get a professional editor, should have double-checked sizes before "publishing" (This includes using Adobe Acrobat to ensure the text doesn't shrink to the page), Should have taken the time to get a professional opinion on cover design, and ultimately, after feeling that it felt childish, taken more time if I wanted to sell it or not. To name a few.

  • @Wotchascamp

I would reccomend a 6x9 size for hardcover, or the smaller "Digest book size" (Approx the same size of the Harry Potter books)

  • have u gotten any success in sales?

  • @THEDEATHCODE20XX Um... No ^^;; Although I did learn what I did wrong, and what I can do to fix it next time around. Failure is part of learning however. No one gets it on their first try (of course there are exceptions to the rule)

  • Interesting! =D I am also writing a book that I wish to one day have in book form and published. So my question is this, Do you have to copy right the book before you send it to lulu? Oh and have some confidence guy. It seems like you sort of doubt your self at times. Im sure your a great writer. Keep your head up, and keep writing. =) good luck!

  • @NinjaFox8000 Well, technically, anything that you create is automatically copyright to you. There is no need for filing for a copyright. A trademark or patent for an idea is a different thing, and usually requires being filed.

As for confidence... Well being my first book I was nervous ^^;; I'm not as nervous anymore, now that I know what to expect.

  • @Wotchascamp I think I chose 10X8 the first time? or something like that? I switched it to the smaller one afterwards, which I believe is 6X9 (I haven't altered it since I fixed the size).

  • Yo man no matter how much hate mail you get on your book atleast you got one how many people can stay that they even published a book. Good luck with the rest of your books and future projects man. They might call you loser now but one day they will call you boss

  • @trikitiger And why exactly did your post get reported as spam @_@

  • @Luka1180 Hm... *looks through all of the posts* No idea. Not really bothered by it however. That's just how Youtube goes. You either get the cooperative or supportive people, or you get the idiots. Not to mention this is a good year old, so... Meh, I'll do my next book differently when I finish it (just going through 2nd draft)

  • @Novyert0827 It's lulu man, anyone can publish a book on there. Anyone.

  • In Tolkien books, glossaries and the like are in the back. Just something to consider.

  • I would recommend you customize the preview of your book to show the entire first chapter of your book. It cuts off during the middle and doesn't do your book fair justice. You show some talent kid. I'm impressed.

  • @cmwritings It originally was the first chapter, but when I updated it reset itself to only show the first 15 pages or so. (before I made it public) Never thought that it was a big deal. Lemme fix that and get it to show the entire chapter. (probably by the time you get this it will be updated)

  • I hope that you get really good reviews on your book. I'm writing a book as well and am thinking about publishing it on Lulu. Your review really helped. I hope that you find success. And perhaps I'll also go buy your book.

  • I reviewed it! There's a link to my review blog on my channel page.

    Mikhailfaulken(dot)wordpress(dot)com

  • @Grayfog

I read your reviews, they were all rather negative I believe. People who publish books on Lulu, may not necessarily have "top notch" writing skills. So just keep that in mind when you review books from lulu.

  • @TheCGIMaster Well, no fucking shit. Lulu has no quality control, why would anyone expect GOOD books? That's kinda the reason I started the blog so many months ago. Self-published books are generally festering piles of shit, and despite my opinion of SoS, it's still one of the better books on there (which tells you something about self-publishing).

  • @Grayfog

I see, I do agree that books should be proof read before publishing. I have no books on Lulu yet, but I plan to once my book has been fully proof read, and possibly added some more "improvements".

  • @TheCGIMaster They do offer the proofreading and editing... For a ridiculous price of at least $150 a book (haven't looked at it in quite a while due to how steep they are). Not exactly a price you want to pay as a penniless college student (which I was at the time).

  • @trikitiger 150 is a lot for someone to spend a few days reading and correcting your book?

That is the cheapest you can get it done anywhere, and money well spent.

  • @johnmonk66 Again, penniless college student of the time (and see another response as I get to the other one)

  • Your name is Terry you pretentious cock

  • "Thith is mai buuk thavir of thekairyu"

What a bunch of self-absorbed weeaboo garbage. I hope, like, 3 people buy it and it gets shitty reviews.

  • @NonUsefulBodies And I hope you get hate mail beyond mountains of the greatest stink of skunks.

Progress comes from experience, and that -includes failure-. It doesn't come from assholes like you who feel that insults are the only way to express criticism. *waves goodbye to bad rubbish*

  • @trikitiger Damn, right on, brutha! Except people have to pay for your failure.

It's like paying thirty bucks to suck shit out of a tiger's ass. And by the way, I am running a book reviews page (specialising in self-published work) and he pointed this out for me to review. Let's see how this holds up in the eyes of the average consumer!

  • @Grayfog More like paying Lulu, I can't make it any cheaper on there. Was actually looking to get it to $15, but it won't let me. Definitely will be able to do a second review now that I have a bit of experience with the pay periods, books, and other junk. It's not bad for a first time book, but it's not great either. What really killed it was taking multiple years to finish it, so I changed visions over the time period.

  • @trikitiger It's not bad for a first-time self-published book. Which isn't saying much, though I wouldn't be as harsh as to say it's total shit. It's edited alright, but there are some odd fallacies and typesetting issues in the book.

All of these will be mentioned in the review, but don't fret; it's still better than the other books I've had to review.

  • @trikitiger My book has about as many pages as yours - maybe a little less - but there is a feature that was recently add to Lulu website where you can sell your book at a discounted price. You should be able to bring the price of the book down to what you paid for it or fairly close.

  • @NonUsefulBodies

    Wow, your a dickhole.

  • @NonUsefulBodies Its a shame it got a really good review...

  • @NonUsefulBodies So he has a little bit of a lisp. Get off his dick, dude, it's just a freaking book. And it doesn't look like "weeaboo garbage" (whatever the hell that means). It actually looks pretty interesting. Don't you have something better to do, like troll on yourself in the mirror?

  • Really, this looks like an interesting novel. You've obviously got a lot of talent. I'm a young author myself; I'm in the middle of writing the fifth draft of my first book, The Shadow Lord.

I know you're not in it for the money, but you might not wanna say "please buy my book". Say like, "Hey, if you buy my book, you can be one of my early fans!" Otherwise, what's in it for them, you know?

Good on ya, though. Keep it up.

  • @iilloopp10 Yeah, but you can't really change videos ^^;; I could put an annotation, but you're more than likely to listen to what someone's saying than reading an annotation. I have another... eight or so videos I'd love to change (private videos now), but I can't. The past has been recorded, and anything that's still publicized on Youtube, is merely that, a recording of the past.

  • how about the cost of production? will it be taken out of revenue or must we pay it ourselves?

  • If you don't like the size, then change it. and sure its TEXT BOOK SIZE, but for me, I don't care. As long as I'm reading a good book.

  • @PaRoDiEr1993 Already changed it long before now, but now that I know Lulu's quirks, I'll be able to do better with the cover-design and sizes.

  • @trikitiger is your book smaller or is it the same size?

  • In regard to the size of the book, I thought that the publisher picks the size of the book?

  • @dillondailynews,

No, the author gets to pick the size :D

  • Hey Man!

    Great job on your book.

I have a couple of question i am trying to make a book about my fraternity sorta like a scrapbook but professionally published as a gift to my fraternity...what it will include some pictures so how do you think the color printing is on lulu's part do they even do color pages?

  • @rassoulini Lulu does print in color pages, however it costs more than using black and white. In your case it would be a great idea to use color pages, however for something like black/white text (or using black/white sketches like the one I'm working on), it's best to stay away from color pages. You can always proof-read via the flash preview that Lulu provides in order to check to see how the pictures will turn out.

  • Does the author get a free copy?

  • @Benzonian612 As a printed book, unfortunately no. However you have to understand that it costs money to print and bind books. However your book will always be free because -you- wrote it (Want to read page 671? Open up your document! lol)

  • Hi Terri,

Nice publishing! I'm also an author on there, though am currently planning my first novel. In regards to your "text book sized" book, there is an option to choose different sizes. When you Start A New Project, make sure you select on paper size

    '6 X 9' or something else.

  • @greebat I haven't had any experience with pictures... YET. But Words are extremely clean

@nikezoomflight I edited it myself, you can hire others to do the editing for you, but it costs money.

@MischiefMakerStudio1 Printing is entirely free, but just like Cafepress, you can make it for yourself, keep it private, change it later on, and anything else of the same category. I don't know if they do flipbooks (I guess you can try), but holographic covers might be an expensive add on.

  • +++ Oh yes, but if you purchase the book yourself, it will cost you money. The price changes depending on how many pages you have. Just like Cafepress when you purchase one of your own shirts or mouse pads. You will always pay the base price to buy your own product.

  • @trikitiger Thanks for more information!I still have a long way to go tho.I got a great character thought up, but no plot yet.Mostly I just post my cartoons on FaceBook! I do have an idea for another book that I know from begining to end, I am just trying to figure out a few things here & there.I also think I might need some practice with flipbooks at first, but I just wanted to make sure first if it was possible or not?I just have alot of ideas in my head if you catch my drift!

  • @trikitiger Do you know any editors? I need one as soon as possible. Thanks!

  • @nikezoomflight Unfortunately I do not, I think I've mentioned it earlier but I'll just type it again for good measure. I had to use my peers as editors, but if you're looking for an editor, your best bet online is to search online. Just remember that free is not always the best, and you get what you paid for (You can pay money at Lulu to get a professional editor for your book)

  • I was curious, how much does the printing actually cost alltogether at Lulu?

Plus, could somebody make a book just for themselves?

What fi they change their minds & decide to make the book for the public later on, can they do that?

Plus, can Lulu make flipbooks or holographic covers?

    Just wondering.

  • 1: Lulu adds about a 10% add-on for their profits.

2: Yes! Select "Keep This Project Private" when you start it.

3: Yes, but I am unaware as to how.

4: No, they cannot make holographic covers, but you could make a flip-book. They don't actually say "flip book" but you could choose a small size and complete it.

  • @Kazeboy96 Thanks for that information I really appreciate it!I am still new to the internet if you catch my drift!

  • @MischiefMakerStudio1 No problem! Hope you enjoy publishing on Lulu as it is very interesting! :)

  • Hey, who edited your book? Did you hire someone to proof read your PDF?

Cause I need someone to proof read my PDF

  • how good is the quality of the pages?

how good is the quality of pictures on their pages?

  • @greebat

Really good! If you was to get a "Digest sized book" or a "6x9 sized book" you will get the cream color pages like you see in professional novels! :) However. I heard (I am not certain) that the picture quality is not so spectacular. But it really depends on the size of the images.

  • @MrGeno86 Most of that's Lulu's fault, They want $20 just to put it out for free (no profit). That's really a major downfall with Lulu, is that it's severely over-priced. (Want a $1 profit? Make it 50 bucks more expensive!... Ok it's not that ridiculous, but that's the jist of it).

Though after getting my first one out, a couple of other publishing companies that I looked into contacted me back, so I might have a couple more options the next time around :3

  • Very cool. Microsoft Word isn't your only choice, as Open Office is a very good substitute. Right now I consider my first book junk, but it's not something I'd be embarrassed about or anything. If it weren't for finishing my first one, I never would have decided to make another (Nothing to do with the first one, but same theme); which looks much better already, in its rough draft.

Win or lose, the first book that you make is still an accomplishment.

  • I might check out a few chapters and see if I like it and I will buy it. I am also writing one as well. I just need to start it. I am also getting Micro-soft word on the 31st I will be ordering it. Today it the year 2010 December oh duh you will see when this is dated lol. What am I thinking. But anyways I will check this out. Mine will be a fantasy.

  • Which program did you use to write the book? like Open office, Microsoft word..etc...

  • Will, Open Office work? Oh yeah can you give me some tips on how to start on my novel? Do I make a outline, can you show me how to make one

  • @nikezoomflight Yes, Open Office will work, but I don't suggest checking your grammar on it (it's weak compared to Word), as for tips to start your own novel, nothing that I can really set out for you. The main tip that I can give is to set a goal for yourself: 200 pages, 500 pages (default size), whatever you want. after setting the goal, write an outline or dive into the rough draft (your choice) first, then go for your goal. It's actually fun when you finish your story. Hard work pays off.

  • The embossed letters aren't actually embossed. It's a Photoshop trick that I know (it also helps to know how gold looks under different lighting conditions ^^). The front and back covers were both created in Photoshop and I used the "pictures" as the full cover rather than their bland default covers. If you have Photoshop, I definitely suggest using it for your cover.

  • QUESTION: How did you get Embossed lettering on the cover? When you uploaded the fonts to LuLu, did you specifically tell them to emboss them? Sorry.. I don't understand b/c I've never seen anyone do that. Thanks!

  • Hey, What program did you use for your novel- Microsoft word or Open office.

  • @nikezoomflight I used word, but Open Office is just as good (no significant difference between the two), I would suggest, however, finding a PDF writer of some sort, or finding a way to get your pages to the size of the book you're making. That way, you don't have big gaps at the top. What Lulu does, is turn those pages into PDF files anyways and shrink them to fit the book, so if you sized your pages ahead of time, you're pages will look perfect.

  • How much did the book cost?

  • @limeburst1 The cost for you (the author) to purchase your own book depends on the number of pages. This base price is the cost of printing, and generally a good rule of thumb to purchase one for proofing. Keep it as a memento / use it as your "It's the first copy ever!" accomplishment, give it to a friend or family member as a present, or you can just sell it by yourself. Whatever you do with the first copy is up to you.

  • @trikitiger I actually meant how much did your book cost. I know it says $5.10 for an 84 page book, but yours is hardcover, and way more then 84 pages.

  • @trikitiger And do you have to pay when someone buys a book?

  • @limeburst1 Not at all, Lulu will pay -YOU- every quarter you've made at least $20 (within that quarter). If you don't, then they wait until you make at least $20 in revenue (this is the extra little bit you add to the book so that you get a some revenue, if you don't add something to the base price when you sell it, you're essentially giving the book away)

  • Actually, the book cover IS perfect. It looks extremely proffesional, and amazing.

  • I got a huge question to ask you or anyone that's used lulu before that would help me incredibly. Ok so my story doesn't start on page one because i want a title page first but if i have that and then page 1 straight after will it be on the left side cause that would look dumb having page one on the left side so should i insert a blank page between the title page and page one?

  • @ThMaggotUtube Lets see if I have it right... First off, your pages and what you have is completely dependent on what -you- send as a file (you can have every page with no page #s if you wanted).

For Microsoft Word, for headers/footers, there's an option called "First Page" which allows you to have a different set of headers/footers than the rest of your pages. But if you want page 1 to start at the right-page, you will need to insert the blank page (after title) yourself and get it worked out.

  • hey how many did you sell? do you have any fans? if so do you have any of those hard core fans? i.e. the adoring fan in oblivion

  • @hayharut I really didn't get that much sales, but I'm not worried about it now that I'm seeing more continuity in the second one I'm working on. This one is more child-like due to how I started it, while my second one has more continuity and maturity to it. Not only that, but the second one has a not-so-average storyline compared to my first one.

Ah well, Got to start somewhere ^^

  • @trikitiger publishing with lulu, it didnt need money did it?

  • @hayharut Nope, publishing with Lulu is all free. It helps to have some Photoshop knowledge though if you want to get a free cover that also looks decent (and not like the default ones they give you).

  • Hey man. How much does it cost to publish on LuLu? Also, how much does it cost to make a hard copy? How long does it take to get on amazon?

  • @MysteryoftheGods Publishing the book and getting it out there is completely free. You can be inept or a master and publish it completely for free (it's that easy). Buying the book yourself depends on how large the book is (number of pages). So hard cover or soft cover, it's all free. As for Amazon... I didn't really check to see how long it took. I believe it's automatic, but if not, there's an option for it. after you publish it.

  • @self --- Whoops, I mean, if you're purchasing a physical copy for yourself, it will cost the base price for printing the book (Paper ain't free!). Actually getting it out there and purchasable is free.

  • i didn't know you could get lulu to add a special front cover feel to your book. how did you get them to do that. is ur book print on demand?

  • @studio9011 There really is no "special feel" to it, like getting a different material for the cover. I wanted to give it the "feel" of being leather-bound, so I made the cover look as closely as I could to being leather-bound. I had other ideas for the cover, but the best one that I could come up with without being too flashy was the leather-bound look.

  • @solvEcho Yeah, there isn't much difference from any other premise, one of my starter ones, much of the reason why I started another one that doesn't have a similar premise to everything else. Same place, same physics (or what physics would exist there), different characters, different plot.

  • Really liked your review, and what you've done.

I'm looking to publish my novel within the next year too. Good on you, man! Published your own book! Not many people realize how stoked you can be holding your own pride and joy in hardcover. I agree, it does look like a textbook, but hey, don't judge a book by its cover! (Love the leather-bound texture!)

-Hope to read your book soon!

  • @SilverSpartan2 Thanks! :3 I'm actually a lot more stoked that it looks more like a real book now ^^ I changed some size settings and I like it even more.

  • @trikitiger I've seen other Lulu books published and your leather-bound texture caught my attention. Would that type of cover work for a paperback as well? I've been working on a story for about five years now, but just recently started thinking about publishing. So far, your video is the only one that's genuinely caught my interest.

  • hey trikitiger you should search on you tube>>> Katieblueskiesnow She talks about a book on lulu too... The Massuer Hey trikitiger she is really creative & gets really good hits... She has a music video too. She talks about other things too. But most importantly she is very easy on the eyes:):):):)

  • @windowdoorsroofstoo why do you keep saying "too!"

  • hey there triki thank you for your informative video. can i ask, have lulu paid you for the books that you sold? someone said they didn't cough up...!! ;)

  • I am not a author, but have read the book "how to write a damn good novel". i recommned to u too.

honestly, dude, if you are as boring as this in your book, no wonder you haven't sold more than a few copies, those who actually bought the book, i bet didn't even pass the first 20 pages.

i'm sorry for being bold and rude, but that's how life is.

  • @mosyemessy1988 Yeah, my life? Boring, which is why I come up with and write adventures and such because I'd rather -DO- something than the menial tasks of life. Though because that book mainly drives on a "legend" I'm doing another that doesn't touch that timeline at all, and doesn't have that completely old style of writing that I had some-odd years ago when I started drafting it. -HAVE- to start somewhere (Also why Lulu has a preview function XP)

  • @trikitiger wow, way to go dude. it was just a critisism. I'm not a troll. I just wanted to tell u that, in order to have more viewers and hence readers, u need to get a wisp of the cool attitude.

make things interesting, fun, amazing, magical and cool.

good luck on your next book. :)

  • @mosyemessy1988 Nah, I know you're not a troll. I've had so much criticism through the years online, I've just learned to take the punch, -learn from it- (really learn from it), and move on. Life's not full of sour grapes. And thanks for the luck, I hope that the next one turns out a lot better than this one (which did turn out very well)

  • @mosyemessy1988

Actually I just bought the book because of the video..he's passionate about his book so it's gatta be good. Sorry though, I cheaped out and bought the electronic version.

  • @sunnyd06able I'm reading the book. There's a lot of good about it, like the conversations between characters and how he brings you into a complete new world. The only thing I'd critique is he likes to wirte like I like to read, very to the point, action orientated and quick, but sometimes you need to slow things down and let the reader infer things ex. if there's danger, don't have the character point it out, instead set up the scene and let the reader think 'hey, that could be dangerous."

  • Isn't self publishing more expensive then traditional? You don't have to pay a publishing company to do it for you (unless self published).

  • @AButterflyDreams Actually, I found that 9 times out of 10, a publishing company wants you to pay for a book that you want published. Other self-publishing companies want a good $100 before publishing. Although, there is a considerable difference between Free (Lulu) and paying a little cash (other publishing companies).

  • Can someone please tell me why everyone suggests lulu.com!! I've read countless reviews and all said nothing but negative things. They don't even have a phone number to contact them and so many people have lost out on hundreds of dollars. Is there any other company or any other way of self publishing someone could suggest??? PLEASE HELP!

  • can you publish anything on Lulu?? what if the said material is very graphic

and disturbing? do they reject on that basis??

    thanks!

  • how is lulu when the send u profit you made? i know someone who did exactly wat you did but lulu wasn't giving her any royalties becasue there was some mix up in the system.

  • @theeeeeeeeeeeeo I'm actually not sure of their system when it comes to that yet, if I do have problems, then I'll consult the service advisers, but considering I've only gotten a few sold so far I'm not too worried about it yet (I am planning on bringing it to book stores as well, which is why I'm not worrying much about the online stuff).

  • Where is the option to design your own cover with Lulu? I can't find it everywhere... is One Piece designer it?

  • I was wondering if you had to personally make the inner title page (in the book) or does lulu do that for you?

  • @rukialala10 Everything you see -inside- of the book was personally done, anything outside of it and how it's put together is Lulu's work (However I designed the cover as much as I was allowed. Hard to do generic old-style diary when you can't customize the binding area)

  • Do you make money off this? Im interested in publishing a bookand just wanted to know from a published author. Thanks!

  • @blackwidowmollie Just like any site that allows you to sell the stuff you make (CafePress) You can add a little bit extra to the price to make a profit. Self Publishing isn't the -best- way to go, but you will definitely make something out of it.

I would rather just entertain, and the more people that are entertained with my book, the better I feel ^^

  • wait so can you make it the size of a chapter book?? cuz i was afraid it would be this big... :/

  • @WarriorXWolf It should now be a 6X9 , since I updated it after I got this version, I was only able to choose 6X9 now. Which means that I have the only copy that's 9X10

  • @trikitiger alrite thank youu :))

  • Regarding the size of the book (and you saying it's far too big for a storybook), didn't you have the option to select the dimensions of the book prior to publishing it? I'm pretty sure they gave specific dimensions (in inches) for you to choose from regarding this.

  • @FlipNautix When I originally made it, it only gave me the choice of 9X10, now, with an ISBN, I only had the choice of 6X9, which will look 10 times better.
