i always preferred their studio lps...live they were always a mess......lol....rememebr seeing them live in 1984 with black flag abnd sacharine truast in nj.
@posthumanhero i remember my brothers happy hardcore friend playing their ep on a cassette from a boom box in the backseat and i'm thinking, 'i guess they're a weird rap band'.....sacharine trust made a bigger impression on me though, the singer like an escaped mental patient grabbing the ceiling pipes as he sang -- always thought buttholes were kind of experimental music for meatheads -- they had strobes and no fire or nude girl yet.....flag did my war songs and new ones like 'rat eyes'.
@rancidsexbeast So, you're saying that rock and roll is missing LSD these days? Brother, everyone is missing LSD these days. So, why don't you make yourself useful and go learn chemistry and start making acid by the gallon. Then, meet up with me somewhere in the United States and we'll have lunch with a little Lucy on the side.
Watching Gibby carefully plunk out the rhythm line to this song with all the unselfconcious concentration of a first-year guitar student, he grins at 1:29 like "ha, I is playin the guitar all by myself!" Hard to notice with Paul doing his insane stoner antics...I love this band.
For their first show in Houston circa 83' they opened for a band I was in. We had heard of them from some friends in Austin. Total chaos, funny as hell, sonic art noise one minute then shift gears into some twisted Molly Hatchet spoken-word tribute. Made our band seem very very bland. Love them still.
are they trying to make fun of Sonic Youth on their trip to NY? LOL...At a live show GIbby once referred to the stone temple pilots as the stone pimple toilets....lol
how the hell did these guys ever get started lol... dont get me wrong, they are great,, but so different,, even for thier time.... so glad to have them tho.
Charlie don't surf!!! But I do, there ain't too many bands having fun no more stepchilds, this here failure to communicate resents levels on cognitive demands psychologically and aggregate demands economically, and by the way, if you see your mom this weekend, be sure and tell her.......!!!!!! xoxo
it was supposed to be "Tornadoes" but it turned out they just improvised and sometimes the noise can get to you .....but all you have to do is follow the notes....
As to zeramski's comment. I think most of course realize that, moreso important is beating the cat in the cage to watch the range ah faces...at other people's loss of comprehension perhaps. Humble & Weird, the early beginnings.
love the guys but the music...honestly. to you that deem this "experimental"...have you ever tried picking up an instrument and playing poorly? there's not much to it. especially when you're f-ed on acid, jeez, it's kids' play. the moral of the story is: go get a crappy guitar center guitar+amp for 100 bucks with some hi-grade blotter and you'll get tired of this noise real fast. love the interviews though! genius...
Pretty soon a thing the size of New York City had proposed itself out of the side of John's left leg and he had said "my god, the 69 nuns in the 575 7 times 5 million miles away attached to my leg have taught me that I am not a scumbag child-boy, but I am a bicycle weightless kacyborg that is in there and like I am worshiped to the sun, for the sun was there and it was a tiny brain-child that called itself "itself" and why wander? Because I wandered and there it was like a meatdog that had come
These guys are the SHIT!! Sung the worlds greatest song too (even though it was Al what wrote it). And that song is Jeesus Built My Hotrod. And Alcohol.. And that song is Hurdy Gurdy Man... And it is Jesus Was Way Cool.
I used to hang around with some girls from Trinity University in San Antonio. We were at a couple of parties where the BH Surfers were there. They just kinda stood in a corner and made fun of everyone else. We caught some of there early shows - great stuff.
Are you quoting me? I don't think it's necessary to quote me since you're comment is right under mine. You should have thought of something of your own to say.
@Gumbyrearygood Okay, I will: Butthole Surfers have no privilege on this Earth. There. Done. I can get further into it, but I'll just leave it at that. I'm such a schlemiel otherwise.
Huey Lewis and the News: Bad art. Butthole Surfers: Good art. I love Gibby. Funny guy. Although Huey probably doesn't realize it, his "music" is much more "noise" than anything the BHS's ever produced.
dropped a lot of acid+ smoked some good shit + listened to the surfers = alife changing experience it all seemed to make sence one of the best bands in the world who never used to do what the labels wanted except maybe weird revolution-paul+gibby for president
The buttholes themselves will tell you it was never about being punk; they wanted to make money, but no major label wanted to sign a bunch of terrible musicians who loved weird shit, terrible noise and acid. Eventually they got older, less weird, and Capital Records said ok. But they weren't like "fuck the system", they were just too bizarre in their youth. Good for us, eh?
TP Parter is from the Cream Corn From The Socket Of Davis E.P. released 1985; but you are right in that Cream Corn was merged with Rembrandt Pussyhorse.
wish Ta-Da was in it though. I guess either they didn't know about her yet or naked belly dancers weren't allowed on a show with 5 viewers in those days.
LOL Yeah, I think the bassist is feeling it a lot more than Gibby or Paul. But then again, he's probably a temp guy who's unaccustomed to eating a bunch of blotter and trying to produce coherent melody on live TV. Poor bastard looks like he's fixin' to freak out.
King and Theresa swear they never dropped and played; too hard to keep rhythm, they said.
