Lol people just do not understand how hard ballet is. I's not about kicking high and spinning, it's about being hyper-aware that every inch of your body is perfect symmetry, including hip turnout which is unnatural for the body and takes years to master. Not to mention you are doing all of this on pointe, a balance circumference of just a few inches. Those turns she does in the end are SO hard; dancers spend their ENTIRE lives and countless hours practice getting to that kind of level.
Robert Muraine does rule, but I think they didn't let him win because the judges knew the groovaloos were just so awesome XD. They let someone else win the solo and just let USA the group performance to win.

If a dancer wants to give joy to the audience, he must truly enjoy the dance himself. The reality is, if you do ballet, you will be constantly under pain. Yes, I am attacking ballet as an art form. Ballet dancers give up basic humanity, for some abstract social construct, like "beauty." It is not worth it. I don't appreciate it. People should stop appreciating it so that dancers stop doing ballet. The ultimate dance is that a dancer enjoys it even if no one cares to look at it.
@greatdancer Ballet is passion. Ballroom dancers endure pain as well while under going training, you know, with all the leg work and the heels. If a dancer is passionate about what he/she is dancing then he/she must love what they do if they are willing to continue. Any formally trained dancer will have to go through pain to perfect each move.
@demolitionxxvampire The mental and physical state of most top ballet dancers is miserable. There is some craze inside this thing. People would have to recognize that it is a social problem, in the process of pursuing some social constructs "passion" and "beauty", destroying basic humanity, like a dancer's well being. It gets to a point that it needs to be regulated by legislation.
Just for the record, I dance a lot myself. I have shoe cushion and protection so that I don't feel any pain.
@greatdancer For the record, Ballet dancers have pads and cushions as well and the pointe shoe has a toe box, you don't actually stand on your toes alone. Basic humanity? Ballet, like any other form of ballroom for example, has rules in posture. I have a friend who is a plus sized dancer, a plus sized ballet dancer.
I'm sorry, I just read your comment... And really? Do ballet, then talk.
Ballet dancers do ballet because they LOVE it. Not because they think that if they do ballet they'll be beautiful. Not all of us die of pain and starve ourselves. I've been dancing my entire life, and the worst I've ever gotten was a blister. Yeah, you get sore from working.. But honestly, which dancer doesn't? If you don't get sore, you're not working hard enough.
the rankings were right. but if you say that Robert does the same moves, look at ballet, especially the pointe there a lot of the same moves repeated but if you have good technique no one pays attention to that. as a dancer who's forte is hip hop and is learning modern and jazz i think Russia should have won, but i love the India performance she was spectacular.
This contest is completely retarded. They might as well call it "Who's Got the Best Culture?" Ballet dancers should compete with ballet dancers. Poppers should compete with poppers. Mixing it all up just turns it into a big greasy prison fight. I've got an idea for a new contest! Let's see the LA Lakers play the Indianapolis Colts in a game of badminton.
Everyone is saying that Robert Muraine deserve to be third because he keeps on doing the same moves. Yea that is rite but its really hard doing the moves. He deserves to be second. He is better than India.
The ballerina was by far the best as she portrayed the most skill!! I consider ballet to be a form of contemporary torture (that and 7 inch heels...) and Maria did it with such elegance and made it actually look easy!
I do agree with the ranking as well. But as for ballet, no one realizes how HARD it is until you have done it yourself. It takes EXTREME strength and balance to be able to even keep yourself aligned, let alone on POINTE.
As for the "hotness", that is not the point of the dance. Do some research on don Quixote. She performed it flawlessly and with much expression. MUCH better than the USA popper. Why was he even in the finale??
Comparing to other ballet performance, it is not the best one. If it is spanish style of ballet, the hotness is not there. The instrument in her hands seemed not really help. For the Indian one, her dance seemed merge with the music. I know the training of the Indian dance is not as difficult as ballet. However, if taking who can really dance well with the music, it was the Indian Dancer.
The Russian girls dance was Spanish in style because it's from Don Quixote...trust me it's not as easy as it looks. The pique turns alone at the end are very challenging.
.,i'm not a ballet dancer but i'm a dancer myself and i took a little ballet lesson and i tell you its not as easy as u think and to be honest the popping guy of usa doesn't even deserve to be on the finals... the australian guy should be the one in the finals not him!!!
i agree with vanillabean and everyone else who supports ballet. I am a ballerina too, and indeed, it takes a lot of time and effort to put such art on stage. The three had unique styles but the one thing that stands out is the technicality of the routine and Russia had shown it.
robert muraine was the best here. By a mile. the other routines could have been performed by other talented dancers of those genres and lacked real individuality.
culture should be the platform for a solo routine- the foundation it arises out of, the rest should come from the dancer.
only muraine had the talent to take a style and then make his own.
We finally have ballet on tv other than pbs! yes! Everybody underestimates the stamina, control, flexibility, and mental ability that all ballet dancers have! Go Maria!
I have tried several times to find the beauty everyone sees in ballet. I am not in anyway saying it is "bad" or "easy" or "less-than". I just can not or have YET to enjoy it.
One way to learn to appreciate the effort is by trying it yourself. Only someone who has actually performed that variation understands that it takes years of daily and constant training to be able to do it right.

Its is totaly unfair. I think that robert muraine should have won. Do any one can do what he did a flip in the air and drop with the legs in that position. what maria did was beautiful but any girl who is in ballet can do it. In case of india that footwork is impressive but i have seen a spanish girl do it just like that.
In opinion it doesn't matter whether others can do it as well or not.....it is about the performence each of them is doin on stage........And i think the judgement is totally right though i'm a mad fan of amrapali!!!
okay, not every girl can do what Maria can do. You obviously know nothing about ballet. She has some crazy technique and great stage presence. Ballet is so much harder than every one thinks. People under estimate it. So unless you actually know how hard ballet is I would stop talking now.
I agree. That dude, had me mesmerized- I didnt like the song, and usually dont like that particular type of "dance" BUT I never once blinked. He was a phenom.
I think the Indian girl shud have won, those steps looked hard but very interesting to watch...I bet it is hard to do those footwork. The ballet was good but boring...India should have been first, Russia second and whoever could take the third place...
dats so unfair!! amrapalli danced so well!! D dance was so technical too! and she included western rap in her kathak song. it was so versatile. too bad dat dey cud not recognize true talent!!
i think india, i don't know how to spell her name, was the best........
indian dancing is unique and really great understanding about every hand and facial expression is required.........its not like meaningless regular dancing like other 2 performance........
judges obviously r not aware of indian classical dance
MR.FANTASTIC SHOULD HAVE WON!!! I bet nobody can do things like him!
I have to say India was good but what's with the ballet?I'm not sure if that's a skilled ballet or anything but....not really entertaining that's what I'd say.
ya I thought technically the Indian dance had much more to offer & req more energy. I took ballet & am trained in classical Indian dance Indian dance is MUCH more diff requires balance, speed & power. U have to hit the floor hard w/ ur feet to get the bells to sound & u have to be right on beat. Your hands and feet have to be coordinated all the while using your face, eyes and eyebrows to express the dance. Ballet isnt close. The contortionist was there bec this is an American show, he sucked.
The american guy was on so you think you can dance. He didn't get very far cause all he's doing is contorting, a lot of ppl don't consider that dancing. It's for sure an amazing skill and entertaining but I dunno about technical skill in terms of what considers dance. I dunno. I guess I would need to learn all the dances of the world and then decide what is easy and hard. Kind of difficult to compare all these different dances, the technical skill required for each seems so different no?
omg if they just get some1 from japan called da yoshi they will be both finished but they got robert muarine who killed both of them girls idc if u think he sucks u cant if do what he does so stfu
there is no song, the first song was a traditonal Ganesh dance that is commonly used in Kathak and the second one is just another dance that is used in Kathak. the second music is just a bunch of beats played on the tubla, and if you listen carefully, you can hear the sarangi, keyboard, flute, and most of the other major insturments in kathak.
Its two songs, both of which are from the movie "American Blend". The first one is called "Kathak (Indian Classical)" and the second one is called "Kathak Rap" =]
i have to say India was amazing considering i have learned classical dance for 12 years but honestly i think Russia deserved the first place and India definitely deserved second place.
India was incredible; however, speaking as someone who took ballet for 8 years, the Russian soloist was amazing. Her pique turns were icredible and VERY artistic (as it that's a different way to prep for a pique turn and looks very challenging)
She deserved to win this competition, but she is not really that fantastic of a ballerina. For real professionalism and enthusiasm, you need to take a look at Zakharova and Vishneva.
