  • My audition piece :) weird this incorporates the monologue and the song I'm doing

  • Wow I'm amazed that they were able to hide her pregnancy so well...

  • 33 people have never heard the bells, birds , music or love.

  • b[lly joel

  • Auditioning for Music Man on friday with my gf! :)

  • How could someone possibly dislike this?

  • @aftonhalters Meredith Wilson, the man who made The Music Man, would not let this movie be done unless Robert Preston was the lead, since he had originated the role on stage.

  • I love this song so much. And this movie.

  • im singing this song for a valintine banquet and i love this version!! :)

  • Great scene from a great movie!!!

  • I just really want to incorporate this video to my website, but I can't. I am so frustrated.

  • hmmmmmmmm good but paul mccartney is better

  • @ryandeakin5878 yea and sex is better than apple juice

    what is your point?

  • In the interview with Shirley Jones, she tells how this scene was filmed towards the end of production. She was near full term with her son! These two were perfect for this film. Watch her interview.

  • Her facial expressions drive me insane. They are horrible.

  • I want this song played at my wedding!

  • the beatles did a cover of this. ehehe.

  • Awesome song....terrible voice

  • This just kills me every time.

  • @hrose997

I know you commented last month but those notes are quiet easy if you're a soprano...but if you're like an alto then yeah those would be wicked high..

not to sound cocky but I can hit all the notes and I'm really happy about that :)

oh and thanks for the video :)

  • He was 44, she was 28. I hate when they cast an old guy with someone he probably could not get otherwise. Unless she's a gold digger :) Paint Your Wagon just popped into my head ! Yuckie old Lee Marvin & Jean Seberg. Poor Jean .. :( Clint made up for that though I think :)

  • @aftonhalters Harold Hill is SUPPOSED to be a lot older than Marian. He's around 40-42, and she's supposed to be 26. Well Preston at the time of the filming was 42, Jones about 26-27. perfect.

  • @aftonhalters My grandmother says the same. Preston was too old for the movie.

  • this version strikes me as so much more sincere than the kristin chenoweth version. shirley jones looks genuinely in love... plus i like her voice more

  • @zenofskittles Well, Shirley Jones was singing to Robert Preston. Who WOULDN'T look genuinely in love? Chenoweth was singing to Matthew Broderick, no comparison. Plus for some reason the key was lowered.

  • @thedogs2 haha yeah, true.

  • Comment removed

  • @zenofskittles EVERY Baby Boomer girl wanted to be Shirley Jones on the footbridge, with Robert Preston looking at US that way, and being kissed by him, OMG. Baby Boomer boys, fot their part, all felt Shirley was "yummy." So true.

  • @thedogs2 haha yeah they definitely are a super attractive pair!

  • We are singing this at my school too! I got called for a call back and am pretty sure I am gonna get Marian too!:)

  • This movie is the biggest obstacle in the way of my bachelor's degree. I cant stop watching it. SO GOOD!!!!!

  • My schools doing the music man for our spring musical! I hate to sound cocky but I think I'm going to get marian :)

  • gotta sing this for a class. wish my luck guys!

  • Wow-serious chemistry and great acting with these 2. Good looking couple.

  • goosebump city

  • WOW. Shirley Jones was soooo pretty, and had a good voice, too.

  • Oh my god how is anyone supposed to hit those high notes?! They are inhuman. Im supposed to audition with this song for the school musical and there is no way im gonna b able to hit those notes. Thanks a lot Shirley Jones:)

  • i think the beatles version is better. its more upbeat and happier

  • This gal knocks it out the park. Kristen Chenoweth eat your heart out.

  • She was always such a class act, and Robert Preston was perfect for that role :)

  • Bloody hell, at least she doesn't go as high as Kristin, or I fear I'll never be able to sing this song! And I'm auditioning to play Marian next week! D=

  • fabulous, oh! shirley fantastic.

  • This song from the broadway play : was released the day I was born:)

  • i heard the original version for the first time. very beautiful.

  • @thedogs2 Thanks! I sure will! :)

  • She was actually pregnant while they were filming this movie. If you look real close, you can see a little bit of a bump, but you really have to know what you're looking for; they did a real good job hiding it beneath corsets and frills.

  • The Music Man my favorite of all time. So mant great songs.

  • So sweet!

  • i admit that i've loved the beatles version and it was the first i've heard but this is wonderful,i wish the world would like it seems in this video.

  • Notice the surprised look on Robert Preston's face (he looks to the sky) after he kissed Shirley Jones? She didn't tell anyone she was pregnant and the baby kicked Mr. Preston after the kiss!!! Neat!!!!

  • This song is awesome! I can see why the Beatles cover it.

  • Ah... I recently got casted for Harold in this musical at my high school, and I'm excited about it. My classmate who is playing Marian is a beautiful young woman, who is very theatrically and vocally talented, but I'm not quite sure that she's had her first kiss yet... But as long as she would be ok with it, I'm looking forward to being one of her first kisses, and I think that that'd be wonderful. :) But we're all hoping to put on a great show! Wish us luck, YouTubers!

  • @Skyraevre Good luck!!! :D

  • @PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan Thanks a lot! :)

  • @Skyraevre Good luck to you. I'm sure you'll have a blast! Let us know how it turns out.

  • @Skyraevre I'm afraid that honor will go to Charlie Cowell.

  • @StShamus Ahaha, but that is not true. 'Marian' and I practiced our kiss scenes 'for real' before he practiced his with her. She.. Had her mouth open a little bit on the first one, and she had warned me beforehand that she 'wouldn't be good at it' haha. But for her first kiss(es), she held her demeanor very well! Funny Fact #1: Her and the girl who played Eulalie MacKecknie Shinn are very good friends. Funny Fact #2: I've been dating that girl who played Eulalie, and I played Harold Hill. :P

  • Wish you all the luck in the world! And please record the performance and upload it on YT. :)

  • In old movies, the male lead is always like 50. What's the deal. Did they not have handsome young dudes in the 50s and 60s?

  • @cellularautomata older men younger woman, always was and always will be the fantasy (or reality) I'm 55 and I'd go for Marion any time.... How about Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady..... I'll save that one 'till I'm even older.........

  • @jrjacobsil Marion's 30... And he doesn't look too much older....

  • I realize now that I never knew what real love was till I met you. For that I will always be greatful.

  • LOVE this movie--and the musical its based on. Sort of an American time piece--the sentiment and naivite of it---a time never to come again!! And the immortal songs--like this--reflect that and so much more. I feel like eating a hot fudge sundae or corn on the cob while watching it.

  • She was beautiful.

  • @Mike6E She still is.

  • i will NEVER stop loving this song. i played Marian at my high school recently and had the time of my life. the show and this song will always be so close to my heart :)

  • I can watch this movie a thousand times.

  • @utahaztec So can I.

  • Can't hear it...

  • I LOVE THE DRESS SHE IS WEARING

  • When Preston kissed Shirley on the bridge he found out she was pregnant with her son Patrick. She kept it secret during filming of the movie. Only the director knew.

  • 26 people never heard the bells ringing.

  • Shirley Jones is exceptionally talented but to be completely honest I think that I prefer the remake simply because these two don't have quite the same chemistry of Matthew and Kristen. They both made the movies their own but my preferance is probably the remake.

  • All they're missing now is a Big Eastern Iowa Buck!

  • Love the Music Man. Was in Marching Band in High School and College (CSUS). Doug Matley

  • True love... when she wants him to leave so he'd be safe... and he stays to be with her <3

  • Wow,nice pipe's Mrs. Partridge! :)

  • Damn, everything The Beatles sing is great... even if it is not from there own.

  • Beatlemania, first done as a musical on Broadway in 1957 with Robert Preston than as a movie in 1962. The Beatles came out with it in the same year on "Meet The Beatles."

  • the music man made this first before The Beatles right??

  • @thebeatlemania182 The Beatles recorded this for their first album (With the Beatles, UK; Meet the Beatles, US) a year after the movie came out.

  • You know she was pregnant during this scene, which probably heightened her already Hollywood caliber beauty (most pregnant women get a lil boost from hormonal activity--fully hair/lips, a glow)

  • Harold Hill is such a bullshitter, he's so awesome!

  • If she'd decided to sing opera instead of going to Hollywood, Shirley would have given Eleanor Steber a run for her money.

  • @ CatapultYourMom: Just like the other things they covered in the early days "We need stuff to fill this album and with the right arrangement it can work wonders".

  • Dude, I never realized how much of a hottie Shirley Jones was!

  • The wedding singer

  • What were The Beatles thinking when they covered syrup like this?

  • @CatapultYourMom A great songwriter recognizes a great song. Those who can't are merely wanabes.

  • Oh Jesus... THIS. IS. AMAZING. Nuff' said.

  • hell yeah this look wayy better than HD

  • there just aren't voices like that anymore...

  • funnily enough, Shirley Jones was pregnant during the filming of this, and VERY pregnant during this song, but they had her wear a special corset (poor kid!!), and she can STILL sing like this. It's amazing!

  • lets go back to those great days!what we got now 'the only way is essex!'

  • OMG!!! he is soo much older!!!!!

  • Shirley Jones has a voice that is soo true and honest, sooo professional!! Love to hear her singing this even if I am feeling rather heart broken! :(

  • ummm, if my girl sang me a song like that i'm pretty sure i'd pick her up and carry her away, not scurry away when a fat man through a rock at me

  • Would love to hear Shirley Jones and Paul McCartney does this song as a duet!

  • Thank you for high quality.

  • I wonder how many men of the Beatles' era remember this, if they've ever seen it.

  • I really wish I could sing :-(

  • I personally that The Beatles and The Music Man is both GREAT! We can not argue about this because it is to different to compare: in this it is a girl singing, she sings it a different key, different accompaniment. Then The Beatles: Paul sang it in a lower key, and was not the same accompaniment. But , really my perception is maybe not completely correct, it is your choice really. Don't get me wrong though. . . Paulie's version of this was a heart melting, honey comb dew dripping love of sound.

  • Thumbs up if it would scare the shit out of you if your girl started singing like that XD lol

  • Comment removed

  • Shirley sings it with much more feeling than the Beatles

  • @llabful AND....WHO'S SHIRLEY

  • @llabful AND....WHO'S SHIRLEY???

  • Is it healthy that they bound her stomach in that well if she was that pregnant? Holy cow you can't even tell she's prego!

  • BEATLES ARE BETTER LIKE 1000000000 TIMES! <3

  • we did this play at our school i was mrs.paroo

  • @litenon we just finished this show on March 26 and I was Mrs. Paroo too.

  • Comment removed

  • The beatles version is so different to this so they're hard to compare as this is a musical but i personally prefer paul mcCartney's version on with the beatles

  • Charlie Cowell made 26 accounts to dislike this video. LOLS

  • @samlowry5611 Can you blame him? That little dried up man-hungry doxy, round-heel fiz gig–

    :p

  • I remember hearing that she was 6 months pregnant and Robert Preston could feel the baby kick when he hugged her.

What a beauty she is - and one of the best voices - better than Julie Andrews!

  • @MorganHillChristine - No, she's phenomenal, but no one beats Julie. Andrews has a clarity that even Shirley Jones doesn't have. Was she really six months pregnant? She doesn't look like she is.

  • @TheLadyWhoLunches According to Shirley, they both had their arms around each other, and were holding each other in a very tight embrace, had their eyes closed, and were really into it. Preston leaned in for the kiss, landed it, and everything was going wonderfully... until Patrick kicked him in the gut right in the middle of that beautiful clinch!!! Shirley says Preston's eyes "fflew open," he "stepped back," and startled. said "What the hell was THAT? ROTFLMAO!!!

  • @thedogs2 That's absolutely hysterical!!!! I wonder if they still have the recording...

  • @TheLadyWhoLunches Deat God, wouldn't that be hysterical? Preston NEVER forgot it, and years later when Patrick intorduced himnself to him, Pres took a several steps back and said, "we've met."

  • @thedogs2 That's so funny!!!! I wonder what Patrick thought.

  • @TheLadyWhoLunches Patrick, Shirley, and especially Preston were all roaring with laughter over the whole absurd situation. Pres did not know Shirley was pregnant, and neither did anyone else except the director, lol. Imagine his shock when he felt a kick on the footbridge.

  • @thedogs2 Oh, G-d. That makes it even funnier!!!!

  • @TheLadyWhoLunches Everytime Shirley repeats that story, the audience ROARS with laughter, still after all these years. Oh well, Preston was known to love jokes, and this must have been one of the funniest EVER.

  • She really had to be a great actress because he's so UGLY! he he he

  • @ivanosito really? i always thought he was kind of a stud! i mean, considering how old he is... er, was.

  • Ahhh I'm trying out for Marion on Monday!!!!!! I'm scared! Well, at least we don't have to kiss. Because I have a feeling Harold is going to be a really annoying person!

  • U can't tell that she's preggo unless u look 4 it

  • the hight note for my is a high G! ah!!

  • Omfg!! i <3 this song .Were actually doing this song forthis years play and im going to try to get marians part and we have to sing this song for try outs im scared but exctied evry1 says ill get it because ive gotten main roles before but her high notes hurt my voice , oh and we actually have to kiss! ah!

  • alright, i LOVE both versions of this movie, but i'm REALLY hard-pressed to say who sings this better: kristin or shirley. i think kristin might actually go an octave higher, or maybe i'm imaging things?

  • @scgtlp When Kristin sings it, her first note in the song is D#. And then there's a key change. And when she sings with Matthew, her first note is G. And when she hit's that high note (that she does so well), its a high Bb. When Shirley sings it, she starts on F#. There is no key change. And her high note is just an F# up the octave. So, the two versions are in totally different keys. Kristin and Shirley are both incredibly amazing and Im in love with them both and both versions of the movie. :D

  • Shirley Jones was such a peach!

  • oh my god!!! I never this since I was 9 O_O

I loved Music Man since I saw this movie at 9 years old <3

I can't believe I forgot how she sang beautifully <3

  • It would have been better with Paul McCartney as the music man because he already was.

  • Shirley Jones won two Academy Awards, sang like a bird and was gorgeous. Robert Preston has never been surpassed. The Beatles (and don't reply) really did not sing well. They had some wonderful songs and were of a time but others did their songs better than them. Ouch!!

  • sigh

  • beatles covered this song perfectly and then some!

  • okay… Beatles do this much much better…

  • I think I like the 2003 remake better. it was more fun loving and the main characters had more chemistry.

  • @TheDisneyFan111 Everything's easier when your leading lady isn't secretly pregnant! As it is I'm amazed Shirley Jones was able to sing and dance the way she did while pregnant.

  • @ember514 yeah i was surprised when they said it behind the scenes. that's why she was wearing that orange dress in the one scene and this dress now. she was wearing corsets and frills underneath to conceal the baby.

  • @HaleyRawksYourSawks yea I'm not tellin... sorry

  • Solid gold...why can't somebody write a song like that today?

  • Paul McCartney, you somehow, and I mean SOMEHOW managed to do this song some justice =)

  • So cute....this is so much fun to perform

  • EEEEgods!

  • It was called "Technicolor," and they did a very nice job ...

  • I have an audition for this next week.... I can't do that >_<

  • Robert Preston's performance made it impossible for anyone, including Mathew Broderick, to follow him. This happens a lot -- how a performer "just fits."

Saw him on Broadway. Can't be equaled.

  • actually it would be bad i could see Quinn singing this to Sam

  • I like Paul McCartneys version better.

  • @CoIeStones Yeah I almost NEVER say this about songs from musicals but The Beatles cover is better.

  • @cookidoh093 I'm sorry but I hope Glee doesn't Touch this song at all, not after what they did to "It's My Life"

  • Love this muscial.....we did it in College.....it was fun time.

  • I have to sing this song for my vocal recital :p It's really beautiful...I'm just worried about that high note :/

  • ahhhh! my favorite band sings a song from my favorite musical! ahhhh! the beatles! the music man! LOVE

  • 23 people never heard them ringing.

  • 3:57. There are a lot of things you don't know about me. For a start I'm 60 years older than you!

  • I don't understand AT ALL how the quality of film was so great back then... it's like...even better than today almost..

  • Comment removed

  • @itsconnorjon I think it 's because they ran out of the original material they used for color films, not sure about that though

  • @itsconnorjon That's because it's actual film, not digital. So it's technically more realistic.

  • @itsconnorjon That's because it was done in analog. Digital will never be able to match the quality of analog either on video or (most especially) audio.

  • @itsconnorjon It was restored. That is now how it was back then. I had a non-restored version when I watched it

  • @itsconnorjon Kodak Film perhaps? I agree with you tho 100%
