We also know what a "boot" is, but we wear them on our feet. Cultural differences.

@TheKnuckleneckAs a Brit that lives in the USA I'm wise to the fact that Americans are intelligent enough to recognise the difference between sorcerers and philosophers, but there's no denying the fact that the producers of the film decided to change the title because they didn't believe this to be the case. At the end of the day J K Rowling chose that title for a reason, the words have two different meanings and they should have kept to the original instead of patronising an entire nation.

@jessie05able Well, it IS Hollywood...they've made BILLIONS patronizing an entire nation. After reading the book, it's pretty obvious what the item in question is. Aside from the obvious "publisher under-estimates Americans" explanation, you have to admit, based on the cultural definitions, "sorcerer" is more menacing and intriguing than "philosopher". I mean, would we rather see Socrates or Kierkegaard with a rock, or a cloaked, shadowy, magical figure with an artifact of untold power?

Then how could we be so sure that it isn't actually real and don't say "because we never saw it" because in the stories when muggles see magic, the ministry modifies and erases their memories. I just think of Harry Potter like this all the time wondering whether it is real or not............
