Odd, I've done sub 2:00's in my Lotus Exige S using the same configuration and I know folks that have run 2:00 flat in a normally aspirated Exige -- but after watching how the Lotus driver almost stalled it off the line, I have my doubts about the driver.
Overall, the ZR1 is an awesome track car and daily driver, but brake pads and tire replacements make considerably more expensive to track than the Lotus.
you must be talking about a different video bc i saw no ZR1 here, just a z06 which doesnt have the expensive carbon brakes, or all carbon fiber of the zr1 and costs about half. no it doesnt have little Toyota corolla tires or brakes like the lotus but it's well worth the difference in speed
sounds like the tires i had on my 96 beretta lol. now if the brakes are really from a viper and gtr than robainscough is even more crazy than i thought, those will cost atleast as much as the z06 if not more. so the cost difference if next to none considering mods to lotus' are not cheap when compared to the vette
Why not test the Exige S240 with the cup brakes? It would've still about the same as a Z06, and been a little quicker to compensate for its straight line deficiency. With it, this would've been a more balanced comparison. I'm pretty sure the results would've been a little different. I'm sorry, I just think that the Exige deserved more than what it was given. Optional power windows...
i know but i mean cmon, i know pound for pound the porsche engine is better in terms of efficiency, but damn man, it had to make up for 2 less cylinders, and 3.4l of displacement. the fact it was that close with that difference is amazing. the exige, well its a fun car but cmon thats just too much of an underdog.

The 997 GT3 costs a lot because you americans, need to import it ! It's like for us europeans, for the Z06. The Z06 costs about 90 000 € in Europe (more than 122 900 $ !!!). I Got mine for 65 000 € (88 750 $), with 10 000 kms. The vette is just like a Supercar in Europe, even if it's cheaper than Porsche or Ferrari, it has a price ! actually the latest Corvette has some pretty good handling... the main reason why it's so cheap is because of the cheap ass interiour... Why the Prosche is so expensive? light weight materials... the essential hardware is pretty similar is price/quality. Now I'm not saying that the Porsche is bad (on the contrary), I'm just explaining to you why the Vette is 40 grand cheaper then the Porsche ;)

I used to think that power was everything till i got my 1980 911SC this year - only has 180HP but it can still spank just about any other car(atleast that i've raced) up to model year 2000. - - even a camaro SS w/ the v8(cant remember its year lol) you cant beat german engineering. dont get me wrong i love vettes but there is just no comparison once you drive a 911.
The problem with contemporary car fanatics who call themselves "enthusiasts" is that they always bring the price factor into the equation. Price is not always proportional to power and speed. I guess it's an age thing because when I was 16-18, I too use to think that power is everything. As we mature, we all (or at least most of us level-headed enthusiasts) begin to think outside the box and see pass the hp figure.
Think about it logically; is there anybody naive enough to actually think that any one particular GT3 owner does not know about the Z06's existence? Of course they do. They know perfectly well that for significantly less money, they could have bought a more powerful car, but didn't.
And that's exactly the issue at hand; there is absolutely more to a car than straight line acceleration. People always talk power-for-dollar, but little do they realize that the Corvette costs much more in Europe than it does over here in the States. The difference between a 997 GT3 and Z06 in most European countries is a mere $10,000 to $20,000 (American dollars).
^^^^Like you said, the comparison is way off. The 997 GT3 would wipe the floor with the Vette in the handling department. And again, the Vette would destroy the GT3 in a good old drag race. IMO, those guys did not push the 997 to its limits. Handling and the overall balance is what makes the Porsche a Porsche. It is hands down a car that is better suited for the track. And no, "track" does not mean 1/4 mile drag strip. Also, a lot of these "races" come down to who's the better driver.

I dont care if the 911 has a turbo - - its still weaker in power. im sure the gt3 had a slower track time because you have to drive a rear engined car differently than a front engine car. different balance, handling characteristics, things like that. Well said, except that the 911 in the video is a GT3 and it has no turbo. It is an NA flat 6 generating 415 hp, which it does from a mere 3.6 L motor. That in my book is impressive. The Corvette's LS7 motor is twice as big for crying out loud (literally). It's a 7.0 Liter, which makes roughly 80 hp more. That does not impress me as much, even though I personally like the Z06.
@Playlife69 The Vette has a pushrod engine which is lighter and smaller per liter of displacement, allowing a "larger" engine for the same weight. I'm not saying the Vette's engine is lighter than the GT3's, just that double overhead cams add size and mass to the engine. The Vette uses advanced materials in its construction, has more torque, is more reliable and easier to maintain, delivers better gas mileage, and doesn't have to rev to the sky to get the car moving... good in its own right.
@stephenmtnbay the vettes is capable of 700hp at the crank gm unlike europen car companys take into consideration that the consumer is not gona want to have to invest thousands in maintenance thats why they use more displacement and not a higher reving engine for example ferraris and lmabos have to have there clutches replaced around 20k miles idk bout u but for that price i want something thats gona last

quatroportte, have u heard of power to weight ratio? the turbo is 4OO pounds heavier than GT3, which makes it slower on the racetrack, and the GT3's suspention is stiffer and more useful on a track than turbo's. ur right the ZO6 won because it has more power, but Turbo would have lost too. Now GT2 would deffinitly win.

I have raced the 997 turbo, seen it race modified M5's (that was beaten by stock Z06)....Those turbos are great cars..but not nearly as fast as you think! I like both cars actually and I have owned both too and since I have always been a corvette owner I will always defend the corvettes more or other American cars as well more than European cars. If you want to compare a turbo porche with a corvette then compare it with a turbo charged or a s/c vette as well. LOL funny thing is a POrche needs a turbo to keep up with the vettes.

alright you got me.. it's an option.. regardless my point is the elise and exige are stripped down race cars with little to no amenaties.. you have a thin peice of sheet metal between you and the pavement. Which is an awesome feeling but it's further away from a luxery sports car than any of it's competators..
It is not cramped inside I'm 6'0" and 200 lbs and I'm perfectly comfortable inside. In fact I have to pull the seat all the way forward to fully depress the clutch.
It is not extremely noisy. About 50 decibels and only above 6k rpms at that.
Also, seems worth mentioning that they used a base model Exige, against the top of the line Corvette and a 911 GT3.

So you got the advantage of 310 cubic inches of engine and all you can come up with is a piddly 0.4 sec. from 0-60. Four tenths?!?!? and you say the lotus isn't fast.
I drove an exige for an hour at sebring recently. It handled like a dream and its an awesome car. But youre either high or a liar, I didnt even have room to breathe in the fucking car. Im 5'10'' and only 150lbs and had some trouble getting in the car. All the time people claim lotus' are rocket ships and that they can be daily driven, but I didnt see that this weekend. The car died before 100 mph. And with a helmet on I was hunched over and extremely uncomfortable the entire driving session.
Took some practice to learn how to get in and out. always make sure the seat is forward.
With seat back, put your right foot in and slide your tail over the hump and drop in. My car is an 05 Elise. I've never worn a helmet in my car but I'd think the prefered method would be to "REMOVE THE TOP".

Oh I enjoyed getting in and out it was like a workout. The car isnt slow Ill say that, but I got walked hard on the back straight of sebring by the new M3, carrera, and ISF.
There was one more thing that bothered me. After 10 minutes I couldnt figure out how to change the station on the radio :(.
When I went to shift and or check if the car was in neutral it seemed as if the entire drivetrain was shaking. Maybe it was just my car, or maybe you have an explaination for it.
The Viper ACR also seems like a strong track contender.

Lotus cost much less than Zo6 and can be highly modified dollar for dollar.
There is no need to upgrade brakes unless severe tracking is done regularly. Pads are not too high aftermarket. About $350 per set at dealer.
For those of us who drive Lotus's and Corvettes it aint that big of a deal.

Odd, I've done sub 2:00's in my Lotus Exige S using the same configuration and I know folks that have run 2:00 flat in a normally aspirated Exige -- but after watching how the Lotus driver almost stalled it off the line, I have my doubts about the driver.
Overall, the ZR1 is an awesome track car and daily driver, but brake pads and tire replacements make considerably more expensive to track than the Lotus.

you must be talking about a different video bc i saw no ZR1 here, just a z06 which doesnt have the expensive carbon brakes, or all carbon fiber of the zr1 and costs about half. no it doesnt have little Toyota corolla tires or brakes like the lotus but it's well worth the difference in speed

The rear brakes are off a Dodge Viper and the front sets are the rear from a GTR.
The tires are Yokohama Advan Neova LTS, 195/45zr16 front and 225/45zr17 rear stock with sport pack.
We like the corvette. However, I personally greatly appreciate that Lotus does more with significantly less.
Not to mention the Lotus is far more fun to drive.
Perhaps you should try one.

sounds like the tires i had on my 96 beretta lol. now if the brakes are really from a viper and gtr than robainscough is even more crazy than i thought, those will cost atleast as much as the z06 if not more. so the cost difference if next to none considering mods to lotus' are not cheap when compared to the vette

Why not test the Exige S240 with the cup brakes? It would've still about the same as a Z06, and been a little quicker to compensate for its straight line deficiency. With it, this would've been a more balanced comparison. I'm pretty sure the results would've been a little different. I'm sorry, I just think that the Exige deserved more than what it was given. Optional power windows...

i know but i mean cmon, i know pound for pound the porsche engine is better in terms of efficiency, but damn man, it had to make up for 2 less cylinders, and 3.4l of displacement. the fact it was that close with that difference is amazing. the exige, well its a fun car but cmon thats just too much of an underdog.
That porsche flat six is a masterpiece though.

The 997 GT3 costs a lot because you americans, need to import it ! It's like for us europeans, for the Z06. The Z06 costs about 90 000 € in Europe (more than 122 900 $ !!!). I Got mine for 65 000 € (88 750 $), with 10 000 kms. The vette is just like a Supercar in Europe, even if it's cheaper than Porsche or Ferrari, it has a price ! actually the latest Corvette has some pretty good handling... the main reason why it's so cheap is because of the cheap ass interiour... Why the Prosche is so expensive? light weight materials... the essential hardware is pretty similar is price/quality. Now I'm not saying that the Porsche is bad (on the contrary), I'm just explaining to you why the Vette is 40 grand cheaper then the Porsche ;)
I myself would prefer the Exige as a track car though, it's relativly cheap and great fun to drive :)

I used to think that power was everything till i got my 1980 911SC this year - only has 180HP but it can still spank just about any other car(atleast that i've raced) up to model year 2000. - - even a camaro SS w/ the v8(cant remember its year lol) you cant beat german engineering. dont get me wrong i love vettes but there is just no comparison once you drive a 911.

The problem with contemporary car fanatics who call themselves "enthusiasts" is that they always bring the price factor into the equation. Price is not always proportional to power and speed. I guess it's an age thing because when I was 16-18, I too use to think that power is everything. As we mature, we all (or at least most of us level-headed enthusiasts) begin to think outside the box and see pass the hp figure.

People always talk power-for-dollar, but little do they realize that the Corvette costs much more in Europe than it does over here in the States. The difference between a 997 GT3 and Z06 in most European countries is a mere $10,000 to $20,000 (American dollars).

^^^^Like you said, the comparison is way off. The 997 GT3 would wipe the floor with the Vette in the handling department. And again, the Vette would destroy the GT3 in a good old drag race. IMO, those guys did not push the 997 to its limits. Handling and the overall balance is what makes the Porsche a Porsche. It is hands down a car that is better suited for the track. And no, "track" does not mean 1/4 mile drag strip. Also, a lot of these "races" come down to who's the better driver.

Well said, except that the 911 in the video is a GT3 and it has no turbo. It is an NA flat 6 generating 415 hp, which it does from a mere 3.6 L motor. That in my book is impressive. The Corvette's LS7 motor is twice as big for crying out loud (literally). It's a 7.0 Liter, which makes roughly 80 hp more. That does not impress me as much, even though I personally like the Z06.

@Playlife69 The Vette has a pushrod engine which is lighter and smaller per liter of displacement, allowing a "larger" engine for the same weight. I'm not saying the Vette's engine is lighter than the GT3's, just that double overhead cams add size and mass to the engine. The Vette uses advanced materials in its construction, has more torque, is more reliable and easier to maintain, delivers better gas mileage, and doesn't have to rev to the sky to get the car moving... good in its own right.

I like both cars actually and I have owned both too and since I have always been a corvette owner I will always defend the corvettes more or other American cars as well more than European cars. If you want to compare a turbo porche with a corvette then compare it with a turbo charged or a s/c vette as well. LOL funny thing is a POrche needs a turbo to keep up with the vettes.

:Actually z06/GT3 are same class that's why: same weight, RWD, N/A motor... 911 does have a small engine, thus low torque 299 vs 470; but it is x2 more advanced. Vette does not even have a VVT-tech & it's 21st century.

Drag racing? Just because something is popular in the USA, it doesn't mean much to the rest of the world. Try Formula 1, try Rallying, Try WTCC. You're just too insular. Most yanks never go outside the US. Look in an atlas, believe it or not, there are places outside the USA. Always trying to brag how big and strong you are, like a teenage child trying to be macho. Naw. It didn't have enough power to compete with the other two. With another 100 hp, it would be hard to beat around a track.
I wouldn't want one because it's too small for my tastes. To each their own, though.
My first choice would be the Z06.

on top of what aggreSSive has noted it also doesn't have air conditioning and it's very cramped inside.. It's extremely noisy ... Would have liked to seen the gt3-rs or gt2 go against the z06 even though their price range is, to say the least, a distant stretch from the z06's price tagg.

alright you got me.. it's an option.. regardless my point is the elise and exige are stripped down race cars with little to no amenaties.. you have a thin peice of sheet metal between you and the pavement. Which is an awesome feeling but it's further away from a luxery sports car than any of it's competators..

It is not cramped inside I'm 6'0" and 200 lbs and I'm perfectly comfortable inside. In fact I have to pull the seat all the way forward to fully depress the clutch.
It is not extremely noisy. About 50 decibels and only above 6k rpms at that.
Also, seems worth mentioning that they used a base model Exige, against the top of the line Corvette and a 911 GT3.
Car and driver loses all credibility, BASE MODEL EXIGE vs S260 w/ track pack..
S260 is devastatingly fast.

the s260 is still rated at a 4sec 0-60 still slower than the z06's 3.6sec. base model or not lotus' aint that fast

I drove an exige for an hour at sebring recently. It handled like a dream and its an awesome car. But youre either high or a liar, I didnt even have room to breathe in the fucking car. Im 5'10'' and only 150lbs and had some trouble getting in the car. All the time people claim lotus' are rocket ships and that they can be daily driven, but I didnt see that this weekend. The car died before 100 mph. And with a helmet on I was hunched over and extremely uncomfortable the entire driving session.

Took some practice to learn how to get in and out. always make sure the seat is forward.
With seat back, put your right foot in and slide your tail over the hump and drop in. My car is an 05 Elise. I've never worn a helmet in my car but I'd think the prefered method would be to "REMOVE THE TOP".

Below 106mph I'm in 3rd gear.
You have to keep the rev's up. Not a whole lot of torque below 6k rpms.
If the engine turned off that particular car has problems.

Oh I enjoyed getting in and out it was like a workout. The car isnt slow Ill say that, but I got walked hard on the back straight of sebring by the new M3, carrera, and ISF.
There was one more thing that bothered me. After 10 minutes I couldnt figure out how to change the station on the radio :(.

About $6k engine mods usually fixes the problem on the long straights, so long as you do good work in the corners. An extra 100whp does wonders
The country roads I drive don't have many long straights. : )
The Blaupunkt is a piece of crap and one of the first things to get scrapped IMHO.
Speakers are 2nd.
I suppose I'll have to post vid of getting in and out.

Sorry there was one more thing.
When I went to shift and or check if the car was in neutral it seemed as if the entire drivetrain was shaking. Maybe it was just my car, or maybe you have an explaination for it.
The Viper ACR also seems like a strong track contender.

heh forgot about that. There's a mod that fixes that.. Mine has been fixed for so long I hadn't even thought about it.
The parts are about $40 if you buy the kit or $3 if you fab one up yourself.
Consists of a brace a threaded backing plate and a couple of bolts. You only need to drill 2 holes.
If your not a do it yourselfer you should probably pass on the Lotus.
1337 Taking the car apart to figure out ways to make it better your self is part of the fun of owning.
