@MrWatsurname I read years ago where this song was supposed to have been about Berry Gordie, not Richard Nixon. The song "You ain't done nuthin" is supposed to have been about Nixon.
guess it depends on individual interpretation. growing up black during these times, i considered it to be an admonition of the glorification of pimps and dope dealers that blaxploitation films represented as the "heroes" of the ghettos. i'd suggest that my interpretation still has currency today, as hollywood continues to represent sociopaths and sociopathy as heroic qualities in black folks.
This was Stevie Wonder"s best album. I still listen to this album. Yes I still call it an album because I remember when I purchased it. I would sit in my room and look at the album cover and listen to this song, Golden lady, Higher ground and Innervisions over and over. Believe it or not I really did not know this song was about Nixon until just recently and I lived through Watergate! The BBC2 still plays songs from this album--great stuff..
This song was about Nixon!!! how awesome is that!!! No Doubt the best musician eva!!! WOW most of us would be in a fetal position if we had his handicap!!
I've met and dealt with more celebreties in my life, from Prime Ministers to Beatles members, than you'll ever know, cos I dont name-drop. So please fjord76, do one and go away.
@JoshyouwaMany Yes he is! But it doesn't matter how old you are, Stevie's music is for all ages. Thanks to my parents, I've been listening to this since I was 5 years old.
Oohh how I love Stevie, got all his LP's , even bought all his CD again, 'cause then I'm able to listen to him when I'm driving in my car...I love driving and I love Stevie...thanks for posting this.....
I like how the bassist migrates back n forth from the 1st to the 5th positions throughout most of the song (excluding the bridge) creating a knowing tension by not playing the obvious/weighty 4th position until @3:20, he eventually does.. such a breath of fresh air..
@sammeiii Probably James Jamerson the worlds best Bass Player in his prime. Acknowledged by all the best Bass players as the man. Sadly no longer with us..
@sammeiii " He also played all or virtually all instruments on six of the album's nine tracks," from Wiki, I wanted to be sure, I always thought he played all the instruments on most of his albums. This man is so lovely and talented to a high degree...

Got to admit, it was Charlotte who introduced me to Stevie - what an encounter! Both of them.... really cool, even after 38 years ...oh boy! At least I stayed with Stevie!
Legendary bassist Willie Weeks about the recording session of this song:
"The record was done, and they had one track left. I arrived in the studio before Stevie did, and they put the track up and I started playing to it. He walked in and was like, “Yeah!,” and he’s groovin’ and goin’ on—it was great. He made only one change. When it got to the end of the verse I was playing the changes, but he said, “How about pedaling on the I chord? I did that and we were done."
I heard that Stevie wrote this song to reflect the way he felt about himself after his split with Syreeta. Whatever the truth of that, the lyrics describe a great many untrustworthy people in the world today. Did the 3 dislikes see themselves in the lyrics?
@ivorlottandtonybroke I can actually believe that. He could definitely have been talking about himself and Syreeta might've thought the same thing back in the day about Stevie. Interesting.
How come I'm reading posts by people who swear up and down that Stevie is singing about John Lennon or Richard Nixon? You insignificant fools think that you will be recognized as being worthwhile because you "know" something about a man you know absolutly nothing about. Most of you were sucking mamas' titty when this came out and don't know that he is singing about YOU! (must be seen...there's no doubt...he's the coolest one with the biggest mouth...) He's singing about people like YOU!
@robcarvin1 IMO he's actually talking about anyone that has money and they think their money can buy anything... and that they are right and know everything.
Yesterday I heard Stevie Wonder say that after writing this song he realized that it was mostly about himself. Makes for some extra poignancy on another listen.

One of my favourite Stevie songs and what a great rhythmn section : Willy Weeks on bass and Andy Newmark on drums. Brilliant. Bless the power of music and peace to us all.
He says "Don't you know John Lennon's got the super-plan", which is obviously a reference to "Imagine" and it's unmaterialistic ideas of peace. He's paying homage to to Lennon's ideas to contrast the materialistic, egotistical subject of the song.
This is too dope-thanx

He says "Don't you know John Lennon's got the super-plan", which is obviously a reference to "Imagine" and it's unmaterialistic ideas of peace. He's paying homage to to Lennon's ideas to contrast the materialistic, egotistical subject of the song.

"Genius"...One of the most over used words in the lingo. Write it in upper case letters when you talk about Stevie...
Not for one second do I believe the Lennon connection.
