  • Love this version. Ryan Adams absolutely does it justice. And Mark Knoepfler playing guitar too.

One of my favourite Emmylou songs.

  • Gram is the man

  • and I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but that's ex Flying Buritto Brother/ ex Eagles bernie leadon on electric guitar standing behind Emmylou. that's pretty F'ing cool.

  • Absolutely amazing, what a beautiful ode to Gram Parsons....and Emmylou Harris still sounds sublime!

  • Can anyone please explain how she sings the harmony on this song? It sounds very distinctively Emmylou, but i can't put my finger on what she does - harmony-wise...

  • This is awesome. I think it's funny though how Ryan Adams starts off sounding like himself and less than halfway through it he falls right into sounding like Gram.

  • just once in my life, i need a woman to look at me the way e.h. looks at who ever she is harmonizing with.

  • Looks like Bernie Leadon on lead - who else is in the band?

  • @UncleLudie That's Buddy Miller on the left, in the ball cap.

  • Ryan Adams is simply the man!

  • Wanna learn how to harmonize? Listen to this clip about 450 times. Emmy will teach you.

  • @whisky2roxy She is maybe the greatest backup singer of all time, which sounds dismissive, but is meant as a complement.

  • Ryan learned how to sing harmony with Whiskeytown.

  • F**kin' awesome. I always think of Ryan Adams as today's Gram but with a better voice and he's a better writer but...Gram was first and they takes big cahones.

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • ...and a good saloon in every single town....

  • Ryan is the Best!!! You can download a version of this he performs with Gillian Welch (10-28-1999) at Internet Archive for free!

  • so ryan adams has really been beck this whole tiime? holy shit that guy is creative!

  • You'd be nervous too if you had to perform a country song on stage with Emmylou Harris and Bernie Leadon. Great job.

  • When is this? Around Heartbreaker? 1999, 2000?

  • @knmsondre I think this is 1999 cause that's when he released it

  • @knmsondre Im thinking this is post gold. Would make sense ryan was a bigger name after gold and could get on television more easily.

  • @ClassicRocker30 This was a few years before Gold, before Heartbreaker even. It was filmed in September of 1999.

  • wow

  • Ryan nailed it.... well done.

  • Somewhere in the Joshua Trees, Gram is smiling

  • Wonderful.

  • It takes balls to take on this incredible Gram tune. Adams nails it. Note Emmylou's smile near the end of the song. She approved. Me too.

  • i love this song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am just totally getting hooked on Gram's work. This is a good performance . Ryan is really feeling it after that first verse. "And I saw my devie, and I saw my deep blue sea" that just kind of kicks it into gear.

  • Ryan Adams is a cowboy now? Cool. Way to go Emmylou and Ryan. Gram Parson still rules after all these years!

  • @Sidrat54 Seriously? Cold Roses? Jacksonville City Nights? Not to mention country songs among his other non-country albums (Pearls on a String comes to mind). Ryan has always been alt country. Hell, he's more country than 99% of the songs you hear on a 'country' radio station today. How could Gram Parson's not be an influence?

  • @mkbcoolman Thank you for liking real country music and not the "99%" of trash as you said.

  • November 5 - Happy birthday to both Ryan and Gram! Perfect video for today.

  • Fantastic rendition of a great song. Anyone know if this is available to downlaod somewhere? The cover Song for You is awesome too. Emmylou still looks and sounds great and should be an example to lots of older women that lettin' it go grey can be really attractive.

  • damn, that was nice gram...........

  • Here is a great live version of Gram Parson's song "Return of the Grievous Angel" performed by Ryan Adams and Emmylou Harris. Song was originally performed by Parsons and Harris.

If you like Gram Parsons, there is an album titled "Return of the Grievous Angel: A tribute to Gram Parsons." Featured artists include Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams), Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Elvis Costello, Wilco, Pretenders, etc. Worth checking out.

  • ryan voice is kinda similar to GP... amazing.

  • Awesome....absolutely awesome.........not the same without GP but a great rendition, Emmylou amazing as usual..........we need more GP videos on youtube!!!!!!!

  • You could tell he was nervous at the start (he admitted it later in interviews) but once he got that "high and lonesome" through the nose back in his sound, he nailed it....and who wouldn't be nervous, how would you like trying to follow GP on this one singing with the legendary woman who was there at the birth of it....

  • I can't get over how good this is.

  • Stunning, indeed epic!

  • Any duet w/ Emmylou is great. Her ability to harmonize w/ anyone is unmatched...

  • epic

  • whatever they sing will sound good as long as their hair looks that good :) ha

  • ryan looks great

  • Amazing!

  • Fantasitc cover. Gram would be proud.
