@creativeguitarstudio: I'm having trouble understanding what is happening in the song 'Under the Bridge' from the Red hot Chili Peppers. A D Major and a F# Major chord seem impossible and still it sounds good. What key/mode is that? how comes it sounds good?
Hi Andrew, thank you for all those amazing lessons you are a great teacher! there is something that i cannot understand and i thought you could help me...the question is: Mixolydian is a major mode. so if for example we have G major chord we can use G mixolydian or if we have E major chord we can use E mixolydian.. if we take the other chords when harmonising the G mixolydian mode we have A minor, B diminished C major etc. would it be ''correct'' to use the G mixolydian over those chords?
@Savvas1211 The mixolydian will give you a dominant sound. So if you're playing 9th chords or 13th chords or 7th chords, it would be a great scale to use since it's just a major scale with a flattened 7th. Not too that the mixolydian is built off the 5th scale tone of a major scale, that's why it's called the dominant. So if you're playing over a maj7 chord you wouldn't use it since the natural 7 would clash. You could play it in some blues or country/bluegrass music though.
You sir are absolutely brilliant,. Ive always had a hard time understanding ANYTHING that had to do with music., but your detailed explanations, and demonstrations have helped me to understand more about alot of different scale types chords and progressions. A big thanks from a new subscriber! - Momo
Very good. I've seen a lot of videos on modes but none of them begin to explain how to use them or how to create a sound that is different than the major scale.
Hi Andrew, Ur lessons are really great !!. thanks. I am a beginner in electric guitar. Could you please help me in a tutorial for basics uses of pickups of electric guitar ? I am new to electric guitar, i am not sure which pickup to use for what type of music ?? Switching between various pickups & their uses , basics of it, is a major doubt for me. It could be great , if you could do a video tutorial on this .. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for posting your lessons. Your approach puts in together in an easily understood format. I like the theory blended with how to make music. EXCELLENT!
Thanks for the kind words... And Yes, through Creative Guitar we are looking at establishing an entire Beginner & Intermediate online curriculum in the months ahead. We'll be covering a ton of stuff through this YouTube channel as well, so please subscribe and thanks again!
I've got to say you are a fantastic guitar teacher, you explain it as if the viewer has no knowledge about the topic and I find a lot of teachers forget to do this. Especially talking about modes.
I have A Question, When You Play A major, like the chords, A - Csharp- E - A And you wanna play mixolydian mode, do you play the notes A-B-Csharp-D-E-Fsharp-G-A Or E-Fsharp-Gsharp-A-B-Csharp-D-E????
@creativeguitarstudio Hi and thanks for posting this video. I have a question about the fifth chord shouldn't it be considered dominant and not major?
I never even considered UNsubscribing your channel - even though I know this stuff already, I like the way you explain - another great video! Thank you :) 5/5
Man, that's a great comment! Thanks... I've just become a YouTube Partner, so lot's & lot's more vid's on the way! Looking forward to working with all of my subscribers!
Great videos, even though this is deep for me your explanations are still fairly clear. I was wondering if you could do more practical lessons applying all of this theory to actual songs that would already be familiar. Personally I would like to see how it all connects. Thank you for your videos
Whinesilencer has it correct. The example in the video lesson is one way that modes are used, but keep in mind that there are others as well. They are especially important when "Non-Functioning" chords appear in a progression. When chords appear that are not found in the key, we can use arpeggios as well as the related mode to play over them. So, yes - the modes are very important.
Thanks Andrew and I look forward to part 2 of this and more on modes. (PS: I saw the Gambale video, and I understood that C mixolydian is the 5th degree that corresponds to root F therefore key of F, where G is 2, thus minor...) man a musician would be over-qualified to work at NASA!

I mean would it be correct to play G mixolydian over an Aminor progression since the notes are the same but the tonality changes? thank you!

how does the G end up minor? is there a formula, or is it because it relates to the key of F...?
gremboul 2 years ago
because it relates to F major. If you look at it, it gives the whole Ma, Mi, Mi, Ma, Ma, Mi, Dm thing that a major scale has for chords :o
