Its dissapointing that nothing was done after that to make the ride more comfortable for everyone. They should have a casing go over your shoulders to keep you planted so that you can focus on enjoying the ride, and not worry about falling off it.
That girl is stupid. Even if the lap bar isnt tight enough for you to feel comfortable, You can push it down as much as you want. This ride is completely safe.
Very tragic, but it's not the ride to blame, but the staff. Or more accurately the management for failing to properly train the workers who allowed Hackemer to ride.
@MsAWESOMNESS12345 I love Darien lake my parents have taken my brother and I once a year since we were 6 and Im 21 now lol , Its a fun time , This is an unfortunate event but I would sitll go.
This is horrifying. I wasn't even there and I felt so traumatized and sick when I heard about this. And I live about 20 minutes away from Darien Lake. I know this is a rare circumstance and probably doesn't happen often. But the thought that something like this happened to someone is enough to make me not go on this ride.
wait, not only was he legless (meaning he couldn't get strapped in properly, but he also put his hands up, letting go of the gear that's there for his protection AND thus causing more wind resistance making him slip out while being overweight so it wouldn't close all too well to begin with?
And just a sidenote: if the park operators denied him, they would've been sued for discrimination towards the disabled, and get shunned for denying a war veteran.
Why are people in the world so hideously ignorant? Good god. Don't speak. That dumb bitch being interviewed --- no common sense -- none. It's basic engineering, it's basic physics. If you have a lap bar on, and it is secure, it is not possible to fall out. I'd also like to note that the family apparently gave the operator a very hard time, as did the mentally challenged veteran. The kid eventually gave in and allowed him to ride.....regretfully. That sick family. There's a lawsuit now btw.
Ive been on that ride many many times and the bar doesn't shake it stays on you very firmly, i actually feel safest on that ride then most others, it has the seat belt and the hydrological bar that come down on your lap and hold you in, the ride was designed to make the rider to feel like they are flying. there was nothing wrong with the ride. he fell out because he had no legs. legs hold you in, if you don't have legs you don't have anything to hold you in and of course your gonna fly out.
OMG I'm going to Darien Lake on vacation in a week and if that happened when I was there I would've had a heart attack! I wish I could go on the ride though but it's closed for the rest of the season!!!! :( poop
As a soldier currently overseas, from Batavia, NY, and a rollercoaster lover I would like 2 say this. Most of u dont understand wat it is like 2 re-assimilate with amputated limbs, u try not to let it affect ur life like everyone tells u. For anyone 2 say he was committing suicide is arrogant, it was an accident. i love rollercoasters, and i kno THEY ALL are a risk, with or with out limbs, just higher with out them. Do u have disrespect for soldiers because many of them risk their lives everyday
@ralphmichael17 No one that I know of in these comments are saying he committed suicide. Most people are just pissed off at the ride operators for letting a guy with no legs onto the ride. It should be a rule to NOT ride it unless you have all your body parts or not needing assistance to be able to get into one of the rollercoaster carts. Not trying to argue against you, just saying.
I was at Darien lake a few weeks ago for my vacation and I was standing in line with my brothers and this girl started randomly talking to us cause we were talking about the accident that happened, and she said I was right behind the guy who fell off.... The first witness in the video was her that was the girl we talked to... I was surprised to see her that she was still going on rides after that accident!!!!
ok the "accident" was a suicide. he was very depressed and he was scarred by fighting in iraq and losing both of his legs and 1 hip. basically he couldnt take his life anymore so he went on the ride on purpose because he knew that it would happen. yes, it is sad but he wanted to do it so he did and now hes happpier.
why is the dike talking shit on this soldier faggot? does being a hero in america mean that you are mentally retarded? dude with no legs on a fucking coaster the dize of mount rushmore and we expected him to live? dude you suck, and i am not surprised that you are dead. as if the war wasnt enough and didnt get to you first. phuck, yall r garbage.
i was at daring lake the first year they got the superman i was was 16 at the time and 11 years later that image still sticks in my head. i witnessed a person fall of the superman, the only difference between the marine and the person i witnessed fall off is that the guy i witnessed had legs but he was to heavy for the ride. Till this day i will never go on the superman, because that image will always be stuck in my mind. That is not somthing you want to witness. changes minds quickly.
@Swimmerchik821 what i dont get is y they let him go in the park basicly for all the rides thier u have to have uper boddie control and atleast two legs!
@heartcrusher237 Yeah he was joking. But he was also being a dick/asshole at the same time. Pretty much making fun of it. This is serious shit and it's not a joke.
@55SuperShadow Well the thing is, he was wearing prostedic legs and he took them off for the ride. I hope to god that the people who let him on are fired.
I read somewhere that there weren't any seat belts on this ride before 1999. Not until another accident occurred. In that case, the rider did survive. I can't believe it DIDN'T have seat belts at one time. This is so tragic. :,( I agree that it was poor judgement for the staff to allow him on the ride. Unfortunately, that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. I pray for them & Sgt. Hackemer's loved ones. So ironic that he survived Iraq only to die at home riding a roller coaster.
The thing about this I find funny after working at Darien Lake is that, after working there the management is really bad. Not even just the management but the rides mechanics are weird old guys that are just plain either lazy or just low-class people in general. After watching this I would not doubt that the ride restraints were loose.
Woow! I've been on this ride soo many times and it is completely safe! This guy fell off the ride because he had no legs, the bar to strap you in goes mainly over your legs so this was a very idiotic action of the staff, and just happened to result in death. But for this girl to trash the rides reputation of not being safe by stating that the bars and seatbelts were loose just draws more attention to the ride being dangerous! Which is not true! This death was a direct result of the staff!
what the hell were they doing letting him on with no legs.of course there was a chance he would fall out,its over 200 feet high and around 90mph.the restraints go over the legs yet he had none so what the hell were the restraints keeping in his trouser leg god bless him, just awful
I'm definitely going to have to point a little bit of the blame on the staffing and the 16yr old kids that they have working rides like this. My thoughts and prayers go out to this guys family!
@redimport95 No I work at darien lake and they were not 16 year old kids. The minor's that are ride operators only are allowed to work at the kid land rides.
now im kinda scared to go to darian lake for some reason this accident is making ppl..well alt ppl not go......... this is really scary i feel so bad ...but if i were him and had no leg i would go on it AT ALL
Everyone needs to understand the ride itself was not at fault here and although its unfortunate a war veteran passed the blame should surely be on the park staff for allowing him on. Please understand that lap bars are NOT I repeat NOT made for people with amputated legs! Lap bars are made to secure a passenger by compressing the thighs down into the seat and how is that supposed to occur when someone is on with no legs?? I mean no disrespect but I think he AND STAFF used very poor judgement.
Supposedly, there was a sign about "two legs", but the web site, although stating it for for other rides, does not have the requirement for Ride of Steel.
I was there on that day I road it right before him I couldnt believe it , why on earth would they let him on the roller coaster i could see if you road the viper motorcoaster but ride of steel are you serious??? Feel sorry for the family and the pple who saw this happen.
he didnt have legs to secure him its the ride operaters fault not that the ride doesnt secure you ive only ben to darien lake once but i rode that ride like 20 times in a row and yeag you fly out of your seat a little but its like 1 inch your completely safe if you have legs
This is so freaking stupid. Someone should have said something. The ones who actually had legs should have said something. They would have felt the pressure on their legs from the bar. They should have known that their legs were one of the things that was going to keep them down. The people who worked there should have known. I don't understand.. Why, why didn't they say anything? Why would God do this..
All of the riders were barely strapped in?!?!? Are you fucking kidding me?!?!? BULLSHIT!!! I've ridden this ride numerous times, and my lap hurt on those final hills during the airtime because they are so tight. And they shake?!?!? I agree you can feel a little vibration in the back, but it's nothing unsafe. Shut up you stupid 14 year old dumb broad!!! They shouldn't have let a legless man on the damn ride, now I can't ride on Saturday. My thoughts and respect goes to the man, but wow...
nvm bout what I said before because its safe if a 12 year old can go in the very front seat with their hands up the whole way and not be close to falling off

On the Darian Lake website, most of the thrill rides have the words "must have legs" in the warnings. This ride does not. The park is responsible for allowing it to happen. The public is not intelligent enough to make that decision on their own. I have seen idiot guests offer to sign a waver to put their small children on a ride that is not safe for them.
Don't see how this man was tall enough to ride when he was missing most of his legs. Appreciate his service but that alone should not have given him the green light to ride. Everyone needs to be held to the same standards. Someone needs to be held accountable.
Agree with everyone saying the restraints are perfectly fine. Have never ridden this ride but reminds me of Millennium Force at Cedar Point, just a seat belt and lap bar but you are in good and tight. There's supposed to be a tiny bit of room so you can feel like you're flying out of your seat at times (air time). You're not going to of course if you're tall enough to ride.
Weird thing is my family just got back from our vacation there and 2 days later this happens... O_o
I remember going on the Ride Of Steel and I agree with that one girl. Barely anything holds you down. You got that yellow bar holding your waist down and that's it. It was really stupid for the staff to let a handicapped man on the ride. Whoever said he could get on should be fired.
@Swimmerchik821 exactly! i've been on that ride many times, its easily one of the best rides i have been on and its safe, but the straps hold your legs, the error was letting a man with no legs on to this ride.
same here I was there the Sunday before it happen and we got on it 4 times!! this ride is very safe but we all have legs... cant figure out why on earth they would let him on!!
The guy had no legs. I don't know about you guys, but I use my lower body on roller coasters to anchor myself. Also, The Superman coaster, both New England & Darian, are coasters that legs are necessary. The lap bars are to hold your lower half in. Anyone with out legs should only ride over the shoulder lap bar rides. New rules should be put in place for riders. Keep the original bars, that's what makes the ride great.
The lap bar and seatbelt are enough restraint for that ride. I can't tell u how many times I've risen it and three doesn't need to b any added safety features. It doesn't go upside down or anything so a drop down shoulder restraint would b ridiculous. Barely strapped in? The lap bar crushes ur nuts trust me and the seatbelt doesn't let u slip out...because ur legs can't get past it...
The ride operators must be brain dead! One look @ the lap belt around this guy would have told you it wouldn't have anything to hold on to if he slid up a little bit.
These operators are obviously products of the public school system.
but still he didn't reach the height requirement for the ride if he had mechanical legs they dont count thats like a little kid using stilts to pass then taking them off to ride.
This could have been avoided with shoulder straps,It should be Mandatory on roller coasters, very disapointing.Race cars don't have lap belts anymore for a reason,5 point crash harnesses should be used.Shoulder and seat support like Batman at Six Flags is safer.
@130hc Sorry, but no way should all coaster have shoulder straps. Only ones with loops need them. They bang your head around like crazy and if they were on all coasters it would take the fun out of them. The best part about some of these rides is feeling free and getting lots of air time. The restraints were perfectly fine for this type of coaster, this man (may he rest in peace) did not meet the ride requirements.
@113dvdsandcounting I agree with the loops part, but there seems to be alot of theme park accidents these days i feel sorry for these people, but there has to be improvements in safety.I've rolled a car with a 5 point crash harness and i'm glad I walked Away,But the camaro did not.It was done after it rolled 4 times.
@130hc Glad you walked away too. I'm sure safety can be looked into and tweaks can me made here and there, but probably not the need for major changes on most of the rides.
@130hc Actually, this could have been avoided if the operators had adhered to the height restriction or the "riders must have two legs" restriction. Additional restraints for this ride are not necessary.
@SeriouslyRobbie I want to Agree with you,but with legs or not people are getting hurt at these theme parks,I know this because i'm looking at the videos to my right,Legs or not the operator should have done his job and I hope someone thinks of more safety devices for these very rides that Propel us to nearly 65 Mph and 100ft in the Air you need good restraints if you ride a roller coaster that pulls negative g-forces,I prefer shoulder straps,a 5 point crash harness works well,it saved my neck.
@130hc I think people complain about being hurt more because they are desperate for attention and sue-happy. There really are not that many serious injuries in relation to the number of people who ride without incident. Any serious injury is generally a result of disregarding posted safety precautions or very rarely, ride malfunction. Interstate highways are far more dangerous, statistically. Should we have 5 point harnesses in our cars?
He had fake mechanical legs. He took the off right before he got onto the ride but I dont understand why he would have done a thing like that and I dont get why the operators let this man get onto the ride without them
I live by darien lake. I'm a Buffalilian. I love buffalo! I've lived her all my life. And I've been going to darien lake ever since i was little. I rode ever single roller coaster at least 50 times! Not kidding! I go ever summer anywhere from 5 to 20 times and ride EVERYTHING! I've never felt unsafe on ANY of the rollercoasters. There is NOTHING wrong with the Ride of Steel. He didn't meet the requirements. That is what happened. It's sad that a war veteran died, but it is not anyones fault....
Everyone was like and like and was like. And a leather little thing around your strap......Um a seatbelt? Man way to draw fear into people with something that is completely safe. A different restraint and he'd be alive. Facts are facts.
Who the fuck lets a man with no legs on a roller coaster that has a restraint as ONLY A LAPBAR..... The ride is perfectly save for people that have at least 3 functioning extremeties! HE HAS NO LEGS WHERE IS THE LAPBAR APPLYING RESTRAINT AGAINST
@PHAEDRIDER Now why would you go and taint the "fallen hero" story with a silly little detail like the three foot sign clearly spelling out why he shouldn't have been on the ride in the first place ;-)
Its dissapointing that nothing was done after that to make the ride more comfortable for everyone. They should have a casing go over your shoulders to keep you planted so that you can focus on enjoying the ride, and not worry about falling off it.

My thoughts and respect goes to the man, but wow...
jslim39 7 months ago
nvm bout what I said before because its safe if a 12 year old can go in the very front seat with their hands up the whole way and not be close to falling off

There must be a height restriction. I doubt he was tall enough.
getwaynej 7 months ago
On the Darian Lake website, most of the thrill rides have the words "must have legs" in the warnings. This ride does not. The park is responsible for allowing it to happen. The public is not intelligent enough to make that decision on their own. I have seen idiot guests offer to sign a waver to put their small children on a ride that is not safe for them.
blattman13 7 months ago
Don't see how this man was tall enough to ride when he was missing most of his legs. Appreciate his service but that alone should not have given him the green light to ride. Everyone needs to be held to the same standards. Someone needs to be held accountable.
May he rest in peace.
113dvdsandcounting 7 months ago
Agree with everyone saying the restraints are perfectly fine. Have never ridden this ride but reminds me of Millennium Force at Cedar Point, just a seat belt and lap bar but you are in good and tight. There's supposed to be a tiny bit of room so you can feel like you're flying out of your seat at times (air time). You're not going to of course if you're tall enough to ride.

wait did he die?

i went on this june 11-12 5 times each day and nothing happened. Im kinda scared now..

@lala228ful as long as u have two legs youll be ok!

XxXACIDXxXRAZORXxX 7 months ago
@Swimmerchik821 exactly! i've been on that ride many times, its easily one of the best rides i have been on and its safe, but the straps hold your legs, the error was letting a man with no legs on to this ride.
kristalafraugh 7 months ago 42
@kristalafraugh
same here I was there the Sunday before it happen and we got on it 4 times!! this ride is very safe but we all have legs... cant figure out why on earth they would let him on!!
ronaldbuffalo2 4 months ago
The guy had no legs. I don't know about you guys, but I use my lower body on roller coasters to anchor myself. Also, The Superman coaster, both New England & Darian, are coasters that legs are necessary. The lap bars are to hold your lower half in. Anyone with out legs should only ride over the shoulder lap bar rides. New rules should be put in place for riders. Keep the original bars, that's what makes the ride great.
aprildot 7 months ago
The lap bar and seatbelt are enough restraint for that ride. I can't tell u how many times I've risen it and three doesn't need to b any added safety features. It doesn't go upside down or anything so a drop down shoulder restraint would b ridiculous. Barely strapped in? The lap bar crushes ur nuts trust me and the seatbelt doesn't let u slip out...because ur legs can't get past it...
bathlax08 7 months ago 2
The ride operators must be brain dead! One look @ the lap belt around this guy would have told you it wouldn't have anything to hold on to if he slid up a little bit.
These operators are obviously products of the public school system.
thrummer1953 7 months ago
Moral of the Story: You need to have legs for a lap harness to work.

roflwaffle12321 7 months ago
but still he didn't reach the height requirement for the ride if he had mechanical legs they dont count thats like a little kid using stilts to pass then taking them off to ride.
JTompkins16 7 months ago
@JTompkins16
SO TRUE
MaJoDo 7 months ago
This could have been avoided with shoulder straps,It should be Mandatory on roller coasters, very disapointing.Race cars don't have lap belts anymore for a reason,5 point crash harnesses should be used.Shoulder and seat support like Batman at Six Flags is safer.
130hc 7 months ago
@130hc Sorry, but no way should all coaster have shoulder straps. Only ones with loops need them. They bang your head around like crazy and if they were on all coasters it would take the fun out of them. The best part about some of these rides is feeling free and getting lots of air time. The restraints were perfectly fine for this type of coaster, this man (may he rest in peace) did not meet the ride requirements.
113dvdsandcounting 7 months ago
@113dvdsandcounting I agree with the loops part, but there seems to be alot of theme park accidents these days i feel sorry for these people, but there has to be improvements in safety.I've rolled a car with a 5 point crash harness and i'm glad I walked Away,But the camaro did not.It was done after it rolled 4 times.
130hc 7 months ago
@130hc Glad you walked away too. I'm sure safety can be looked into and tweaks can me made here and there, but probably not the need for major changes on most of the rides.
113dvdsandcounting 7 months ago
@130hc Actually, this could have been avoided if the operators had adhered to the height restriction or the "riders must have two legs" restriction. Additional restraints for this ride are not necessary.
SeriouslyRobbie 7 months ago
@SeriouslyRobbie I want to Agree with you,but with legs or not people are getting hurt at these theme parks,I know this because i'm looking at the videos to my right,Legs or not the operator should have done his job and I hope someone thinks of more safety devices for these very rides that Propel us to nearly 65 Mph and 100ft in the Air you need good restraints if you ride a roller coaster that pulls negative g-forces,I prefer shoulder straps,a 5 point crash harness works well,it saved my neck.
130hc 7 months ago
@130hc I think people complain about being hurt more because they are desperate for attention and sue-happy. There really are not that many serious injuries in relation to the number of people who ride without incident. Any serious injury is generally a result of disregarding posted safety precautions or very rarely, ride malfunction. Interstate highways are far more dangerous, statistically. Should we have 5 point harnesses in our cars?
SeriouslyRobbie 7 months ago
@SeriouslyRobbie I recommend 5 point crash harnesses they work well, and yes i'm getting a set for a vette i'm working on.
130hc 7 months ago
He had fake mechanical legs. He took the off right before he got onto the ride but I dont understand why he would have done a thing like that and I dont get why the operators let this man get onto the ride without them
tye1397 7 months ago
I was next in line to get onto this when this happened. It was at the very first drop

It's sad that a war veteran died, but it is not anyones fault....
coooper0909YT 7 months ago
The ride is 100% completely safe for those who meet the physical requirements. This man did not, and this unfolded as a result.

U ask me the superman is COMPLETELY safe wen u have legs. Why the FUCK wuld u let somebody with no legs on! N I love this ride bt idk bout it anymore

HE DIDN'T REACH THE HEIGHT REQUIREMENT. OF COURSE HE FELL OUT PUT A MIDGET IN THERE AND THEY WOULD TOO!!!!!
JTompkins16 7 months ago
Everyone was like and like and was like. And a leather little thing around your strap......Um a seatbelt? Man way to draw fear into people with something that is completely safe. A different restraint and he'd be alive. Facts are facts.

My condolences go out to the family, but the man should not of been on the ride. Why was he let on the ride in the first place?
I think there is more to this story than what is being told.
smorin81 7 months ago
Who the fuck lets a man with no legs on a roller coaster that has a restraint as ONLY A LAPBAR..... The ride is perfectly save for people that have at least 3 functioning extremeties! HE HAS NO LEGS WHERE IS THE LAPBAR APPLYING RESTRAINT AGAINST
3PRECISION3 7 months ago
nobody expected this to happen? except the people who wrote the rules, made the sign and put it there .. the sign that says " must have two legs"
PHAEDRIDER 7 months ago 2
@PHAEDRIDER Now why would you go and taint the "fallen hero" story with a silly little detail like the three foot sign clearly spelling out why he shouldn't have been on the ride in the first place ;-)

OSHA should look into this.
