I had one of these.. cops kept pulling me over because they thought it was illegal. A 15 minute journey would take me an hour because cops like trivial cases of crime rather than the serious shit. I would have to explain to them that it is a motorscooter and they would sit in their cop car checking it out on the console.. GRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!
Yeah it would be road legal at least in the state of kanas i Had mine tagged and insured. let me tell you it wasn't easy though and it cost alot just to find and then buy one .
Looks like a hoot to drive! I've been wanting a Peel P-50 (or a suitable replica) for a while now, something to drive to town and back without breaking the bank (what can I say, I'm a sucker for little cars...). Don't suppose I could talk you into making one for me?
If not, that's okay, I think me and my dad are going to break down and build one sooner or later. Awesome car, you did a grand job.
and what vehicle would NOT be totally destroyed after crashing into an 18-wheeler? Would you make the same comment about a Harley? What vehicle would you like to crash into an 18 wheeler in?
technically it is not a "car" but an enclosed motorscooter. Laws are different in each state but as a "car" it would not be road legal as-is. As a scooter? maybe. This is basically what most Vintage "Microcars" are: Enclosed Scooters.
@microcars Actually, since they only have three wheels they can also be classified as motorcycles, or so i've heard. Although, road-legal or not, i want one!
@thenodfather i think s long it can reach the legal speed limit of 35-40mph.I'm not sure if its a good idea to drive it on highway since the motor has the stress of holding a body and the person inside the vehicle,to me if it can reach the limit of 65 it can be legal.
It is the peel p50 only another way to strong engine in it..and putting some other wheels on it.... why cant they make there own chassi shame on them :( i dont like it ,sorry
@simcaP60fan why can't they make their own chassis? THEY DID MAKE THEIR OWN! They made the whole thing from scratch. Why don't you read the description? Shame you YOU for not reading...
Cool, are these available here yet as kits? After watching Jeremy on Top Gear driving the Peel 50 thru the halls of the BBC Building I want one to drive into my cubicle at work LOL and this little Peel replica would be just the ticket!
Any plans to make a few more of those for sale here in the states instead of having to look in the UK for a replica? I wouldnt mind putting a self contained honda scooter engine/cvt combo in there.
Well, it depends where you drive it, some places might let you ride without license, some might say it has to have a scooter registration, it all depends on the state,or country.
This WAS intended to be a replica of the original Peel P.50. Check out the "Peel P50 Birth" series of postings on YT for a summary of the build process. VERY interesting. I now want to do the Tridrent, maybe with the electric drive system as built on one copy back in about '65...
In most states, this would be classified as a less-than-50cc scooter. With alarger engine, it's almost always street-legal as a motorcycle. Registration laws vary, but these are relatively easy to register in most of these states.
The advantage of having 3 wheels is that it registers as a scooter, or motorcycle, which has far less restrictions than 4 wheelers. Another reason is it's easier to build a frame for a 3 wheeled car. (One less wheel to worry about! Despite 3 wheels, vehicles like this have surprisingly great balance!! :)
my big question: is this thing in any way at all street legal?? could claim it is a modified scooter?? 50cc scooters are street legal (i have one that is anyway...) just want to know this before hubby gets any ideas...
Yes, it is street-legal it more than likely registers as a scooter. I've built a type of bicycle-car that has a motor. Since it has bicycle pedals, it doesn't need registration, or insurance to be street-legal! (It's technically a motor-assisted bicycle, with a body.)
Are you saying this doesn't need registration? What country / state are you in, cause they have different laws on these. In Texas, you do need a moped license for it. I had a motor scooter, same motor size as the Myzer, and I got a ticket for no registration. But, a bicycle with an assistant motor is legal without regist., as long as you can still pedal it.
That thing looks the same size as this toy car I had when I was like 4 where you walk inside and drive it with your feet XD. Same color too, but it had a yellow roof.
