I saw this concert when I was a teenager. The endurance of this particular performance of Visions Of Johanna baffles me a little. Although it sounds good overall and has moments of brilliance, Garcia botches a couple of different verses. For me the night had a strange vibe and the Philadelphia audience is notoriously unforgiving. At a Spectrum show in October 94 I vividly remmeber about 30 percent of the audience walking out during the encore, which was 'Liberty.' Can you imagine?
The Dead does Dylan so well, but I think Dylan's own recording on "Blond on Blond" made in Nashville with Robbie Robertson and Al Kooper captures the nighttime slightly depressed, slightly paranoid feeling with remarkable finesse.
This is just wonderful " how can I explain it's so hard to get on" I love you and miss you everday big guy. I'm 46 and my 1st show was in 1978. It's been 33 years, it's not even music to me anymore - it's a part of my life and who I am. I'm very proud to be a deadhead and thankful for being able to have seen this Magic 100s of times live. Love you and miss you Jerry. Thanks so much !!!
A fantastic rendition! One of my favorite live performances. Jerry was definately "on" that night. He took that Dylan tune and had his way with it while making it his own! The heart wrenching lyrics and the whaling of Jerry's guitar is just a perfect recipe to pull at the ol' heart strings!
I was at this run and remember thinking Jerry looked and sounded good. If anyone has the video of the Iko Iko from this show please post it. Jerry is dancing, actually dancing and its possibly the finest version I have ever heard. Long live the Dead!
Seems like it, with the little laugh at the top "quiet, We're all doin our best to deny it" like he knows it will be...and I feel like I'm standing on some field, in the rain, looking up at him on the right side of the stage looking back at us through his glasses and beard, as our collective conscience explodes.
Simply beautiful. Funny, this song was never one of my favorites when I was going to shows from 85-95, but after hearing it a few weeks ago on the radio, I have began listening to it and playing it frequently. Very thankful for all the music, and for the Grateful Dead Channel.
Love the defiance with which Jerry plays these Dylan "power" chords. This is time capsule perfect. To quote Phil, "unutterably poignant". His last great hurrah? Perhaps. But, as I always say, . . . . . Jerry Lives.
@DocRich99 Well said Doc, was in Salt lake with the band, then back to SF for a rew runs at The Warfield. jerry was having a hard winter. soon after this debra let go Gloria and Vince; Jerry's long time domestic assistants. The circle tightened a bit more. lots of emotion here and the Stella Blue from salt lake is wonderful... by vegas, it was a downward spiral, with some beautiful moments, but few and far between. Visions was a light in a dark spring/summer peace~alikat
The Soldier Field version used to be on YT but is gone. Jerry pumping his fist during the "Mona Lisa musta had them highway Blues" will send chills. I was fortunate to have been there. I agree...Sad but sweet!
have an audio recording of this very performance.. pick out my daughters middle name (Johanna) after hearing it.. nice seeing the video that goes with it
This is about as good as it gets.. I wish the Video of the Visions from the next to last night at soldier field was still up there... THE FIST PUMP when Jerry sings you can tell by the way she smiles! this still makes my skin crawl... Jerry had an imperfect voice but it was perfect for this... there is so much soul considering how little he had left in the tank watching him belt these out in 95 was a real treat.. I miss this more than words could ever explain
It's fitting, Dylan, a bit of a recluse in later years, attended Jerry's funeral. This song is a tribute to two musical giants. Jerry delivers such a powerful version it boggles the mind
what i wanted to say is : jerry sings a love song for ( maybe johanna), and bob wrote a very unique ( but hard to understand ) short story. That´s the difference. sorry for my bad english.... There would be so much more to discus...
@homann25 I'm not sure I hear this version as a love song, but I do think the emotional tone is a lot different from how Dylan sings it- although that has gone through a lot of changes over time. Jerry seems to tap into the desperation of the song to a greater degree, while Dylan often pushes an ironic humor.
Every time I hear a cover of Bob Dylan frome Jerry, I feel that jerry is saying ( here Bob, this is how much I Love You. and thanks ).Jerry loved Bob Dylan as much as we all do. But I bet if you asked Bob Dylan if there was one guitar player you could spend the rest of your career with, bob would say it would be Jerry Garcia. I just bet it would. Bob also loved Jerry!

I love Jerry and this is beautiful...but IF (big "if") anyone owns this song, it's gotta be Bob. It's the kind of song that is so unique that it could only spring from one mind -- and creating this song is a greater achievement than performing a beautiful rendition of it. Jerry owns this song no more than Laurence Olivier owns Hamlet.

@bigjer88 all i wanted to say is: Jerry sings a love song ( maybe for johanna) and Bob wrote a very unique but hard to understand short story. And this is a real difference....Sorry for my bad english, there is so much more to discus...
@homann25 You're right: there is so much more to discuss...and no worries about your English; it's better than 95% of the Americans who post on YouTube. You're right, though: there are many different ways to appreciate this song. I guess I just had a problem with the use of the word, "own," because the concept of "owning" this song just seems odd. I recognize, as you point out, that this might just be a product of language barriers, though. Respect.
@lunarchick1971 I guess one of those might have been me....I would have bawling even harder if I knew then that this would be one of the last times I got to see/hear Jerry (after more than 200 times).
I have seen Jerry play over 50 times, those were great days. I am glad I got to see as many Dead and Jerry shows. This was one of the last few shows right? I saw the NJ show with Bob Dylan opening. I think that was like the 3rd to last show? He played this at that show right? I was in a tree, then out of it.
I Was AT THIS SHOW!!! AS GOOD AS THIS IS IT CAN NOT COMPARE TO HEARING IT LIVE, Jerry made this song his own written by BOB but JERRY made this song his esp on this night. IT was in Philly this show was one of the better ones that were sung this year RFK was damn good too BLACK MUDDY RIVER baby right in DC
@corn3rston3 I just realized that I was there too! Brought tears to my eyes, and still does. "How can I explain....Its so hard to get on", and that soulful solo that follows, less than 5 months before his departure.....Aug. 9, 1995. Seemed to me like the world ended, and yet people were still driving their cars, talking on TV, carrying on like nothing had happened....probably I will never reallly be over it.
I think I'm finally ''getting'' Jerry Garcia. The fact that he did justice to my favorite Dylan song makes me want to reconsider his whole career, which I tend to neglect. It's not my favorite, still really good stuff.
Phil Lesh said later that during this particular performance, he wanted to stop playing and simply watch. Every one knew Garcia was absolutely nailing it.
that buttery smooth guitar and that timelessly beautiful voice will forever live in the hearts and minds of us all. Thank you Jerry for showing us all a beauty we never knew.
This was my final of 170 shows and they played fairly well, esp. this cut....It's still so sad knowing what lay ahead in August...We'll always miss you, Jerry
Inside the museums, Infinity goes up on trial. Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while. But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues, you can tell by the way she smiles....
THUMBS UP!.....this blew me away in concert.....and this an songs like 'days between' longies....the teleprompter is pretty helpful....and when u read the lyrics its pages long...so kudos Jerry for using something to help us ENJOY THE SONG MORE....jerry prompter...:)
I listen to this song, (only 2 versions i know of) more than any other song, even all the great 'dead' songs, covers, etc. What i feel is the struggle with addiction, i see it in his eyes, what a great, great man. he's in all of our hearts, always!
I have tears in my eye's. Miss you so much Jerry. If I'd a had any idea, I'd have stayed the night in Chicago and caught the Sunday show too. If I only knew. RIP
this song breaks my heart when i listen. hardest one without getting a lump in my throat. so much raw emotion in jerrys voice. this alone made it worth a whole tour. made the vince era easier to digest..thanks for the great memories boys. ill never forget those days
fantastic. love love love this.... yes... thank you.... wow...... so grateful am i and countless others... for the blessing that is jerry.... jerry me!!! :o) hahahaha!!! crying tears of joyyyyy... wow.
I'm sorry but I imissjg is right. I couldn't disagree with you more. In 77', for example, the set lists were awsome... and bigger. But even a Garcia guitar "lead" in any song (relatively speaking) is longer than the sum total of "any" song he played that decade! Then there's the isure of age. I saw from 84' on and... I'll tell you he was on fire on some of those shows in 94". There is a certain sensitivity to his guitar playing (and voice) in later years that are non- existant in the 70's.
Can''t get over this particularly "haunting" version of Visions. I think this was his "Swan Song." Garcia at his best... even though the 95 shows themselves were not the best ever.
If you can count all the great shows of the `94-`95 years on your fingers, then you haven`t heard the music in a real long time!!That`s a ridiculous statement. The `70`s were awsome,Jerry was pretty much, tight, everynight. But,the late `80`s/ 90`s were also tremendous.Jerry played w/more heart and the raspiness of his aging vocal chords, put a soulful tinge on all of his tearful ballads, that weren`t an option back in the 70`s...
I am, most likely, going to watch this several times in a row. Freaky part: I have this on VHS too. I saw this show with a "Mail order" tic, but it was so cheesy. The old dude thought the foil wAS A FANCY TIK, AND i WAS LET IN. tHE NIGHT BEFORE THIS, i GOT IN FOR THE LAST HALF OF THE SECOND SET. OOPS. SORRY 'BOUIT THE CAAPS
@folkhippy but HE WAS THE LEADER OF THE BAND GIVE HIM A BREAK..... Have you seen Phil and friends doing tribute to... or BOBBY crying when he sings a Jerry song that he couldnt muster for 15 years cuz he knew Jerry for alkmosst 50 yrs ... 1st you can fuck off then you can listen
i think that mona lisa is pretty lame . . // especially for a song with some of the most gorgeous lyrics ever written. (never sung better . . by anyone . . than this version).
one of jerry's favorite dylan tunes. a great version, it's on "fallout from the phil zone". phil said it was one of jerry's best solos, "poignant". i traded the sunday ticket for this night, the sat, and missed the 1st unbroken chain. so it's always bitter sweet. but this has always tempered that. the 1st "all too much" helps too.
I can't express well what this song does for me. I lost count of all the shows, there were plenty; the point though is, "this is why we all came and danced and soaked it all in". Jerry was fragile and that is what really came through, he was like me and you , he was real , oh how I miss the moment when "it" happened. Peace and Love to you all!
this is a masterpiece. perhaps the last he ever delivered . . but nothing surpasses this. // the ghost of electricity, howls in the bones of her face. - the most beautiful singing i ever heard him do.
i can remember, like it was yesterday, when Jerry broke this out at the Spec.He played it without missing one beat! His guitar was sounding especially well on this night and when it was over, not only did it leave the crowd in a state,Jerry backed away from the mic as if he knew he just blew are minds as he had done many times before!
What a fantastic guitarist Jerry was - his playing always served the music and not his ego. Dylan must be proud of this epic performance and interpretation of his great song
I was at this one (missed the Unbroken bustout by one night , but got it at Giant's later in the year) Jerry left us all in awe after this ended. If there is a better version of this i'll be damned.
Do we know? really know? what this man has done to this place we call home/earth.....It has been changed for me forever.....Thank You and God Bless Jerry Garcia. The man made me full.....
Just when you thought there wasn't much to see after Brent died. Seeing the fat man sing this still causes my eyes to well up with tears. Seems like yesterday.
I've posted my thoughts before, but this performance deserves another, I've listened to this song so many times, never tire of it, but usually by Mr Dylan himself, but this version is just sublime, he really is in tune with the man himself, an amazing, heartfelt, delightful performance, I doubt anyone else will achieve.
Many, many thanks again for sharing this monumental delivery of an amazing song, I love listening to it ! God Bless Jerry.
here's to the man who changed so many lives in such a positive way and whose frequency will reverberate through the millenium. HIP HIP HOORYAY!! HIP HIP HOORAY!! HIP HIP HOORAY!!
Man, You are both right, perfectly correct.."Sure gota lota gall" It was all good, great, without compare. Take what you need; leave the rest. "Name me someone who's not a parisite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him Please, understand, get IT. WILL YA?
My kids, and I have them, beyond pubirty and approaching his 20's...They don't have this from their current day. The only thing that compare is them asking me forr CD of shows and listening. Get it - I mean IT - WE WERE THERE
I'd go to 1973 way before i'd go to 1977. Not that they don't kill in '77 but there is not the spontaneity or originallity of the jams that you get in 1973. I'm not knockin 1977 but to say thet Never killed from 1993-1995 is a flat out lie and one i'm tired of hearing from old timers. BTW if I could go back in time to any one show 8-27-72 No dOUBT ABOUT IT. THAT SHOW IS HEAVEN ON EARTH.
no one ever did this song better than this. this is one of those handful of times where garcia transcended it all. this is one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. Picasso, Coltrane, Pollack don't have anything on this guy . . not on this night anyway.
Road tripped to Berkeley Community Theater for the Visions breakout and was in Salt Lake for its return 2/21/95, but if I had to compare the Visions, I would pick Salt Lake. It was Space >Visions >Sugar Mag.The show also included Salt Lake City and Just Want To Make Love. Yikes. Alabama breakeout on 2/19!
definitely not a typical sound on his guitar. never really heard him play like this. kind of cock eyed, but still very powerful. the solo is un utteringly poignant (as lesh put it). the guitar is that new one he had at the end . . not rosebud
What do you mean? Garcia used this tone on Lightning Bolt almost the whole time he used it. It also isn't very far from his Rosebud tone either. In late '93 his tone almost sounded like an acoustic/electric but he scrubbed that after the winter tour and went back to the tone you are hearing here.
Jerry botching up some lyrics was completely normal

It's easy to think of '95 being worthless. But then you go back and find there were some real treats. This is one of them.

I listen to this song, (only 2 versions i know of) more than any other song, even all the great 'dead' songs, covers, etc. What i feel is the struggle with addiction, i see it in his eyes, what a great, great man. he's in all of our hearts, always!

this song breaks my heart when i listen. hardest one without getting a lump in my throat. so much raw emotion in jerrys voice. this alone made it worth a whole tour. made the vince era easier to digest..thanks for the great memories boys. ill never forget those days

There is a certain sensitivity to his guitar playing (and voice) in later years that are non- existant in the 70's.
justlike2399 1 year ago
Can''t get over this particularly "haunting" version of Visions. I think this was his "Swan Song." Garcia at his best... even though the 95 shows themselves were not the best ever.
justlike2399 1 year ago
If you can count all the great shows of the `94-`95 years on your fingers, then you haven`t heard the music in a real long time!!That`s a ridiculous statement. The `70`s were awsome,Jerry was pretty much, tight, everynight. But,the late `80`s/ 90`s were also tremendous.Jerry played w/more heart and the raspiness of his aging vocal chords, put a soulful tinge on all of his tearful ballads, that weren`t an option back in the 70`s...
imissjg 1 year ago
I am, most likely, going to watch this several times in a row. Freaky part: I have this on VHS too. I saw this show with a "Mail order" tic, but it was so cheesy. The old dude thought the foil wAS A FANCY TIK, AND i WAS LET IN. tHE NIGHT BEFORE THIS, i GOT IN FOR THE LAST HALF OF THE SECOND SET. OOPS. SORRY 'BOUIT THE CAAPS

i think that mona lisa is pretty lame . . // especially for a song with some of the most gorgeous lyrics ever written. (never sung better . . by anyone . . than this version).
Laight4work 1 year ago
one of jerry's favorite dylan tunes. a great version, it's on "fallout from the phil zone". phil said it was one of jerry's best solos, "poignant". i traded the sunday ticket for this night, the sat, and missed the 1st unbroken chain. so it's always bitter sweet. but this has always tempered that. the 1st "all too much" helps too.
togaroc345 1 year ago

Get it - I mean IT - WE WERE THERE
hofferb49 1 year ago

Laight4work 2 years ago
Road tripped to Berkeley Community Theater for the Visions breakout and was in Salt Lake for its return 2/21/95, but if I had to compare the Visions, I would pick Salt Lake. It was Space >Visions >Sugar Mag.The show also included Salt Lake City and Just Want To Make Love. Yikes. Alabama breakeout on 2/19!

definitely not a typical sound on his guitar. never really heard him play like this. kind of cock eyed, but still very powerful. the solo is un utteringly poignant (as lesh put it). the guitar is that new one he had at the end . . not rosebud
Laight4work 2 years ago
What do you mean? Garcia used this tone on Lightning Bolt almost the whole time he used it. It also isn't very far from his Rosebud tone either. In late '93 his tone almost sounded like an acoustic/electric but he scrubbed that after the winter tour and went back to the tone you are hearing here.
