Ive just watched all 24 vids. Excellent series. Please USA trust in science - the rest of the world is watching this debate in disbelief. In Europe, UK, China, Japan and Australia, evolution is accepted as a matter of course. It is not an issue for us and religion and morals havent decayed - if anything we are more aware of the issues of social justice, peace and betterment of humanity. Life is like a blueprint. All the things are there for life on planet Earth to survive already. The human body is made so it can function, it didn't form randomly. If it did our bodies wouldn't work like they do. If we didn't get something as simple as honey bees on planet Earth, life would die within 4 years (Einstein said this). I will say this much: I didn't always believe in evolution. It took a well-educated science professor in my sophomore year to convince me. After that, I couldn't believe what I was missing out on! So much in this world I now want to understand - so much so I became a science major.

i learned that there are alot of things that support evolution, but this series didn't present any to me. It merely expressed a group of people's opinion.
They are expressing a serious point of view in this entire series that is under threat right now. There is a fundamentalist religious movement trying to force religion in the public school system.

Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" series is available at hulu, for free, in its entirety. Not exactly like this, but I think they are utterly fascinating and scientifically relevant. Michio Kaku did the "Time" series on the Science Channel. I think Zuke696 has it on his channel. I'd like more, too.

I'd like to see a graduate level class for aspiring scientists in how to summarize their results for lay people (e.g. science journalists, who rarely have any science background), how to avoid verbal tics, and some basic dos and don'ts of public appearances.

Sickle cell does not disprove evolution. Although it can cause death in some people, it is very effective against malaria. So the combating of malaria is more beneficial then death from the sickle cell.
And if a god made it, why would he make it so sickle cells could kill people?
Also: the only people suffering from sickle cell are those who have the allele on both chromosomes. Those who have only one allele get a purely beneficial advantage against malaria.
So that makes it even more likely to have evolved: evolution doesn't look ahead.
People who get one allele have an advantge, so they get selected out. And only when the amount of people with one allele becomes large, people with the disadvantage of two alleles becomes considerable.
At the time sickle cell evolved, it was purely beneficial.
I love how so many people attack science and its theories and principles so adamantly and "logically" but if you stick a light bulb in front of them and show them the light switch they shut up. Do they understand the principles of electricity that make that light work? no, so give up this holy crusade against the "made up theories" of science and start realizing how much we owe to it.
There is no evidence for intelligent design. In fact, there is evidence to the contrary, if you look at a lot of biological systems, organs and organisms the idea that they were designed is insane: There are too many examples of redundant parts, inefficient design etc, if they were designed they would not show these features. Its like designing a car with an extra set of wheels on the top for no reason, would a designer do that?
It would seem that freedom of religion and opinion is now under attack by the experts. If people don't see this more of as a threat than people suggesting that apes and humans don't share a common ancestor (an idea on which hasn't provided any scientific or technological advancements), they don't understand what freedom is.
What threat? Is just about teaching FACTS in schools. You have all the freedom to say what you want but if you can't backup your claims, does it means we have to teach them just to be fair? I can claim that the spaghetti monster created humans as well and use the same arguments that the creationists do... therefor I deserve to have my delusions teaches in class as well!
Anyone that accuses science of indoctrination misunderstands the fundamentals of science. Science by definition teaches reasoning and the ability to explain for ones self. Religion, by its very own ideals states quite clearly that to think for ones self is akin to evil. So the odds are in our favor.

If that is the ratio. (which is less than i would venture to say) that means you would need 1 billion billion handfuls to hold all the planets. and each handful has 1 planet with life. You really have no idea how many planets there are. and its astonishing when you start to grasp the numerical concept of billions of trillions.

I watched the whole series. It's quite good.
I will say this much: I didn't always believe in evolution. It took a well-educated science professor in my sophomore year to convince me. After that, I couldn't believe what I was missing out on! So much in this world I now want to understand - so much so I became a science major.
Point being, our society is poorly educated out of high school. With a bit more science education, I am sure many others will come to love that which they fear.

Although i don't think human should never be sent to space. There are certain things only humans can do and also the sense of accomplishment serves as a morale boost to the scientific community.

Ironically, it's also an indicator of the problem. Nobody is around who will tell scientists not to touch the microphone or not to wear stripes for a TV appearance (they create wild and busy patterns on screen).
I'd like to see a graduate level class for aspiring scientists in how to summarize their results for lay people (e.g. science journalists, who rarely have any science background), how to avoid verbal tics, and some basic dos and don'ts of public appearances.

Creationism is a belief, plain & simple. Faith is faith. It is NOT science, & it never will be. Even the Bible says "for we walk by faith, not by sight."
Many religions have creationist mythologies that their members believe in, for no other reason than their scriptures tell them to, & they choose to believe. A relationship with God, a belief in creationism - both are based on faith & only faith.
I will agree some scientists & regular folks could be a bit more tactful at pointing this out.

have never told an Atheist he was stupid. Matter fact I believe that Atheist are some of the world's most brilliant people. Sigmund Freud, Carl Sagan, C. S. Lewis<was an atheist but changed. Truth is this world is cold hearted. I believe in the Golden Rule. Biblical or not I try to treat people as I would like to be treated. That is why I do all I can not to be a rude jerk when I post. So people can't tell christians they are wrong, but Christians can go door to door, and tell everyone behind those doors that if they dont believe in Jesus they're going to hell.
Even aside from the door to door saviors, you have the evangelicals on TV, who almost never talk about anything else but Hell, to scare you into being good.

No, it doesn't. Logical thinking tries to figure out a natural answer, one that is capable of being found out by human means. God cannot be found by natural means, therefore it is supernatural, and therefore cannot be classified in a scientific field. This is not to say God doesn't exist.

Sickle cell does not disprove evolution. Although it can cause death in some people, it is very effective against malaria. So the combating of malaria is more beneficial then death from the sickle cell.
And if a god made it, why would he make it so sickle cells could kill people?

Also: the only people suffering from sickle cell are those who have the allele on both chromosomes. Those who have only one allele get a purely beneficial advantage against malaria.
So that makes it even more likely to have evolved: evolution doesn't look ahead.

People who get one allele have an advantge, so they get selected out. And only when the amount of people with one allele becomes large, people with the disadvantage of two alleles becomes considerable.

There is no evidence for intelligent design. In fact, there is evidence to the contrary, if you look at a lot of biological systems, organs and organisms the idea that they were designed is insane: There are too many examples of redundant parts, inefficient design etc, if they were designed they would not show these features. Its like designing a car with an extra set of wheels on the top for no reason, would a designer do that?
