Why is it impossible to get this on CD? I know the Tesla version is available but they've managed to suck the magic out of this song with their bland 80s hard rock sound, characterless vocals and whatever it is they managed to do to kill the chorus. The song itself is great though. It's probably the Jim Diamond touch.
I was a freshman in High School when this came out. Don't remember it but like everyone else I remember the Tesla version. Saw this on MTV30 for the first time and was shocked. At first I compared it to the Tesla version and laughed at it. Then the nostalgia factor sank in, and I stopped hearing his voice and the background music took over.
Just saw this for the first time in the recent MTV 30 footage on VH-1 Classic. Interesting to hear the original. I only knew the Tesla version, though I knew they didn't write it. I think Tesla hugely improved the song, however.
Great little ditty about a girl trying to start a career in adult film and her friend trying to talk her out of it. Pretty obvious with lines like "casting couch appointment made" and the line about "don't bring her down, she's a lot like you" which indicts people who look down on porn stars.
Some things to watch out for; Susie's # is 69 (get it?) but is 96 when they get to the dance contest.
@soylentkris How'd you go this was the premise behind the song? Wow, that just shattered the innocent, up-beat feeling behind Jim Diamond's lyrics, at least in my mind. XD I first saw this video during VH1 Classic's MTV 25th anniversary celebratino, and just saw it again on their 30th anniversary celebration...funny, yet WEIRD video. I too didn't get the fat chick and pickled onions. The actress who played Susie's was pretty hot too.
This band and tune was VERY popular in London in '81. I brought the album home and no one knew them, nor did they make a dent on the American market. Shame, very unique
@Stephensorrentino We listened to metal in the 1980´s and Tesla made this song a hit on the US market. Weird thing was back then nobody would have guessed or known Tesla did not write this song themselves. I found out 20 years later myself. But c hek the tesla video and see if you think they did a good job covering it.
I have this music video on videotape, when vh1classic rebroadcast this in aug. of 2006. PH.D is certainly a band not many people have ever of.
I like this orig. much better than the cover, which most people only know. My fav. line in the song is when jim diamond sings, "AND THE MUSIC MAKES HER FEEL SOO HOTT!" Love those vocals.
This one of those "forgotten MTV bands" of the early 80s! I can't even find a PHD album on amazon, and they have everything! I remember the singer was a strange cross between Leo Sayer and Peter Frampton, and his piano buddy looked like Nick Lowe in his frumpy moptop phase!
now the first album is available on cd for the first very longtimes at the occasion on the third album of phd called three , in this video i love the look of the saxophonist when she eat the egg
What's the deal with the pickled eggs?

I've always liked this song, and I love videos from the early 1980s, when MTV was just "feeling" it's way along. I really miss those days.

A prime example of the cover being far better than the original. This lacks any organic soul.
