Even through computer graphics, one can see the overwhelming advantage the Persians had in numbers in the battle. It makes one appreciate Alexander's victory more.
It's interesting to see Mark Urban guesting on a battle of ancient warfare - his specialty is on British military history.
@justin2242 if the show will come back and your ognna apply, make sure you pretend you never played tactical computer games. Because they like to hire people that have no skills on computer games but with tactics and strategy alone
From my experience, Roman Praetorian Legionaries or the roman guys that had those horse hair helmets were pretty awesome at breaking through Macedonian Phalanxes. I even experimented and found that they could break through.
is this match based on rome total war because if it is how do u get those kl looking alexander's units that look like spartans at the beggining of the vid?plz answer.thx
is this matc based on rome total war because if it is how do u get those kl looking greek units that u see in at the beggining of the vid? plz answer. thx
WHy did they never do a battle in which the persians win. such as the reign of Cyrus the great. for as we know, no matter how great alexander was, he was nothing compared to Cyrus.
not really. he inherited the best army in the world, and the best generals of the time and a ready to go campaign plan from his father. but when that plan ended, with the capture of the persian empire, he made his own plans and his army started to rebel, his generals started to betray him, and he started to lose or win pyrrhic battles
@GorinRedspear Since when???? He led the army through Persia himself. He fought the battles..He led the army...He made the decisions. In the same way that yeah Rome already had armies Caesar had to lead them himself though. Carthage already had money yet their commanders had to lead the army themselves. By the way Alexanders men didnt want to go on because of how much fighting they had already done...and because of the reports of how large the enemy army was including 100s of elephants.
@VOLK2234 i cant believe how many bullshits you said. First of all it shows clear that you know nothing about him.No greek languge, seriously? Just becase you have no history does not mean you have to steall of others. Why you just cant admit you are of slavic and albanian origin and maby some of you greek? Do you know that Alexander means protector of men in greek and Philip means friend of horses . But you would know that if you knew greek.
The teams lost 9 times out of 16 in the first season and three out of eight times in the second. You can lose if you do something really stupid (like Marathon, Pharsalus Chalons, and Watling Street), and sometimes even when you're decent (Cannae, Mons Graupinus, Adrianople, and Hastings)
No matter what happens in this battle, I'm going to give a salute to the players because Gaugamela is quite a beast to tame. Certainly not an easy battle to win.
You call those guys Macedonian hoplites? In reality they use no shields so how could they be hoplites???Hoplite name came from hoplon the large greek shield. You are too dumbass shut up
Macedonians were Greek, my friend. Not totally, but they were as close to them as Australians are to Brits. They also used the Greek language. Besides, in this battle it was clearly said that those hoplites were the Greek allies of Alexander.
Of course there was. Ancient Greek was actually the 'lingua franca' in Hellenistic times. In the Mediterranean sphere it was almost as popular as English is now worldwide.
@VOLK2234 And "I dont care for a battle of mices. "? You dump idiot he would not say that for anyone especialy his own people he was called the great not only because he was a good general but because he cared about his men. I have read every historical book writen from historians of the ancient times and nowhere writes those things . Also all of them included roman and others writes that he was greek and Macedonians where greeks too. If you call yourself Macedonians then you are greek.
Hoplites and Phalanxes are very diffferent in tactics.People is always confusing them.Phalanxes got small shields and large sarisas to push enemy with them.Hoplites pushed enemy with big shiels and spear and sword to stab the enemy.
Phalanx is the formation of the hoplites the Macedonian phalanx was built to improve attack while lessens defense phalanx is not a group of troops it is formation and hoplites are troops so the two are not compatible
I'm afraid you're wrong. Phalanx is the name of a formation, not a unit of troops. Phalangites are pikemen who fought in this formation. Do you see the difference now? ; ]
This shows the macedonian pikemen holding a large sheild with one arm and their pike with the other hand. In reality however, the macedonian pike, or sarissa, was so long that the infantrymen using it had to use both hands to keep it steady. They still had a shield, it was just strapped to their arm so their hand would be free to hold the pike.
Also, the macedonians never really used the Lambda on their shields. There is no real evidence of anybody but the Spartans using this to symbolize their hometown's region called Lakedaimon. Also, the units of spear-wielding infantry aren't called hoplites, but phalangites, since these are only named thus because of the shield's name, the hoplon. As Zupon94 said, the macedonian pikemen couldn't hold their shield, and thus they couldn't possibly hold a shield as big as a hoplon AND a spear.
Yeah, not only is it quite unprofessional of them, surely you'd think making their own cinematic would cost less than ripping a hole through space-time in order to obtain the footage.
(Which is an unnecessarily sarky way to say that the series was made before R:TW iself was released, never letalone the SPQR modification :P)
Aha, that makes sense, I heard something somewhere about it being from a trailer. Would've been a peculiarly impressive piece of work for a RTW mod, though looking at the current Roma Surrectum 2 previews, I wouldn't be surprised...

Very few people know that 30.000 Greeks were fighting on the Persian side, against Alexander.
In one occasion, the commanders reported Alexander that the Greeks from the Macedonian side and the Greeks from Persian side started to fight.
Alexander replied:
"I dont care for a battle of mices. "
