I like the way the 1999 Animal Farm Movie (Starring Pete Postlethwaite) has been edited for this amazing track (Dogs - Best track on the album) Both the song and the film is brilliant. Pink Floyd's Animals (1977) inspired by George Orwell's Animal Farm (Published in 1945). Two masterpieces melded together. Pigs - Leaders. Dogs - Obediant Law enforcers. Sheep (and all other animals) - Followers.
no I don't understand those concepts you speak of. I just thought that the study that was done by the Russians were interesting. They were trying to figure out why wolves could not be domesticated. It was some pretty interesting stuff. Although a fox could after so many generations. It was something I had seen on discovery channel.
the latest experiments show that wolves are in the dna of every dog but nothing is found of what the wolf was breeded with to make a dog and, make it domesticated.
@TheLittlelucky why would you need to breed a wolf with any other animal in order to get dogs? do you even understand basic concepts of evolutionary science?
@scarwarsnow No it is not the dogs fault. If you have read "Animal Farm". You would have learned that it's the pigs. Because the pigs enslave other animals and the dogs are feirce they get more food and water (Dogs and pigs get more). So it is the pigs fault for bribeing the dogs.
THIS ALBUM WAS THE END OF FLOYD AS WE ALL KNEW THEM...I KNEW ROCK WAS COMING TO AN END WHEN BLACK SABBATH BROKE UP AND PINK FLOYD WENT DISCO -THE WALL WHAT A JOKE...MAN THIS ALBUM WAS ON ANOTHER PLANET...THIS ALBUM TOOK ME ON A TRIP AS WELL AS ALL THE FLOYD FROM THIS ALBUM BACK...
yep, to everything you said. the wall is what it is, but even the comments on songs from the wall dont match the passion animals tunes elicit. and to be frank, (you can be shirly) the best songs on the wall, with the exception of outside the wall, were davids songs.
i liked mother , because david dragged out the good stuff on that solo, like on comefortably numb.
its my belief that roger hated animals because dave stole the show, and roger wont have that,
@TheTayedrums Interesting perspective, however I think you are wrong. The Wall was a great album. Go back and listen to the song Echos. I think that one song set the stage for every subsequent album Floyd did. You can hear traces of that one song in Wish You Were Here, Darkside, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut. Floyd dipped for me in Division Bell. I am not a big fan of The Final Cut, but as I get older I like it more. But I do see you point, just think you are wrong about the album
The next time N.A.S.A. sends a Telescope into far reaches of space. A copy of this should be transmitted 24/7 from it's antenna to the rest of the universe.
Who was born in a house full of pain. Who was trained not to spit in the fan. Who was told what to do by the man. Who was broken by trained personnel. Who was fitted with collar and chain. Who was given a pat on the back. Who was breaking away from the pack. Who was only a stranger at home. Who was ground down in the end. Who was found dead on the phone. Who was dragged down by the stone. I Just love these lines!
@Rojero01 I agree man, but sometimes i wonder how we got from this to baby repeated over and over again by he who sould not be mentioned in the presence of Pink Floyd, or any music at all.
@lpz2 i love porcupine tree but they aren't as "universal" as PF: i think about "the wall" social and psycologic metaphor, dark side, and off course they haven't powerful visuals.
@TheBanner777 But Porcupine tree has more variation in their music, and they're still making music for today. ts just that they need more recognition.

@tyroneSloth Well the point of the the entire song is quite transcendent and profound. You're supposed to listen to the notations they are using. Listen to it really carefully and you'll understand why it's so long.
@tyroneSloth I don't know if that was sarcasm, but yes. It's profound. Pay attention to the two narrators. Gilmour is supposed to be the manipulative dog, and Waters is the self aware dog. Listen to the lyrics.
@jesse5852 Yes it was sarcasm, my apologies for that. To tell you the truth, I also found the song very profound when it was first released. I am not debating whether it is a good song or not, I agree that it is, but I feel that there is a lot of filler there that doesn't do anything for it except make it very long.
@tyroneSloth Well let me recommend a book that goes and deals with all the concepts of the DSOTM to The Final Cut. It's "Which One's Pink" from Phil Rose.
If you read it, you'll understand it a bit better. Have you read it?
to sum up every post on every floyd video/song put on here. Pink Floyd is the greatest fucking band to ever grace this world with their music. I am so happy that i was born in a generation that i got to enjoy listening to the music these guys put out. To young to have seen any live shows, but i bet they are the best thing since sliced bread. God damn its great to be born between 1950-1990. Me being born in 86'. Every song they put out doesn't matter which it is, it's probably sex to your ears.
@TheeChippy I'm in your boat. Their music brings me to my knees. They are flat out, the greatest musical entity to ever grace the earth, and their instruments and voices will fill my ears till the day I get dragged down by the stone.
Do you hear a whistle at around 2:35? I always come close to crying at that part... to me it sounds like a man is calling his dog, but little does he know that his dog is drowned, dragged down by the stone...
seriously...although almost every pink floyd cd is awesome, 'animals' is forgotten and way underrated. the lyrics on this cd speak more truth than anything ever written...so sick.
That's what I always thought too. "Dogs" being most of the average joes, which is most of us, and is the longest cut; "Pigs" being people in power, & lastly "Sheep," well that is self explainitory. This is my favorite Pink Floyd LP although I love them all.
The song addresses the rise and fall of greedy people who are so focused on their careers and profits that they have tuned everything else in their life out, which comes back to bite them in the ass.
A capitalist song doesn't really fit in with literature about the Russian Revolution, I have no idea how someone managed to link the two. Yes, they're both based on animals. That's about it.
Part one of this song is very clearly about Animal Farm.
Oh, and linking Capitalism with the Communist Revolution is very easy and often done. And I don't think this is so much a Capitalist song as it is a critique of Capitalism.
Just because it was written in a Capitalist nation doesn't mean it supports Capitalism.
From Revanlation: "A capitalist song doesn't really fit in with the literature...."
From Me: "I don't think this is so much a Capitalist song as it is a critique...."
I'm just using your words.
To your second point, I would certantly agree with you, but I was referring speciffically to Part one of this video, which has numerous and glaringly obvious references to Animal Farm. Pt. 2, perhaps not so much.
@Revanlation Well from what ive gathered, the idea was that while Animal Farm dealt with the excesses of Communism, Animals (and in this case Dogs) does the same with capitalsim. But beyond that, no, nothing links them
animal farm doesnt critique communism, it critiques the decay of communism and the creation of an authoritarian state. The events of Animal Farm tell of the degeneration of the soviet union and the struggle of power between Trotsky and Stalin
Know what you mean.Although the video has animals in it it doesn't really corespond with the metaphors this album addresses.Animal Farm(the movie this is culled from) is a metaphor about the Russian revolution and makes some of the timeless, immutable observations about human nature that Floyd is also addressing here but, very a very slim pretext. Still I suppose it would/might work if you're a bit spaced out.
Yea, i always took this album as a capitalistic animal farm, which is what Roger was going for i do believe. ( i Have nothing against capitalism...just a great observation..."I use to be a dog" as ROger said. Me too....
ANIMALS is definitely a fine piece of art, funny enough, not well recieved by the critics at the time...then again, what do they know? Being a transition work between DSOTM and The Wall, it reflects Waters growing influence that peaked at The Wall... this song in particular is a masterpiece, one of my top 10 Pink Floyd favorites, and hard to say against solos like Comfortably Numb or the whole Sorrow which is best...depends on oneself´s mood I guess
@themusicdr totally agree, not much comes close, i am sad that i cannot possibly see anyone, or band , filling the gap... i mean , damn this music made me really think as a young bloke, but what do the young get now????
@boazandjiacinth indeed. useless homogonized trash where the only good thing is the fit looking birds and v soon that becomes jarring b'cos the "music" is so nauseating
@boazandjiacinth... we get TOOL!i love pink floyd..one of my favorite bands..no doubt but tool is def my next favorite band and they are is close as it comes to this caliber of music now ..im 32...they are def influenced by this band...check em out...especially theyre later work..TOOL..PINK FLOYD...ONE IN THE SAME
@boazandjiacinth WE GET TOOL!!THEYRE THE ONLY THING THAT COMPARES TO PINK FLOYD AND THEYRE VERY GOOD...CHECK THEM OUT ....TOOL AND PERFECT CIRCLE.SAME SINGER FOR BOTH BANDS
@tacomonster98 yes there is just SOMETHNG about it, the music the lyrics (some of them v telling eg "you have to be trusted by the ppls that you lie to") and just overall magnificence
absolutely right! I was lucky to see the concert live! Best one ever! it really sent my mind to where its never been before! Pink Floyd concerts are all of the best music ever and passing pot around :)

Revanlation 2 years ago
Part one of this song is very clearly about Animal Farm.
Oh, and linking Capitalism with the Communist Revolution is very easy and often done. And I don't think this is so much a Capitalist song as it is a critique of Capitalism.
Just because it was written in a Capitalist nation doesn't mean it supports Capitalism.
Overcher 2 years ago
lol. I don't really understand how you came to the conclusion that I thought the song supported capitalism, quite the opposite.
Just because you can use a metaphor to link dogs and businessmen doesn't mean it has anything to do with animal farm. Seriously.
Revanlation 2 years ago
From Revanlation: "A capitalist song doesn't really fit in with the literature...."
From Me: "I don't think this is so much a Capitalist song as it is a critique...."
I'm just using your words.
To your second point, I would certantly agree with you, but I was referring speciffically to Part one of this video, which has numerous and glaringly obvious references to Animal Farm. Pt. 2, perhaps not so much.
Have a good day. (If you wish)
Overcher 2 years ago
@Revanlation Well from what ive gathered, the idea was that while Animal Farm dealt with the excesses of Communism, Animals (and in this case Dogs) does the same with capitalsim. But beyond that, no, nothing links them
gibsonsc91 1 year ago
animal farm doesnt critique communism, it critiques the decay of communism and the creation of an authoritarian state. The events of Animal Farm tell of the degeneration of the soviet union and the struggle of power between Trotsky and Stalin

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy
Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.

The Floyd album Animals is written after the Animal Farm book by George Orwell...so it works to an extent

Way to ruin the solo, lol.

Still I suppose it would/might work if you're a bit spaced out.
spizzardo 2 years ago 2

@rogervillarr true, i just think lyrically, well, it says so much, not to say your mentions dont, they are truly ALL masterpieces

Listen carefully and take note because you're listening to the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. Proof that there must be a G-d.

No it hasn't, you just need to keep looking.
The good stuff is no longer out on a platter for all to see, its now buried away and has to be sought out.
