live on portland. been here over 2 years and love it. it does have its ways but it makes it a special place and a place to get fond of. With places like dannys hardware and pubs like the cove house inn what else do you need
This takes me back! I was at the Naval Base, HMS Osprey, in Portland in late 1978 when a massive flood broke the banks at Chesil Beach. The sea came right through Chiswell and all across the Causeway and half way across the airfield of the RN Air Station, where I worked in the Captain's Office. They said it was a freak event, it couldn't happen again. But two months later, we had an even bigger flood! That was when they started thinking about permanent defences, which were eventually built.
@DorsetRod I'm a Portlander, my Dad was at Osprey too and I remember not being able to get off the island many times! I remember my mum driving me to school and seeing the men sweeping all the shells and stones off the roads :)
@Furrylittlebumblebee It's a lovely place, people tend to put Portland down but it has stupendous views out to sea and back to the coast, especially across the Chesil Beach and the bay. On a clear day you can see right across to Seaton in Devon. I loved walking round the island on a sunny day, and once lived in Fortuneswell halfway up the hill with a view of Chesil Beach. I still go back there when I am in the area, it draws you in like a magnet, there is nowhere on earth like it. :-)
@DorsetRod It certainly is beautiful, we lived in Reforne up top. I get fed up with people putting it down, visitors come from all over to see Chesil! And going up to the Bill when it's stormy, nothing like being smacked in the face with sea foam :) lol
@Furrylittlebumblebee Yes, the sea foam on a stormy day at the Bill is most invigorating! And not forgetting Portland Dough Cake mmmmmm. But don't say that word (r*****ts) on the island i.e. those furry creatures - we know it's bad luck...lol
Great slideshow. I remember a more recent one, say 20 or so years ago,i was about 17 back then, thats befor the beach was raised and before the flood defence was put in play ( that long pit ). We use to have SNOW storms that lasted days or even weeks, floods nearly every winter and spring tides and very long hot sumers. Now all these are gone or hardly apear, i wonder why ?
