Thin Lizzy made their version in the 70's and the lyrics are somewhat different to those recorded by The Dubliners. It is the Thin Lizzy version that Metallica covered.

I remember hearing this in 1972 while sitting in my mom's car, and just freakin' LOVING it - distorted guitar-driven rock! (I doubt that my mom loved it...) There are two "types" of Whiskey in the jar. The traditional one, recorded by numerous professional artists since the 1950s (among them, yet only in the 1960s, the Dubliners). And there is the almost totally recomposed one, originally recorded by Thin Lizzy. The latter definitely is my favourite. Metallica seamlessly covered the recomposed second type. I don't care because it sounds great...
