  • "I don't know where Metallica's inspiration comes from, but if it's from me, then I fucked up" -Keith Richards Thumbs up so everyone see

  • I first heard this song on the American version of the show "Life On Mars." I don't remember the scene anymore, but I remember this song fit it perfectly. That show had a fantastic soundtrack, and introduced me to a lot of overlooked songs from the '70s.

  • my ex said: wow this is the best cover of a metallica song ever

    R.I.P Jackie (1983 - 2012)

  • Eventually I came to appreciate a classic version of a song for just that. But then I'm older. generally speaking.

  • no matter how good the metallica version is it will never be anywhere near as good as the original version!

  • R.I.P Phil Lynott. there's not a day that goes by that i don't say that.

by the way Battlefield 3 rules!!!!! this should be the intro music for it.

  • Cover??? this song was created by Thin Lizzy !!! isn't it?

  • @BillyJoe009 It's a old folk song. I think Thin Lizzy are responsible for the first rock arrangement, including the guitar solos of course. The final verse (here I am with a ball n chain) also sounds added to me.

  • @BillyJoe009

No it's a drinking song or something like that.

Meaning no one really knows who wrote it or who sang it first.

  • @nikolas382632 an irish rebel band called 'The wolfe tones' sung this song.... im not sure if they were the original songwriters or what not but thats where i first heard the song

  • @nikolas382632 the dubliners were the first ones ??

  • @FingerElevenRULEZ The Dubliners were the first to make a modern recording of this Irish traditional (it dates back to the 17th century) in the 60's.

Thin Lizzy made their version in the 70's and the lyrics are somewhat different to those recorded by The Dubliners. It is the Thin Lizzy version that Metallica covered.

  • thin lizzy are legends>> f@@k your metallica head banging sh@t. MON THIN LIZZY

  • Unbelievably pretty tune.:)

  • Great song to prepare you for a night of heavy drinking, stippers and cocaine! LOL I lied about the last 2 but still c'mon.........C'MON!!!

  • 18 idiots was here

  • I like Metallica better than Thin Lizzy(and Metallica is my third favorite band) but this version is much better than Metallica's version. That's not saying muchthough, as Whiskey in the jar is Metallica's worst song, but whatever.

  • 10% of all the comments in this video: About how great this song is.

85% of all the comments in this video: People making annoying, overused jokes about the dislikes.

  • 18 reasons to wear a condom

  • @sibsthc19 fag

  • Epic song. I do think Metallica's version is better though, maybe because its heavier and that what I like. Oh well epic anyway!

  • Metallicas version is okay but this is f**king phenomenal!

  • You must be a fucking stupid twat, you must be some little pupe-less gay metalica t shirt wearing bitch!!! Thin Lizzy are legends, phil linnot has the most original voice in the world! fuck offfffff

  • @Spanker20 WHAT THE FUCK?

  • I love this song! :)

Guys u are a little annoying with these "haters jokes"

  • for the 18 dislikers: I'm sure God is sorry for what he did

  • 18 beer drinkers use PLASTIC cups.

  • the 18 sad people who gave this a thumbs down should be dragged out of their homes and publicly executed. this is rock and roll at its greatest

  • rest in peace you legend

  • 18 guys dont have a jar to fill it with whiskey!!

  • 18 people liked the Metallica Version =D

  • Haha the guitars remind me of Television.

  • meh not bad but i prefer the dubliners version and the lyrics fit better...since when did molly rhyme with penny.....come on people its all about jenny

  • totally different trust me.... so jus listen to the damn song... This song is Original to Thin Lizzy even though it is a "Cover" technically its alot diff then any other cover so yea if you think bout it not really a cover of the Dubliners' an the Dubliners' have a diff tune to them an its alot faster...

  • mmk, for all those ppl that think this is a cover of the Dubliners' if u actually listen to the song of the Dubliners' they say Jenny and not Molly and the Dubliners' have like 3 other verses to their song and its ALOT faster then Thin Lizzy and the "Whiskey in the Jar" that Metalica did was a cover of the Thin Lizzy... so I urge you to listen to the song and also.... "I produced my pistol for they stole my rapier" Dubliners'... "I first produced my pistol, then i produced my rapier" Thin Lizzy.

  • the only reason people don't like this version is cuz they are so use to the metallica's version.... thin lizzy way better then fuckin metallica and the dubliners. good job lizzy!!!!

  • @mikelitoris90

ummm. The reason Metallica even covered this song is because they meant it to be a tribute to Thin Lizzy (one of James Hetfield's favorite bands) btw, I like both versions. there's just a different feel to a great song.

  • ddeeeaaaaahhhhnn da duuddaaa daa ddeeeeahn - the guitar has no nationality - it's either good or it's not ... and this is gooood... why do people care so much that this is a dubliners cover. thin lizzy fuckin own this tune

  • Most underrated band in history. They will always be underrated until they are known as the #1 Band in History

  • 18 disliked this classic, really are stupids they don´t know the good music.....

  • Ive never heard this version until tonight but I actually like it better than the Metallica version.. Thanks for posting it..

  • It's a crime that Thin Lizzy isn't better known stateside.

  • NO LYRICS!!!!!!

  • @mrmaticuluos lol discription..

  • I remember hearing this in 1972 while sitting in my mom's car, and just freakin' LOVING it - distorted guitar-driven rock! (I doubt that my mom loved it...) It was released as a single in Europe - not sure about stateside. I guess that was original guitarist, Eric Bell, on guitar... Thanks for the upload, morgie8 !

  • badass song....:)

  • god bless thin lizzy

  • I grew up on this music. Great stuff... Brings me back to a better place and some fantastic memories.

  • Eargasm <3 Thin Lizzy are awesome... ENJOY!

  • Axl Rose is very of Thin Lizzy =]

  • there was also a version of this song done in the sixties by the group the seekers

  • @nicoleglacken wow u would really beilieve wikipedia u are one dumb shit

  • @drifted38 Wow you really sound like a cunt! Not just Wikipedia 'dumb shit'! Common Knowledge! sort out your issues asshole

  • Only one bad part: 5:45, but i love 0:00...i wish YouTube could swap the dislike button with a larger replay button

  • There are two "types" of Whiskey in the jar. The traditional one, recorded by numerous professional artists since the 1950s (among them, yet only in the 1960s, the Dubliners). And there is the almost totally recomposed one, originally recorded by Thin Lizzy. The latter definitely is my favourite. Metallica seamlessly covered the recomposed second type. I don't care because it sounds great...

  • I could marry this song.

  • @Sprattelnalle ..lol...congratulations..i hope you'll both be very happy:)

    p.s.great comment to a song

  • @ukgirlonce

Well thank you! Whiskey in the jar and I will go to our honeymoon in two weeks. We.

  • @Sprattelnalle ...lol!!!

  • The guitar player's vibrato is just SICK.

  • This is a traditional Irish song, both Thin Lizzy and Metallica are versions of this song. It's not a cover becouse the original has a different lyric. But really cool song and awesome guitar

  • Neither Thin Lizzy Or Metallica Wrote this song, the amazing song was written and sung by a traditional Irish band call The Dubliners, Look Up The Original.

  • @nicoleglackin Wasn't written by them either. It's a traditional piece. Ages old.

  • @DealerCamel (I'm Irish) Well I Was Told By Wikipedia And My Music Teacher as at the moment we are studying traditional Irish music that Whiskey in the jar was written by the Dubliners and i think i will believe them over you.

  • @nicoleglackin As you wish. Have a nice day.

  • WTF? 16 disliked this classic? Are you mental people?

  • @merrycrisis 16 stoopid with deaf ears.

  • @merrycrisis No, they are just Metallica fans.

  • @napalmman420 ^^^^

    lol :D

  • @napalmman420 I'm a metallica fan... I'm not disliking this. haha

  • no one knows who actually wrote this song its been around for decades just like the song what should we do with the drunkin sailor the origins of it are rather unknowen

  • Thin Lizzy sings with soul and Metallica sings with power and anger. Which makes this song great because decades later poeple still wanna hear the song. Both great versions

  • Ignoring all the o ther hate full messages. great song. obviously this version is prettier. Metallica's version kicks ass. and instead of being bothered by it, see it for what it is. a tribute to a band they consider very important

  • this is amazing..

  • Thin Lizzy sang this decades before Metallica anyway!!

  • Bands like Thin Lizzy and Slade do not get the props they deserve. They are hidden gems.

  • its hard to sing this version cause im used to the tempo from metallicas :D

  • I like BOTH versions, that's right, YOU HEARD ME!! IT'S ONLY AN IRISH ANTHEM!!!

  • i love this version! personally kicks the crap outta metallica BUT thats just me :)

  • They SHOULD be BASHING Metellica's EXTREMELY limpid version...I remember when Metpukeila came out with their version and I freaked that they STOLE it from the IRISH "Tin "Lizzy's Kick AZZ original from EARLY 70's!!...WTF

  • Phil Lynott's vocals were so unique and thin lizzy so off the wall, you got to love them. Maybe Metallica and everyone else who covered this liked either Lizzy or just the song? But who cares this version is just ace.

  • This song rocks my world.

  • Comment removed

  • the best version is thin lizzy

  • better than metalica but who cares? metalica stil the shizzle

  • I dont really like Metallica, and I think they completely ruined the song.

  • @RunTyRun5 Actually, people say that MetallicA cover is better but, i like them both! xD

  • @p3druptt I dont know what to say to that, I think people that like Metallica will listen to any crap they put out, perfect example, look at there last album, I think it was Black Ice? I might be wrong but that was the worst album I've ever heard in my life.

  • @RunTyRun5 They dont have any album called Black Ice. Their last album was Death Magnetic, and if that is shit for you , you seriously need to go to the doctor, or just go listen to it

  • @p3druptt Nawwww, the only song Metallica made that was any good at all was sad but true, the rest of there songs are garbage.

  • @RunTyRun5 Black Ice is an AC/DC album lol. The last album they put out was Death Magnetic. And although Metallica is probably my favorite band, I hate the stuff they did in the 90s and early 2000s. I do like death magnetic though. If you want to hear a really bad metallica album, check out St. Anger.

  • In this, Phil definitly sounds like a mix of Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. God rest them all.

  • @spxmet You took the best guitarist in the world and the worst person in music in its entirety and put them together? you sicken me. Kurt deserved to die. Period.

  • @guitarist1d99 Such hate! We're trying to have a good time here.

  • @spxmet We can all have a good time without Kurt Cobain involved. We seem to be doing a pretty good job of that so far. The differences between Phil Lynott and Jimi Hendrix are their descent, instrument, and which way they play the instrument. They sort of look alike, yes. The difference between Phil Lynott and Kurt Cobain are that we can understand Phil, and people respect Phil. Idiots, not people, respect a manic-depressive drug addict who blew his head off.

  • fucking great. metallicas version was great. but this version is perfect

  • Great song, hear it with the dubliners

  • Both Thin Lizzy's and Metallica's versions are so to say 'covers',

as the original is Irish traditional song with 1st known version performed by The Dubliners in early 50s

  • @mmudaxx the dubliners formed in 1962... so that is wrong, but the earliest known version is from 1951 by Seamus Ennis

  • @mmudaxx no shit sherlock

  • @mmudaxx there were many artists even before the dubliners... as i recall it's some kind of legend (this song)

and it's not actually known who wrote it :)

  • @mmudaxx The music's original to Thin Lizzy though. It's not really a "cover". :P

  • @siddey1 ...A cover of a Dubliners' song :L

  • @mikusmarthu You obviously didn't understand me.

  • @mmudaxx what the fuck are you on about - the dubliners didn't cover this until the 60's - stop talking bollox

  • @iampunitan I have made a typo - I know it's actually early 60-ies but you can't edit your comments once you post them - so stop moaning and watch your mouth

  • totally awesome..best Irish Hard N'Heavy band

  • Fuck the metallica version. He sings like he has VD in his throat. Yeah, that's right, don't criticize Thin Lizzy. Grow up fucker. Metallica, bullshit.

  • I like the Metallica version the best, because I'm a fanboy and because it was the first version of WITJ I heard. But Thin Lizzy is boss, no doubt about that.

  • thin lizzy live at brazil

  • Seeing them with judas priest and black label society on cocktober 30th...so stoked.

  • It has feeling that goes right through u. They both did an awsome job on this song

  • i think this is better overall, but i prefer the instrumentals in metallica's, even tho i hate kirk, hes shite

  • i like thin lizzy, but i like metallica's version of this better. let the flaming commence!

  • @cowboyfromkettins WTF tut tut tut.

  • como pelean las dos versiones son muy buenas

  • The two songs Metallica has covered that everyone knows are Turn the Page and this. They took Bob Seger's song and made it better, they did the same thing with this.I'm sorry, the guy from Thin Lizzy singing this version sounds like he's struggling to move a couch of something, and he's completely off tempo. The Metallica version with Lars on guitar is better.

  • @OldskoolGP lars on guitar?!

  • @oddysseuss I think he must have meant that Lars was sitting on a guitar while doing the percussion track for Metallica's unimaginative cover of 'whisky'.

What else could he have possibly meant?

  • @OldskoolGP Get a grip. I like Metallicas stuff (or some of it, St Anger was pants) but their version of this classic just doesn't ccompare. This is SO much better

  • this is in the descrition "Great cover by thin lizzy from 1972" isn't this the original?

  • @oilfighter21 I just noticed that,, Yes it is the original! Although it may also be based on an irish folk song, someone correct me if im wrong.

i suppose he could be saying its a cover because of the folk song connection?

  • @MonkeyHunch @oilfighter21 nobody knows who the original writer is but yes, it is an old irish folk song.

  • @MonkeyHunch This isn't the original but it did bring this song into rock.

  • Fuck U2, Thin Lizzy is real Irish music.

  • @PrivateSnowballTFC FINALLY, SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS MUSIC!! :D

  • SHUT UP!!!!! STOP TALKING OF METALLICA AND LET US ENJOY THIN LIZZY!!!!!!!!!

  • @gomongio yup what you said

  • I really cant stand Metallica. Thin Lizzy are better in ever aspect including: Talent and their whole rock and roll style in both their music and personal lives.

Metallica in my opinion are over rated and dull and have nowhere near as much passion.

  • Thin Lizzy are just great....

  • 16 people need a whack.

  • The beginning reminds me of The Legend of Zelda theme

  • 16 people who do not appreciate music and not even the whiskey

  • Wtf i came to this awesome Thin Lizzy song and Fucking see the Top Comments are Bashing Metallica? WTF! its only a fucking cover... GET OVER IT!.

  • @MegadethMagnetc and actually this is even a cover as well... Soooooo.

  • @MetallicAfan1071 yea i know ON TOP OF THAT! lol they're both good though

  • @MegadethMagnetc you get over it--and try charm school--you coarse ignorant sod

  • @JudyILove LOL? okay? sure lmao ;)

  • @MegadethMagnetc Metallica didn't even write it -.-

  • @jayson201 Neither Did Thin Lizzy!!

  • @nicoleglackin I know, I know. Kinda like The Animals didn't write House of the Rising Sun. :P

  • everyone Irish has done this song, be they professional musicians or just singing it in a Irish pub somewhere in the world........:)

GREAT TUNE and Thin Lizzy really do it justice

  • i'd love to see the dropkick murphys cover this song

  • im only 25 i always figured lizzy wrote this song lol didnt realise i was such a dumbass lol

  • @bigb2009100 Don't be too hard on yourself, I know people older than you that think it's an original Metallica song.

  • I can't say that this is better than metallica's version or the opposite!

If sound is good then the song can be good too! It's everyone's opinion!

  • the originals always better

  • @horseylassx1 this is a folk song, nobody knows who did the original

  • @Maetel22 oh really? cool

  • thin lizzy died when phil lynott did.

  • Damned if this song doesn't make one want to start a band and follow the formula here: great rocking melody and telling a tale with your heart as well as voice.

Of all the bars, bowling alleys, and other venues where a band was playing to an apathetic audience, I don't think it possible that Thin Lizzy couldn't have stopped a crowd dead in its tracks by opening with this song.

  • all of u guys wrong METALLICA'S version is 1000X BETTER!!!!

  • @NemikOne503

    Opinion!!!!

  • @NemikOne503 Spoken like a true metallifag.

  • @type87randomXD fuk u bitch

  • @NemikOne503 L2type bro.

  • Yea, it better than metallica, but I appreciate for there own different reasons. I LOVE the raw vintage sound and fret work, you don't hear that any more. I LIKE the untamed grit of metallica, a sound that is dieing out as well. All being drowned out teeny boppers and crappy rap. Takes ya back to a time when Rock n' Roll was Rock n' Roll, and Metal was Metal.

  • why does everyone fucking argue over whos version is better..... everyone can have their own opinion, are people really that sad that they are gunna argue with strangers on youtube about whos version is fucking better! shut up and enjoy the fucking song

  • I personally prefer the metallica verison, feels like that one has more feeling in it to me

  • ERIC BELL done this song justice - taking it from Irish Trad to ROCK and Thin Lizzy / Phil Lynott made the song what it is today ! ALL the rest are RUBBISH!!!

  • metallica is still the better version. even the dubliners said so .

  • metallica is my favorite band and to tell the truth i like this better more soul in it, more feelings

  • @Grunge11063 Kirk could've really tore into the opening solo, don't know why he didn't. Both versions are suh-weet!

  • @Grunge11063 Very true !!! But Metallica rocks too, on the other side; This thin Lizzy cover has more sole and emotion and feeling, makes me realy happy, Respect and Peace !

  • @Grunge11063 well if thin lizzy were to do it again it would be wayyy better. this is 1972. do you think humans evolve slow? no.
