tv came to our mining city mount isa in australias outback in1971 and this great great canadian series was shown on school holidays in 72/73 in the afternoons. we'd be playing cricket outside or out bush but would always make it inside to watch nic and relic trying to outdo each other. this was our first look at canada and this aussie is still hugely impressed - a legendary tv series
Not nice to say, but,.... my brothers always called my mom "relic" haha That was their way of saying she was an old coot! I don;t think she appreciated the name much, but, she took it for what it was worth...zilch!
My friend's mom was on this and she was an extra in one of the episodes. She said she was in a caf'e and it had to be molly's reach. I am pulling my hair out trying to find that episode.
To this day, myself and a group of movie-buff friends, still refer to certain films as having the "beachcomber effect" - meaning the film is kind of campy and a little cheesy, production values might be somewhat low, and intellectually you think "I shouldn't be liking this." But, nevertheless, it still draws you in, you find yourself caring about the characters, and are unable to stop watching because you need to see how it all turns out.
Just like kingazzaman said, I grew up watching this way back in the 70's, then the suck-holes at the ABC went & put on some other crap which I can't remember (irony LOL) but I've always loved it! I'm glad that they made it & one day I hope to get over there, that's one country I'd love to see!!!
@Dodgedeora Exactly the episode I have always remembered most! Ya, some old guy had it in his yard. Wasn't Jesse lost or something, or wandering around outside of town? Can't recall, but it was a good episode. The guy who played Jesse lived near my sister in Mission BC for a while. He wasn't too friendly, so my sister baked him and his wife some treats and brought them over.
I only caught a few eps. on Sun TV a few years ago. What a great show. Thanks for posting behind the scenes info. No thanks to the CBC for the long delaying in bringing it to DVD, if at all.
Hey can anyone help me out by finding out if the show Beach Combers had a band by the name "CARRIER NATION" on one of their episodes??? My father was a part of that band and has passed on 13 years ago and I thought it would be nice to see him if he was actually caught on tape. So please find out!! I don't know how else to find out but ask!
I wish they would release all of the shows on DVD/VHS. I grew up in Chicago, IL well after they stopped filming the series and became hooked on this show. What a cast of characters. Shows such as this are missed.

I couldn't stand this show as a kid. It came on after Disney world.

@jabmalassie I took it for granted as a child myself, and I remember at one point when it was Disney, then the Muppets, followed by Beachcombers.

Instead of showing episodes of Jepordy and Wheele of Fortune CBC should be playing reruns of The Beachcombers. Maybe then I might watch that station.

I loved it when I was a kid. I don't think I always understood what was happening, but it was a great show for characters and nice aesthetics.

The last episode should have had guest appearances by Tommy Hunter, Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray and the Band.

Quite a superb video. I'm not the biggest fan of The Beachcombers actually. I'm referring to Wei Chen, rare clip of this CBC news anchor.
