Stern was a Russian Jew whose family came to US when he was 8. Later, he almost single handedly save the Met in NYC, one o fAmerica's greatest Cultural Icons, from the sharks who wanted to tear it down and build a pool hall or some friggin thing in it's place. So he's a hero as well as a great violinist. See Wikipedia.
