Aw, bless Catharine Buchanan ... they didn't even spell her name right! :-) It's misspelled "Catherine" on the single and on Jellybean's album. If you're researching her, look for CathArine Buchanan.
This song is a great track from 1985. I have fond memories with this song from my high school days. Jellybean rocked back in the day and to me he still rocks!!! Thank God for You Tube and people posting videos of songs like this. It is the music that keeps the memories alive!!!
When I was a Disc Jockey in Corpus Christi, TX (in the Navy), I used to love mixing this song with other songs. And even though Madonna was a background singer, it shows that she did whatever it took to make a song nice...have always and always will be a Madonna fan.
This song has practically been forgotten. I remember it came out when i was in high school right around the time of Like A Virgin, the song was done when Madonna was a nobody & when it was released it was a clear attempt at capitalizing on her (then) current success. Like so many kids at that time, i was Madonna mad & bought anything that had her name on it. & yes Catherine Buchanan IS doing the lead in this song. Madonna is doing the chorus some lead & the hook.
Patrick Leonard and Nile Rogers were mostly the ones helping Madonna with formulating her earlier sound. Jellybean a little bit as well - however you will learn that Madonna actually had written almost all of her lyrics and dictated the overall feel of her debut album - because if you listen to Pre-Madonna, there are demo versions of many of her later songs written and composed entirely by her. Much of the synthesizer and drum machine work was even programmed by her in an empty studio bathroom!
This is "MAD FRESH!" I haven't heard this in years, I'm only 32, but I know about Jellybean Benitez since my dad had 1 of his records, Madonna's, Run DMC, all Hip-Hop, Rock & Roll, Pop, U name it he's got it! Anyway, I gotsta rock this while I'm teaching some of tha youngstas ta "Breakdance" & folks my age 2. I'm doing a comp of 80's hits that have or haven't been heard in years just 2 really dance 2. Plus, it helps educate 2day's youngens on "POP" culture of the 1980's. Thx 4 this! Peace!
awesome song that is ignored. she needs to release all her songs that have never been released. like another remixed and revisited:) she never performs this :(
MADONNA WROTE THIS AND CATHERINE BUCHANAN IS NOT THE LEAD VOCALIST SHE SINGS IN THE CHORUS. JELLYBEAN DID NOT SAVE MADONNAS LIFE SHE WAS BEING PAID BY SIRE RECORDS FOR EACH SONG SHE WROTE, NOT BY JELLYBEAN. IT WAS DECIDED THAT THIS SONG WOULD NOT BE SUITED ON MADONNAS FIRST ALBUM SO JELLYBEAN TOOK IT AND RE-PRODUCED IT FOR HIS ALBUM. BEFORE MADONNAS DEAL WITH SIRE SHE WAS SIGNED TO GOTHAM MANAGEMENT AND WAS BEING SUPPORTED BY CAMILLE BARBONE. JELLYBEAN WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MADONNAS SUCCESS.
@MLVCR58 :-) Your Madonna Channel is magnificent. Just been looking at it for the first time. I have loved Madonna since I was 9 and now as an old man ;-) she means more to me than ever. Once again, great work and tribute to the Queen. Thanks for smiling my way.
@runkydonk EVery one is right jellybean didn't make Madonna she made herself sidewalk talk hmmmmmm to me came out later when madonna did her first album i went to college for a summer program in 1985 or 1986 thats when I heard sidewalk talk yes madonna and madonna album madonna. madonna what 1983-1984 then was like a virgin etc
You are sadly incorrect buddy. Catherine Buchanan DID SING this song. I have the original album this appears on which is Jellybean's "Just Visiting This Planet", and the liner notes say Catherine is the singer. Madonna only does back ground vocals (as stated in the liner notes also)
@runkydonk Yet in one interview Madonna had with the media, she owes her stardom to Jellybean which means Jellybean played a major role in Madonna's career.
Madonna was practically living hand to mouth when this came out. Jellybean put cash money in her pocket and gave her a name. If not for this song, there probably wouldn't have been any others. NY might very well have swallowed Madonna up like it did a million other people who came here looking for fame and fortune
having said that, this is the first and LAST song she sang on that I liked
@RunawayTrane Not really. Madonna was signed by Gotham Management before Jellybean came into her life. She was already making music and on her way to recording an album through Gotham, managed by Camile Barbone. A few songs of that period can be found on youtube. Jellybean entered the scene with Holiday and stuff from her first album. but as it is well known, Madonna was already making music years before that.
Well, remember too that Madonna at the time this song was recorded wasn't yet the star she became soon after, so...if I remember right, once Madonna did become a known star not long after, THEN Benitez released this song and tried to cash in on her new stardom. Afterall, he helped her get noticed by the New York club scene, connected record producers, etc. and he felt that she owes him. Madonna was known to step on a few toes on her rise to the top, and his was one of them.
@GrailcodeDotNet Actually, Madonna had already gotten a deal for a record through Camille Barbone and Gotham Management. The only reason she never made it was that the she was too impatient and wanted to take another route - dance music - and not rock (which was what she was doing with Gotham). That is before Jellybean and Mark Kamins. Madonna was already in the music scene before they got into her life. You can find a few Madonna songs from the Gotham Management period here on youtube.
This IS Madonna. I have the 12" single. Jellybean Benitez featuring Madonna is how it appears on the sleeve. Most of the lead vocals are sung by Catherine Buchanan, but Madonna does sing some solo verses. The B-Side is "The Mexican". This ("Sidewalk Talk") is still my favorite track from Madonna.
i'll give maddy her props...when she first came out...i thought she was just another white girl trying to get over with a black sound...i didn't care for her black men aren't romantic remark, after she broke up with dennis rodman...but she has lasted....i wouldn't say she's a great talent, but she has talent...
Actually, this hit did NOT get too much airplay here on the West Coast. However, the clubs DID play it and I can tell you - when this jam came on, the floor was packed.
Madonna wrote this song and yes she shares background vocals. You can clearly hear that Madonna early 80's voice! Love the song so much and it sure does bring back wonderful memories...
I actually had the cassette (forget how to spell it) from back in the day. I never thought I would ever hear this again. Thanks for sharing!! She will always be "MO" to me!
Let me try to re-post this. In the picture at 5:17, I'm pretty sure that the male back-up dancer is Madonna's brother Christopher. It makes sense because I read his book, Life With My Sister Madonna.
I love this song. I spent years looking for an mp3 of it and couldn't find it anywhere until about a year or two ago. It's nice to see it up on Youtube. =)
Is that Jethro (the English comedian) in one of the photos with Madona and John -Jellybean- Benitez. It's the photo of them in the studio I'm on about.
"Sidewalk Talk" is a single by American record producer John "Jellybean" Benitez, released in 1984 by EMI Records (see 1984 in music). The song was originally written by Madonna during the beginning of her career. She granted out this song to Jellybean in 1985
Si quieren que les diga algo, jamás me imaginé que esta fuera una canción de Madonna. Madonna 1st record ever produced by Jellybean Benitez!!! Proof of she stole her whole street style from HIM. If you freeze the vid at :16 and :18 you can see Jellybean with his HOOD Hip Hop look in front of the World Famous Funhouse Club @ 10th Ave & 18th street. 1984-1986 LOL!!!

Me too, I'm 40 now and I can't believe how the time has flown...I love it when the young ones say they've never heard this song or have not seen these pics...I remember a time when this was the only Madonna we knew. Thanks for posting this.
no she also sings some solo verses, "When you're living on the street, Life can be full of misery, Find a place to call your own. Make your heart into a home"
I'm 40 and I remember this song from like 1984-86in my teens. This was how I first remembered her. When she switched to the "papa don't preach" "open your heart""sound it was an adjustment but it made me think "whats next? " And it's been what's next ? Ever since.
John Jelly Bean wrote the song but Madonna Sung it however in the contract agreement it was'nt to be commercialised by Madonna, this is why this song was never on any of madonna's records at the time.
i love this i was 13 when it was out...this is back when i think madonna was at her best...i always thought this music reminded me of the music in the tavis smiley show...
I grew up in Chicago and walked everywhere and I can remeber walking to school or whereever and looking down at my feet and walking to the beat of this songand stepping on the cracks to the rhythem and dancing when I thought no one was looking. Man, that was fun.
YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! My all-time favorite classic from Jellybean & Madonna!!!! I'm a huge fan of Madonna and her music, and this classic street tune is one of them!!!! The DJs here in Chicago used to play this tune heavily all the time, and this became one of the most requested tunes on the radio :-) Favored and rated 20 stars all the way :-) You don't know how much you made my day by uploading this slammin' dance classic :-) YOU ROCK!!!!
ViewsFromAbroad, Madonna did NOT perform the "rap" on the this, the original recording. It's quite well known that "Sidewalk Talk" is Jellybean featuring Catherine Buchanan and Madonna.
Aw, bless Catharine Buchanan ... they didn't even spell her name right! :-) It's misspelled "Catherine" on the single and on Jellybean's album. If you're researching her, look for CathArine Buchanan.

Me too, I'm 40 now and I can't believe how the time has flown...I love it when the young ones say they've never heard this song or have not seen these pics...I remember a time when this was the only Madonna we knew. Thanks for posting this.

I have this on vinyl and I haven't heard it for a long time. Great 80's Madonna precursor of her gigantism!!!

Loved this song in high school. Wished they had made an actual for it. It would have blown up the charts. Great song!

This song takes me right back to grade 7. I love how happy and positive the songs of that era were. Fun tune.

@MLVCR58 This was Madonna "true" 1st record..too bad not many people heard of it. It's an amazing piece of Jellybean's work.

YES!!! YES!!!

I love to see Madonna´s early years images.
She was so natural with her street style.
She had a hard stare, an unmeasurable strength.

ViewsFromAbroad, Madonna did NOT perform the "rap" on the this, the original recording. It's quite well known that "Sidewalk Talk" is Jellybean featuring Catherine Buchanan and Madonna.

This is the original...
