I think the market is a must for visitors to Granada. So many sounds, smells, and sights. I don't know why you think is the "worst part" of Granada. I enjoyed my time in the market more than walking around the areas filled with European and American tourists.
For us, "Granadinos" our town is a lot more than "El Mercado", you got (Isletas, el Mombacho, the colonial architecture, our people, etc) but I agree with Kahunna, as a visitor is crucial to get to know what's bellow the surface and "El marcado' is a place where you can see and feel the energy of our people.
How safe is Grenada for people from the U.S. considering moving there? I hear the cost of living is very low.

Granada is so much better than the market, you just present the worst part of our beautiful city that is rich in culture, and history.
