In general, if you make it to LCDR (O-4) rank, you can stay in. Probably get a desk or staff job, but maybe XO & even CO of a large ship, maybe a carrier. Later, even admiral.

Wow, cool to see..I was stationed at Top Gun as a Plane Capt. and Aviation Structural Mechanic on the A-4 Skyhawks from 1989-1993. They mentioned that the average age of the pilots was 26 (although the Top Gun instructors were a little older than that), well the ground crew that serviced and maintained the aircraft were mostly 18-20 years old. I got out a couple years before they moved from NAS Miramar to NAS Fallon Nevada.

I was in charge of the PSI contractors who did all the art work, call sign cartoons, etc. Also the contract that put portable video cameras in the cockpits behind the instructors.

@tbdonnelly67 - No. I don't think it was ever done. The landing gear isn't robust enough for carrier work.

The tailhook is used on land, for arrested landings in case of brake failure, L/G problems, etc. It's also not strong enough for carrier use.

@tbdonnelly67 Because VFC-13 out in Fallon (was Miramar back then) flies the F-16 as aggressors along with F/A-18's and F-5E's. Allows the pilots to train against dissimilar aircraft with different abilities and characteristics than the ones they fly.

Now they have evolved and depend on US fighters like f4, f15, f16 but they modify them with superior avionics and other enhancements. Also Israel manufactures a lot of their own weapons but still rely heavily on US aircraft. Israel now has best fighter pilots in the world and it's not shown in the media but they train the American pilots.

no one knows, the IAF is very secretive in what they do because they don't want others to know their training tactics and how they operate. IAF pilots can't even show their faces on camera because they are too valuable to the country. To answer your questions, the equivalent is the entire Israeli Air Force and there are special groups within it like the Hammer squadron who carry out the most dangerous operations.

However when they come to Top Gun as aggressor pilots, they get qualified in the F-16N, F-5E and F/A-18. But way to make yourself look like an ass by trying to put down someone else.

The F-14 isn't the most sophisticated/deadly weapon in the US arsenal. One weapon much more deadly than the 14 is the LGM-30 Minuteman III nuclear missile. Can pretty much incinerate any large city. Go figure O'Reilly and research your stuff a little better.

This was for TV, so there was no one beating anyone.

In a proper TOPGUN class, the instructors won over students, 'til the students had had a few weeks of training. Later in the class, the instructors were still usually better, but students occasionally won.

So, the F-16s usually won, but then so did the A-4s when flown by instructors, and F-5s when we had 'em.

In later classes, students came in with their FA-18s, which were a better match for the F-16s.

F-14s were better for longer-range fighting; that's what they were designed for, with that Phoenix missile & radar system. For example, the Libyan MiGs probably never even knew F-14s were after them when they were splashed.

Each aircraft has its advantages and weaknesses. Part of the TOPGUN curriculum was to use your A/C's advantages and the enemy's weaknesses to win.

@KutWrite IIRC The Libyan MiGs were splashed with sidwinders and also the F-14s at topgun never flew with simulated AiM-54s, just 7s and 9s. AiM-54s were reserved only for the soviet bombers not fighters. Good video thanks.
