  • Hi. Can you tell me if a theology or philosophy degree is required to become a Quaker or is it just recommended?

Just joking, guys. But it does seem that modern Quakers spend so much time in their heads intellectualizing and debating their differences. It can get sooo complicated. I don't see this attracting too many people. The "average" person is looking for a practical way of living with less stress and more fulfillment. Diversity is not going away. Accept it and emphasize the heart.

  • Thanks for the comment and no Degree required, but I don't think "thinking" or "intellectualizing" is the problem. I think it's more dealing with the heart issues you speak of. These two don't have to be contrary to each other. This is the point I try to make during our conversation - acting out what it is what we want others to see as Quakerism, not just talking about it but actually inviting others to enter into a living story with eyes set on seeing the "fantasy" of the Kingdom lived out.

  • Thanks for starting this out, Martin and Wess--thanks for kicking off the American Quaker discussion and making us more accessible!

  • Yay! You fixed it! Good job guys, enjoyed it and look forward to more.

  • Hi all: the first upload of this had audio dropping out at the 6-minute mark so here it is again. Let me know of any problems. And sorry that all the previous comments were lost.
