  • Re: House arrest in Franklin's house. I doubt this; Andre was with Howe during the occupation of Philly in 1777-78 , and left with the army when the marched out- so how could he be under :house arres"t there?

He stayed in Franklin's house, Ben was in France at this time, and supposedly when the British left , he pilfered items, including Franklin's portrait, which was returned to the US in the 1920s and now hangs in the White house.

    Otherwise, thanks for this .

  • I live 2 miles down the road. Great restaurant! Nice video!

  • Great Video - I got married right where you're standing Robert!!! The 76 House is Awesome!

  • This is a great history and I am happy to see the home of one of my ancestors so well preserved and appreciated!

  • An excellent restaurant. Wonderful food, fabulous people, great entertainment. We go there anytime we visit the area. So beautiful too.

  • Whatever guys its a great historic restaurant with beauty restored inside and out and its owner Rob Norden deserves many kudos for what he has done to preserve it.

I would think Rob (the presenter) knows a bit about history as his father owned/ran another famous old spot - Fraunces Tavern in NYC .

A beautiful place with great food and if you want to impress or be impressed-GO THERE!

I am sure Rob would be happy to discuss the differences in historical thoughts with you.

He is the host of hosts

  • As awesome is this is . I hate to say it , but thers no way in fucking hell this is americas oldest restaurant . Do you know how many places were stteld before new york ? New orleans , L.A , carolina , Boston

  • Well we don't claim that Tappan is the first european settlement, though it is amongst the oldest. The 76 House is, however, the oldest restaurant and your comment does not speak to the existence of any older restaurant. By the way many historians date the settlement at Haverstraw, NY (just 10 miles from Tappan) to 1580 which would make it the oldest european settlement. Interesting, huh? A lot of the anglocentric history you read discards the Dutch and other settlers.

  • That doesnt make any sense .

Plymouth was the first settelment in the USA and that was in 1620 . And there are tons of settments before here . so why would this be the firts restaurant ? Some onion restaurant in boston is the oldest .

  • The Oldest restaurnt in Boston is the oyster house was was converted to a restaurant in the 1800's but the building dates back to the 1620's. Our restaurant was purpose built as the public house of Tappan which received its formal patent in 1686. I don't want to upset you but if your posts are in earnest you need to do a little background study.

  • You dont understand what im saying, even thought this might be americas oldest restaurant , its not still running . So its not really a restaurant anymore , do you get what im saying? The oldest restaurant you can acctually get food at in america is the oyster house

  • No, Swagerama "YOU" don't understand. The 76 House IS still running. You CAN eat food and drink alcohol there and even have your wedding there if you want. How is this not a running restaurant? You are obviously not as smart as you think you are.
