you know what it is about them, is they were warriors back then. just that old fashioned sense of dignity and heart you won't ever find again. 90's was in my opinion the good ol days of the NHL.
Don't get me wrong here Savard is one of the greats. But the thing I like best about this video is, how small the goalies look. Shooters could see so much more of the net behind the goalies. I wish things would go back to the way they were.
it's awesome how you can see elements of savard's game come out in the way patrick kane plays. maybe we'll see a spinorama out of him in the future :D
I guess it depends on what you call a great player...Sure, Ovi and Crosby carry the league, but the real skill and good hockey is Richards, Toews, Camalleri and guys like that. Any backhecker who is worth his salt will negate a Ovi or Crosby. And what you get for a final is a really good offensive/defensive team in Chicago and a really scrappy team in Philly. Not one night out of the year would I want to play either one.
@cooptae21 wtf r u trying to say idiot... hockey has never been a goon sport and if anything since the rule changes, hockey today is much less of a "goon sport" since the 70s and 80s... if u dont believe me, why dont u go and watch some highlights of all the benchclearing brawls that used to go on... dumbass.
"Wayne Gretzky is the greatest Hockey player and will always be the greatest."
That can only be true if you never saw Bobby Orr play. Orr CONTROLLED games like no other player, before or since.
Gordie Howe, Milt Schmidt, Montreal Gazette Hall of Fame writer Red Fisher and Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson have watched, played and/or coached in the NHL since the 1930's, and they ALL say Bobby Orr is the greatest hockey player ever. What do YOU know about hockey that they don't?
what i loved about hockey in the 80s and 90s is that there were so many great players the arguments couldnt end on who was great. you had gretzky, robitalle, messier, bourque, neely, savard, hull, hawerchuck, lafontaine, bossy, clarke, lemieux, coffey, chelios, macinnis, leetch, murphy, dionne, the list just goes on and on. now all you debate really is ovechkin, crosby, iginla, phaneuf, lidstrom, pronger. hockey players maybe in better shape today but they cant match the guys from the past.
@NYR21135 totally agree, but I think that has a lot to do with the fact that 3rd and 4th liners can actually skate and play now. Edmonton at home was almost impossible to beat cause they would get Gretz, Mess, and Kurri out against some crappy 4th line who could barely skate but knew how to fight. Nowadays, all 4 lines can skate and some even have skill. I love the 80's, Stevie Y, Savard and Gretzky are what got me watching hockey, but I think the game is better overall now.
@NYR21135 Prepare for more. The Avalanche team is full of rookies that most likely will be superstars, and there's plenty of other young talent arising. Just look at Pavelski.
@NYR21135 Not anymore bud, 'cause not only is there Ovie, Iginla, Lidstrom and Crosby, but now theres Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin,Perry, Stamkos, St. Louis, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Brad Richards, Toews, Kane, Kesler, Eric Staal, Malkin, Marleau, Thornton, Lecavalier, Getzlaf, Selanne and so many more.
Also, the goalies back then were so much easier to fool, compared to the goalies now, who've learned how to deal with the shots, dekes and plays people used to use back in the 90s and 80s.
Actually the fact that both Denis and Serge Savard wore the #18 was nothing more than a coincidence. The trainer in Chicago assigned the #18 to Denis at the begining of training camp in his rookie season
Trust me Serge Savard's spinorama was perfected well before Denis arrived. On legends of hockey Serge talks about watching Doug Harvey doing spinorama moves.
Real cool, Savard had a real nice mix of power and finesse.

the thing i love about the 80's and 90's is that so many players looked great because the goaltending was heinous and the back-checking was neglible.

Maybe not in better shape ( bigger and stronger yes) but your right on with the rest of your assessment. The game is too regimented now.

Agreed. The only one you left off was Stevie Y. (maybe Shanny too).

The Savardian spin-o-rama was actually named for the move that Serge Savard implemented, however it was Denis Savard who perfected it.

Hey do you know if Denis Savard worn the #18 jersey to be like Serge Savard? That would make sense anyways
